Inhalt: In times of demographic change, with the associated challenges for social security systems and the looming lack of skilled workers, extending working life becomes increasingly significant. According to the continuity theory (Atchley 1989) we can assume that individuals who are satisfied with their structures and performance will stay at work longer. We will therefore examine whether motivation and perceived work ability have an influence on the desire for continued employment. In addition, we will answer the question of whether factors that have a positive influence on motivation and work ability also have a direct influence on continued employment. Besides objective factors such as enterprise size and occupational status, we will examine subjective factors, such as assessment of recognition, the demands, and the meaningfulness of the work for their contributions to the explanation. The following analysis is based on a survey taken in May 2008 together with the Bundesinstitut für Bevölkerungsforschung (BiB). It enables us to identify the desire for continued employment in old age, the existing work motivation, and the state of health. The core results of the statistical analysis show that in men high motivation is linked to the desire for continued employment in retirement age. This does not apply to women; for them, work ability is the decisive criterion. In general, we observe that a positive assessment of the subjective influencing factors strengthen work motivation. In addition, with regard to objective factors it was ascertained that for men the working hour regime (full-time work) and occupation status (salaried “white-collar” employees) correlate positively with the desire for continued employment. In particular, meaningful work increases motivation among men and work ability increases motivation among women. It appears important that enterprises convince their employees of the meaningfulness of the work.

Quelle: SWS-Rundschau, 50 (2010) 2, S 207-227
Inhalt: "Since the accession of Austria to the European Union in 1995, rural development policies have become increasingly important, both in political and in financial aspects. In the current program period (2007-2013), 8 billion Euro will be spent on rural policy measures in Austria. This article analyzes, to which extent rural development policy and its instruments have the potential of transforming the gender-relations in favor of more equality. Considering the strategy of 'gender mainstreaming', interested in implementing gender equality in all political concepts and measures of the European Union, it will be discussed, how comprehensively this strategy has been realized in the rural development policies of Austria and which impacts it had and possibly will have for the progressive promotion of gender-relations in the rural areas."
[Autorenreferat]
Inhalt: "How should universities promote gender equality so that both genders have equal rights at every
level in the future? The majority of the members of the German Research Foundation (DFG) have agreed to a standard of equality which aims at – for example – increasing the number of female professors. Even though this happens at a favourable moment, there is no reason for too much excitement – if old principles are overcome, resistance is to be expected." [author's abstract]

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Despite increasing educational opportunities, highly qualified women remain disadvantaged vis-àvis their male colleagues, especially in top positions. In addition to institutional factors, events and decisions within the private sphere, i.e. within the couple, play a role in holding back women’s careers. While women report having the same equal opportunities as their partners with regard to their professional development, this does not apply to the private sphere – as in the past, women take the main responsibility for children. As long as gender inequality in the private sphere persists, it is unlikely that gender equality in the professional sphere will be achieved." (author's abstract)
A study of teachers' views towards practical work in secondary schools in England and Wales

