(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Taking into account the current debate about professionalization, this article provides an historical overview of the job profile of (female) educators (in Germany). Since the beginnings of institutional childcare, looking after young children has been considered a task for women. Although Froebel's philosophy to enhance professionalization in the field of early childhood education and care was adopted by the bourgeois women's movement, it already failed one hundred years ago at the school conference of the German Reich. Since then various opportunities have been missed to strengthen the field of early childhood education and care and to systematically make it an integral part of the education system - including the most recent efforts which aimed to redefine and reestimate qualification requirements and tasks of staff working in early childhood education and care." Why do girls' and boys' gender-(a)typical occupational aspirations differ across countries? How cultural norms and institutional constraints shape young adolescents' occupational preferences

Inhalt: Occupational sex segregation persists in all European and OECD countries; yet in some countries, it is more pronounced than in others. In this paper we seek to explain these cross-national variations by analyzing the realistic occupational aspirations of 15-year-old pupils in 29 EU and OECD countries. Based on socialization and rational choice approaches we develop hypotheses for how cultural norms and national institutions might influence the gender-typing of occupations. These are tested by applying 2-step multi-level models to the OECD's 2006 PISA study merged with country-level data from various sources. Results indicate that girls develop gender-(a)typical occupational aspirations in response to structural education and labor market differences across countries, while boys' gender-(a)typical aspirations are mainly influenced by country variations in normative prescriptions of gender-essentialist cultures and self-expressive value systems. The findings point at the necessity for differentiating both between micro- and macrolevel explanations and between explanations for women and men. (author's abstract)

Still a perfect model? The gender impact of vocational training in Germany

Inhalt: Reconstructing the parallel structure of ‘dual’ and ‘school-based’ vocational routes reveals the close connection between the German vocational training system and the segmentation of the labour market by gender. The example of jobs in childcare and pre-primary education shows that the legacy of semi-professionalism in these occupations is not just rooted in the nature of training and working conditions, but complexly interlinks with the prevalence of the male breadwinner model sustained by social policy regulations and the German taxation system. In France, by contrast, the central state takes responsibility for the provision of childcare from zero to six years of age to support female labour force participation and dual-earner couples. This has also fostered professionalisation in the respective occupations. Whilst this may not necessarily induce a degendering process at the level of horizontal segregation of vocational qualifications, it facilitates gender equality in terms of vertical mobility and the professional status of women.

Titelübersetzung:"...for me there's either the family path or the career path ..." - on the importance of normative requirements in young women's vocational orientation
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "To investigate the relationship between careers and gender, this article takes a genderfocused look at the normative requirements and career-relevant orientation which prove to be important as young women seek vocational orientation and plan their lives. Here ideas about 'pursuing a career' or being a 'career woman' can be understood as prestructured by normative discourses within which certain concepts of 'career' become dominant and have to be updated and adapted by the subjects. Normative requirements already frame the subjects' plans before they begin their working lives, and not only become relevant once they have embarked on a career and gained a certain amount of work experience. In light of this fact, the article shows how 'career' is understood and negotiated in group discussions with young women in the senior years of secondary school." (author's abstract)

Job-related circular mobility and the quality of intimate relationships

Inhalt: "This paper addresses the influence of different types of spatial mobility on relationship quality. Although some studies have been carried out on this question, the existing empirical results remain contradictory. The paper tries to overcome some of these limitations by analyzing to what extent mobility demands show direct as well as indirect effects. Spatial mobility could have impacts on crucial aspects of relationship dynamics, which are theoretically and empirically identified as significant for relationship satisfaction. The mediating variables used therefore include relatedness, autonomy, conflict and the perceived fairness with regard to the division of labor. The data support the stress hypothesis which assumes that job-related mobility has a negative effect on the relationship quality, but only for women and mothers. There are actually positive effects for men. In terms of indirect effects, the results show that spatial mobility does neither reduce relatedness in relationships nor increase conflict behavior significantly. In fact, the opposite effect seems to come to play: There is empirical evidence, especially for women, that more demanding mobility increases the feeling of autonomy within a relationship. It also increases relatedness and reduces perceived conflicts, this in turn having a positive effect on relationship quality." (author's abstract)
Work identity and contradictory experiences of welfare workers in a life-history perspective
Autor/in:
Dybbroe, Betina
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 38 (2013) 2, S 107-123
Inhalt: "Transformation of the welfare sectors challenge professional identities of care and welfare workers in Scandinavia. At the same time welfare and care workers take part in these changes and are changed in the psycho-social setting of the workplace. This article presents research about care work in Denmark with a focus on subjective processing of work identity, applying a psycho-societal theoretical and methodical approach. A life historical and experiential understanding of Alfred Lorenzer's cultural theory is applied to understand societal transformations, here in the work place and of professionals in relation to their present scene of work and in relation to their life history. Two concepts are applied, interaction form and scenic understanding, because of their potentials for analyzing workers' experience. The analysis is based on a combined ethnographic and life historical investigation in nursing and involves a young nurse in scenes of the hospital, where gendered life history is re-enacted and present in a gendered work life with fragile possibilities of identification. Social dynamics interact with subjective dynamics in ways that illuminate not only habitual and creative orientations and practices of professionals in care, but also the contradictory transformations of the work, e.g. marketization and democratization in the work place." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The aim of the dynamic process of professionalizing early childhood education is to improve the quality of pedagogical work, as well as to enhance the status of the professional field as a whole. Nowadays, the possible qualification levels range from vocational school to a university Master’s degree. As a result, the question arises of what impact this has on the gender-related profiles of professional fields in early childhood education and whether the different qualification levels lead to a gender-related hierarchy. This study provides an overview on the presence of women and men in the various segments of early childhood education. As it turns out, women still dominate quantitatively on all levels of qualification and hierarchy. However, the share of women varies considerably from 56 to 97 per cent. It is particularly surprising that in the academic training route in early childhood education the hitherto low share of men in vocational training is again halved to non-academic training."
