Inhalt: This study defines contrapower harassment in academia as student incivility, bullying, and sexual attention aimed at faculty. A U.S., Alaskan sample of 399 professors (50% women, 88% white) at the state’s largest public university was surveyed about their experience with contrapower harassment. Although men reported more sexual attention from students and comparable levels of student incivility–bullying, women reported that such behaviors were more upsetting and had a greater negative impact on their health and work-lives; they were also more likely to take action following such experiences than men. Tenure-track faculty appear to be at increased risk of student hostility. Discussion focuses on how gender and other markers of socio-cultural or institutional power relate to the experience of contrapower harassment.
Titelübersetzung:Women's rights and gender at the United Nations : toward a new gender equality architecture
Autor/in:
Bunch, Charlotte
Titelübersetzung:Women's rights are human rights : transnational women's movement policy between a success story and setbacks
Autor/in:
Dackweiler, Regina-Maria
Titelübersetzung:From nation-building to market-building ; the transformation of forms of societalization within the European integration process
Autor/in:
Wobbe, Theresa
Inhalt: "Our understanding of nationalization and Europeanization is likely to profit more from a multi-leveled perspective than from approaches that view these processes as discrete, separate phases. This contribution therefore draws on the work of Georg Simmel by employing a gradualistic concept of society to examine the distinct forms of societalization that have emerged in the European integration process. In contrast to the nation-building model of political inclusion, it is argued here that market-building by the European Union results in a model of inclusion that works primarily within an economic framework. In a complementary development, equality is recodified as equal opportunity. As a consequence, this transformation contributes both to self-stabilizing the supra-national system and to eroding national inclusion arrangements." (author's abstract)
Der Bolognaprozess und die europäische Wissensgesellschaft

Serrano-Verlarde, Kathia
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article addresses the question how the 'knowledge society' became a political stake in the European reform discourse. By introducing the example of the Bologna process, the authoress will explicit the political reinterpretation of the term 'knowledge society', retrace its operationalization into political action guidelines and critically discuss its actual implementations. What type of knowledge society is described in the policy documentation of the Bologna process and what are the limits to its realization?" (author's abstract)

From formal adoption to enforcement : post-accession shifts in EU impact on Hungary in the equality policy field
Titelübersetzung:Von formaler Annahme zur Durchsetzung : Auswirkungen des EU-Beitritts auf die Gleichstellungspolitik Ungarns
Autor/in:
Krizsan, Andrea
Quelle: European Integration online Papers, Special Issue, Vol. 13 (2009) Iss. 2, 18 S.
Inhalt: "Research on EU conditionality in equality policy in Hungary shows that while the formal EU acquis has been transposed in a fast and successful way, its enforcement and application largely lag behind. Most researchers explain this weak enforcement with factors such as state capacity problems, the absence of inclusive policy making, and low norm resonance at the domestic level. This paper analyzes how changes in EU influence in the post-accession, post-conditionality period contribute to maintaining compliance with and improving the enforcement of EU equality policy in Hungary. It aims to understand implementation processes that take place in the post-accession period through the Hungarian case of equality policy. The paper argues that in order to capture the impact of the EU in the post-accession period, one must look beyond formal transposition-related mechanisms and increasingly at financial assistance and social learning mechanisms. While mechanisms connected to formal transposition might suggest major drawbacks in formal compliance, financial assistance and social learning mechanisms seem to address more directly the application and enforcement problems that Hungary faces in the equality realm. The paper shows that these mechanisms directly and indirectly impact the most crucial factors that determine enforcement - state capacity, the strength and involvement of civil society, and norm resonance. A slow but steady move toward sustainable improvement in enforcement is indicated." (author's abstract)
The construction of EU's childcare policy through the open method of coordination
Autor/in:
Radulova, Elissaveta
Quelle: European Integration online Papers, Special Issue, Vol. 13 (2009) Iss. 1, 20 S.
Inhalt: "This article elaborates analysis of the normative foundations of the European Union's policy for reconciliation of work and family life, with a specific focus on the shifts produced by the introduction of the Open Method of Coordination in the field of childcare policy. The main objective is to examine how childcare has been conceptualized for the purposes of EU public-policy making throughout the years of European integration (1951-2008) and whether the endorsement of the European Employment Strategy (EES) in 1997 has made an impact on this process. Adopting a constructivist analytical framework and policy frame analysis as main research method, the paper maps out the contemporary policy problematizations related to childcare provision, and traces their presence and dynamic development at the EU level. Based on a keyword search in the database of European Union law Eur-Lex, a dataset of 83 documents (42 pieces of secondary legislation and 41 Presidency Conclusions) is formed. The latter is subsequently examined through qualitative content analysis. The study reveals the normative and cognitive evolution of the policy-making process prior to and after the introduction of EES." (author's abstract)
Post-accession compliance with EU gender equality legislation in post-communist new member states
Autor/in:
Sedelmeier, Ulrich
Quelle: European Integration online Papers, Special Issue, Vol. 13 (2009) Iss. 2, 20 S.
Inhalt: "This paper analyses the transposition of EU legislation on gender equality at the workplace in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania and Slovenia, as well as the enforcement powers of their national equality institutions. It does not find significant differences between post- and pre-accession compliance. Overall compliance can be considered good in Hungary, Lithuania, and Slovenia, while it is considerably worse in the Czech Republic - both pre- and post-accession. As an explanation for these variations in legal transposition and enforcement bodies, the paper finds two equifinal paths towards correct transposition of EU gender equality legislation and strong enforcement bodies: either the absence of high adjustment costs, or the combination of strong social democratic governments and NGOs with special expertise in EU gender equality legislation." Bulgarian women medical doctors in the social modernization of the Bulgarian nation state (1878-1944)

Nazarska, Georgeta
Quelle: Historical Social Research : the official journal of Quantum and Interquant ; an international journal for the application of formal methods to history, Vol. 33 (2008) No. 2, S. 232-246
Inhalt: "This paper presents empirical (both statistical and prosopographical) data about the professional cluster of women medical doctors in Bulgaria from the establishment of Bulgarian Nation State till the Second World War. Medical doctors in Bulgaria were a main part of national intellectual elites, formed as a professional group of the Bulgarian intelligentsia during the 1830s-1870s. The first Bulgarian woman graduated from a university in the very beginning of national independence (1878) and she was a medical doctor, Anastassia Golovina. 1) This paper deals with the education and training of Bulgarian women medical doctors. Data regarding their number, educational centers and migrations would be summoned in order to explain if the relevant social transformation was influenced by foreign experience. The paper summarizes facts concerning the professional career of Bulgarian women medical doctors: employment opportunities, career interruptions, discriminatory appointment and promotion practices, cultural stereotyping. Also their professional activity in promoting hygiene and vaccination, in school medical care and as pioneers in the fields of neurology and gynecology will be commented. Some biographical examples should be presented there. The paper dwells upon the social, political and cultural activities of women medical doctors. They were members and leaders of feminist, charity and Social-Democratic organizations, as well as gifted translators and publicists. The paper makes an attempt to compare the 'Bulgarian case' of women doctors with the experience of women doctors in the same period in the Southeastern and the Western Europe." (author's abstract)