Quelle: International Journal of Science Education, 32 (2010) 6, S 753-768
Inhalt: Many teachers view practical work as an essential feature of science education. This study examined whether there had been any changes in the relative importance of the aims science teachers assign to the use of practical work, across the full secondary age range (11-18), since the last such national survey undertaken by Kerr (1963). A stratified sample of representative schools was used in which 912 teachers were sent a questionnaire on their views towards the use of practical work in science with a total of 393 responses (42.5 percent) being received. The coefficient of concordance (Kendall, 1955) of the various rankings and their significance were calculated, as too were the z-scores. The findings suggest that whilst there have been substantial changes in teachers' views towards the use of practical work at Key Stages 4 and 5 (age 15-18) there have been no substantial changes at Key Stage 3 (age 11-14). Furthermore, the results are remarkably similar across subject specialism, teacher gender, and years of teaching experience although this paper will only focus on subject specialism. It appears that changes to the assessment criteria, notably the introduction of Science Investigation (Sc1) at Key Stage 4, and a growing desire amongst educational policy makers to improve the image of science, have had an effect on how those in the teaching profession perceive the value and aims of practical work particularly at Key Stages 4 and 5.
Auf der Suche nach Balance: Frauen und Männer zwischen Beruf, Familie und Engagement
Autor/in:
Alscher, Mareike
Quelle: WZB-Mitteilungen, (2010) 129, S 31-33
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "It is an important sociopolitical task to bring various spheres of life into balance. It is a much bigger challenge for women than for men to juggle working life, family and voluntary engagement. There are certain stages in life when it is easier for women to get involved in voluntary activities – many are parenting when they become involved in kindergartens and schools, for example. Obviously, mothers with part-time jobs are more involved than mothers who work full-time. Men, meanwhile, have more time on their hands for voluntary work. Even if they are working full-time and have families, they are able to commit more time for voluntary activities than women." (author's abstract)
The evolution of labor relations inside a Russian firm during late tansition: evidence from personnel data
Titelübersetzung:Die Entwicklung innerbetrieblicher Arbeitsverhältnisse einer russischen Firma in Zeiten der Transformation: Evidenz von Personaldaten
Autor/in:
Lehmann, Hartmut
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 35 (2010) 2, S 334-361
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper surveys three studies on the internal labor market of one Russian firm spanning the years 1997 to 2002 and focusing on three different issues. The studies use unique personnel data that were collected by us and that include the work history of each employee as well as annual averages of monthly wages and total compensation. Since the three studies are part of a larger project on internal labor markets in Russia and Ukraine during transition, the paper starts off with a general assessment of how the analysis of personnel data from transition countries can contribute to the general literature on internal labor markets. After short descriptions of the investigated firm and the personnel data at our disposal, the motivation and the pertinent results of the three studies are presented. While the first study looks at the question how the costs of a financial crisis are spread over the workforce and whether incumbent employees are sheltered from negative shocks in the economy, the second study is tied to the discussion of wage determination in Russia and analyzes the narrower question whether local labor market conditions are an important factor in the wage determination process of the firm at hand or whether stable internal labor market structures are of primary concern for its human resource managers. The third study contributes to the literature on the labor market experience of women in transition by analyzing the evolution and the determinants of the gender earnings gap in the firm." Quelle: International Journal of Science Education, 32 (2010) 12, S 1561-1593
Inhalt: Submicrorepresentations are a powerful tool for identifying misconceptions of chemical concepts and for generating proper mental models of chemical phenomena in students’ long term memory during chemical education. The main purpose of the study was to determine which independent variables (gender, formal reasoning abilities, visualization abilities and intrinsic motivation for learning chemistry) have the most influence on students’ reading and drawing submicrorepresentations. 386 secondary school students (aged 16.3 years) participated in the study. The instruments used in the study were: test of Chemical Knowledge, Test of Logical Thinking, two tests of visualization abilities Patterns and Rotations, and Questionnaire on Intrinsic Motivation for Learning Science. The results show moderate, but statistically significant correlations between students’ intrinsic motivation, formal reasoning abilities and chemical knowledge at submicroscopic level based on reading and drawing submicrorepresentations. Visualization abilities are not statistically significantly correlated with students’ success on items that comprise reading or drawing submicrorepresentations. It can be also concluded that there is a statistically significant difference between male and female students in solving problems that include reading or drawing submicrorepresentations. Based on these statistical results and content analysis of the sample problems, several educational strategies can be implemented for students to develop adequate mental models of chemical concepts on all three levels of representations.

Do female researchers face a glass ceiling in France? A hazard model of promotions

Inhalt: The present article examines whether French female researchers face a glass ceiling, an invisible barrier to promotion. Using an original database from the National Institute for Agricultural Research, we estimate duration models for promotions. The methodology used allowed us to take into account censored observations and unobserved heterogeneity. Our results show a significant gender effect that does not contradict the glass-ceiling hypothesis. In addition, factors that boost promotion seem to be radically different according to gender and we present evidence that promotion strategies are different for males and females.
