(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The white settler regime in South Africa, which was racist and sexist at the same time, oppressed and humiliated black men. In addition, the militarization of the society influenced the development of structural and gender-based violence in South Africa. After some innovative legal reforms and the introduction of gender policies by the ANC government in the 1990s some ANC politicians has become hostile against women's organisations and gender organisations. At the same time these organisations have to cope with the violent heritage of Apartheid." (author's abstract)

Autor/in:
Dannecker, Petra
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In this article it will be shown how women's organizations in Sudan, Malaysia and Senegal constitute new social spaces through the negotiations of global development concepts and visions locally. It will be shown that transnational networks, new forms of communication and interaction as well as the connection of different fields of knowledge are modes developed for the constitution of spaces for negotiating gender relations, Islam, development and social change locally. Transnational spaces do play, as the analysis of the empirical material reveals, an important role as a knowledge base and for developing new strategies." (author's abstract)

"Life in brackets": biographical uncertainties of HIV-positive women in South Africa
Titelübersetzung:Leben auf Zeit: biografische Unsicherheiten HIV-positiver Frauen in Südafrika
Autor/in:
Burchardt, Marian
Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 11 (2010) 1, 23 S
Inhalt: As South Africa is witnessing a maturing AIDS epidemic, the experience and impact of the disease are written ever more firmly into the biographical self-constructions of the infected. In this article, I explore typical strategies of dealing with uncertainties arising from new challenges, after the shock of ontological insecurity ensuing from the diagnosis, has been overcome. The analysis is based on contrasting interpretations of problem-centered biographical interviews with HIV-positive South African women. In the process, results have been formulated in terms of hypotheses regarding links between biographical situatedness and strategies of action. The hypotheses have been validated through case comparisons. The article highlights personal transformation, social support and the search for normality as key aspects for understanding these strategies and spells out how these are enabled, constrained and shaped within the social domains of religion, AIDS activism and township youth culture.

"Still working on it": an overview on the current state of public activism of women in the Philippines

Autor/in:
Reese, Niklas
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper gives an overview on to what extent public activism in the Philippines is still gendered and how far it, therefore, disadvantages women. The paper consists of three major topics: (1) observations on women and the public space, (2) an outline of women and formal politics, and (3) a glimpse into gender within civil society and social movements in the Philippines."
Titelübersetzung:Micro credits for women: instruments for accumulating symbolic capital?! Empowerment measures as a basis for a gender specific change using the example of the micro credit sector in Middle Egypt
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In this paper the authors will discuss the possibilities of triggering gender specific social changes in newly industrialized and developing countries by micro-loans based on a study conducted in Middle Egypt which dealt with women facing multiple discriminations. As shown by the presented empirical results, micro-loans as part of empowerment measures can support women accumulating economic and particularly cultural and social capital according to Bourdieu's conceptualization. By initiating those developments, symbolic capital represented by the participants' schemes of perceiving, thinking and acting is also changing. It might also cause structural changes on a macro level. Empirical data acquired by the authors in Middle Egypt form the basis for modeling social changes on different levels." (author's abstract)

Gender, Privatisierung der Wasserversorgung und Partizipation
Titelübersetzung:Gender, privatisation of water, and participation
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In industrial countries the provision of drinking water and sanitation used to form part of the welfare state, in developing countries they belonged to the hallmarks of a modern development state. In the early nineties the private sector increasingly took an interest in water. As particularly in developing countries the handling of water falls to women, access to clean water met their practical needs at the same time as models of participation appeared to meet their strategic interest in empowerment. An in-depth analysis gives a differentiated picture of the embeddedness of participation in local structures of male dominance in interaction with global profitoriented strategies. Since the second half of the nineties resistance against water privatisation, and a re-assessment on the part of transnational corporations, led to a certain change in strategy." (author's abstract)

