Inhalt: Masculine crisis has always been with men and presented in masculine studies, but it becomes popular in the post modern era after crucial events such as feminism, the world wars, economical problems, etc. The issue of masculinity and masculine crisis exists in works of Ian McEwan and this study applies masculine crisis on his Enduring Love (1994). Most of McEwan’s characters are men who seek to find their places in post modern era. Thus this paper focuses on masculine crisis which emerges in Joe Rose, the male protagonist of this novel, when the shattering moments in the beginning of the novel threaten his power and authority which is very important in masculinity of men. There is another factor (homophobia) in the novel that leads him toward masculine crisis as well. All through the novel the male character tries to regain his lost authority and power. At the end of the novel, he somehow overcomes masculine crisis. This paper uses Butler's theory of gender and other critics of masculine studies.

Remnant "Family": the role of women in the media discourse on families

Inhalt: How does gender affect discourse processes, particularly regarding the coverage of family issues? In order to explore this question, we focus on media representations of women in their roles as mothers on the one hand and journalists on the other and we compare the reporting of male and female journalists covering families. We refer to gender theory to examine processes of gender construction by different actors in the media and we draw on journalism theory to explain different reporting styles and strategies by male and female authors regarding discourse strategies, framing, and gender-stereotyping. Our methodological approaches include quantitative and qualitative content analyses and 14 semi-structured interviews with journalists, family researchers, and lobbyists. The sample includes coverage of families in general and that of large families in particular in German print media in the years 2011 and 2012, for a total of 1,100 texts. One of the key findings, not surprisingly, is that most of the journalists reporting on families are female. Similar to male journalists, however, they focus on the traditional family type despite the fact that various alternative forms of family life are now a social reality.
Titelübersetzung:Arbeit und Männlichkeit im Kleinbergbau Katangas
Autor/in:
Cuvelier, Jeroen
Quelle: Africa Spectrum, 49 (2014) 2, S 3-26
Inhalt: "This article, based on 16 months of anthropological fieldwork between 2005 and 2012, examines the relationship between work and masculinity among artisanal miners, or creuseurs, in Katanga, the southeastern province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It argues that men's involvement in artisanal mining should be considered not only as an economic survival strategy but also as an attempt to experiment with new ways of being a man in a context of economic crisis and changing gender relations. Furthermore, the article criticizes the tendency to downplay or underestimate the complexity and diversity of processes of masculine identity construction in Africa's artisanal-mining areas. In order to do justice to the intricacy of these processes, the article proposes using concepts and insights from the field of masculinity studies and distinguishing between a levelling and a differentiating trend in artisanal miners' masculinity practices." The association between norms and actions: the case of men's participation in housework
Titelübersetzung:Die Korrespondenz von normativen Vorstellungen und Handeln: das Beispiel männlicher Hausarbeit

Quelle: Comparative Population Studies - Zeitschrift für Bevölkerungswissenschaft, 39 (2014) 3, S 521-558
Inhalt: "Gender and family researchers are often puzzled by the differences between gender norms and actual behaviour. For example, many previous studies have shown that since the 1970s, attitudes have changed toward more modern gender role beliefs. However, this is generally not reflected in behaviour, this being especially true for men's involvement in housework and care work. In this paper, we analyse to what extent gender norms correspond with men's participation in housework. We examine in particular cooking, vacuum-cleaning and doing the laundry, because these activities reflect pronounced variation in norms and actions with regard to modern and traditional gender role attitudes. Going beyond previous research, which assesses the general influence of norms on practices, we investigate the relative impact of different types of gender ideologies, namely the strength with which respondents endorse (1) the male provider and female homemaker model, (2) women's employment, (3) employment as men's primary role, and (4) men's participation in unpaid work. Our empirical findings indicate that positive attitudes towards male contributions to housework are a key predictor of men's housework." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Gleichstellungsorientierte Männerpolitik(en) - Konzept und Spannungsfelder : Eine Positionierung
Titelübersetzung:Gender-sensitive men's politics - Concepts and challenges : a posit
Autor/in:
Theunert, Markus
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Over the last 10 years, concepts arising out of men's work and the men's movement have developed that, while having only a tenuous relationship to gender studies and gender equality work, have found some institutional recognition. Boys, men and fathers are the constituent parts that contribute to gender equality, and they have to some extent become the force behind independent strategies that dictate the direction men's politics is taking. It follows that the politics of gender equality focuses on those men that envision themselves as participants in political change processes and that perceive the push for equality as an opportunity to develop and manifest in productive impulses, as well as, provocations. This article represents a formative first step in the development of gendersensitive men's politics and also connects to the broader gender mainstreaming concept of 'involving men'. Proceeding from that point, generalized questions and contentious issues, as they relate to the gender equality perspectives found in men's politics, will be addressed." (author's abstract)