The anti-terror war in Somalia: Somali women's multifaceted role in armed conflict
Autor/in:
Teshome, Wondwosen; Negash, Jerusalem
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'The aim of this article is to explore the U.S.-led anti-terror war in Somalia and evaluate its impact on the status and role of Somali women. With the al-Qaeda attacks on U.S. embassies in Nairobi (Kenya) and Dar es Salam (Tanzania) in August 1998, Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism became a major threat to the region. In response to this threat, the United States initiated an anti-terror war in East Africa, in particular in Somalia. In both the anti-terror war and the Somali civil war, Somali women's participation has been significant. So far, however, no serious research has been conducted into women's role in these conflicts or into the impacts of these conflicts on women in Somalia, a country already plagued by famine, political instability, ethnic war, and gender-based violence. Armed conflicts offer new opportunities and responsibilities in both domestic and public spheres that assist in redefining social relations between women and men. After conflicts, however, the changes in gender roles often do not persist and pre-war patriarchal gender roles re-appear in many societies. By investigating the case of Somalia, this paper examines the reasons behind the re-emergence of pre-war gender roles after conflicts.' (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Agents of change: women activists in Aceh
Autor/in:
Grossmann, Kristina
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Aceh, Indonesia's westernmost province is in a process of political, social and cultural transformation, which is caused by three main factors. First, the process of decentralization, launched by the government of Indonesia starting from the end of the 1990s and as a consequence of the implementation of sharia bylaws since 2001, second, the tsunami calamity 2004 and third, the peace process starting with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) 2005 between representatives of the Government of Indonesia and the Acehnese freedom movement GAM (Gerakan Aceh Merdeka). Today's situation of women in Aceh is influenced by repressions due to a conservative interpretation of Islam, by the impact of international aid organizations, which entered Aceh after the tsunami and by the political, social and cultural reconstruction of Aceh since the beginning of the peace process. The transformation process causes huge challenges for women and at the same time provides a wide range of opportunities for participation and modeling the new province Aceh. In this vibrant atmosphere, where tensions between Islamic religiosity, traditional-cultural structures and Western values are immense, women activists design positions and strategies to aim their desire of gender justice, equity and women's rights. The present impact of the multiple efforts of women activists to take influence in the political and socio-cultural area can be described as opening a window of opportunities. They could benefit from emancipative objectives of international organizations and from the national and international monetary funds. Women activists could develop capacity and raise their bargaining power through the networks with international organizations. Hurdles in the long-term success of implementing the aims of woman activists are the short time-frames of the aid-programs and the top-down approach of most programs. The power of the political elite in Aceh and of religious leaders is strong and the agendas of woman activists are constrained by socio-political and religious acceptance." (author's abstract)
"Blood tests with the eyes": negotiating conjugal relations during the HIV/AIDS crisis in rural Namibia
Autor/in:
Pauli, Julia; Schnegg, Michael
Quelle: Aridity, change and conflict in Africa : proceedings of an international ACACIA conference held at Königswinter, Germany, October 1-3, 2003. Köln (Colloquium Africanum), 2007, S 411-439
Inhalt: Research from different parts of Africa indicates that to grasp the HIV/AIDS catastrophe, an in-depth understanding of conjugal relationships is crucial. In casual, short-term sexual interactions, safer sex practices, foremost condom use, have become more and more prevalent. This does not hold true for long-term relationships. Marriage rates have substantially declined in many parts of southern Africa. Without marriage as a possible frame for conjugal relations meanings and practices of 'love' have become the structuring concept of conjugality. Love relations are perceived as based on trust. This contradicts the use of condoms, a visible sign of mistrust. Based on long-term ethnographic field research in rural northwest Namibia we analyse the interconnections between conjugal relations, perceptions of risk and practices of safe sex in detail.
Local-global processes: linking globalization, democratization, and the development of women's football in South Africa

Autor/in:
Fabrizio Pelak, Cynthia
Quelle: Afrika Spectrum, 41 (2006) 3, S 371-392
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'In our ever-increasing global world, it is becoming more difficult to understand local and national experiences of competitive athletes without reference to global processes. This is clearly the case when it comes to the global sport of football. This paper takes up the issue of local-global connections within football in Africa by examining the development of and the shifting power relations within South African women's football during the 1990s. The concurrent processes of democratization and globalization make South Africa a particularly intriguing context in which to examine local-global linkages. This analysis is based on multiple sources of data including qualitative interviews, self-administered surveys, archival documents, and direct observations of women's soccer in South Africa. Future directions for research to increase our understanding of contemporary African women's sporting experiences are discussed.' (author's abstract)|
