Inhalt: "This paper presents empirical (both statistical and prosopographical) data about the professional cluster of women medical doctors in Bulgaria from the establishment of Bulgarian Nation State till the Second World War. Medical doctors in Bulgaria were a main part of national intellectual elites, formed as a professional group of the Bulgarian intelligentsia during the 1830s-1870s. The first Bulgarian woman graduated from a university in the very beginning of national independence (1878) and she was a medical doctor, Anastassia Golovina. 1) This paper deals with the education and training of Bulgarian women medical doctors. Data regarding their number, educational centers and migrations would be summoned in order to explain if the relevant social transformation was influenced by foreign experience. The paper summarizes facts concerning the professional career of Bulgarian women medical doctors: employment opportunities, career interruptions, discriminatory appointment and promotion practices, cultural stereotyping. Also their professional activity in promoting hygiene and vaccination, in school medical care and as pioneers in the fields of neurology and gynecology will be commented. Some biographical examples should be presented there. The paper dwells upon the social, political and cultural activities of women medical doctors. They were members and leaders of feminist, charity and Social-Democratic organizations, as well as gifted translators and publicists. The paper makes an attempt to compare the 'Bulgarian case' of women doctors with the experience of women doctors in the same period in the Southeastern and the Western Europe." (author's abstract)
Titelübersetzung:Internationalisation and globalisation of German higher education in the context of the Bologna Process
Autor/in:
Kehm, Barbara M.
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The contribution starts with a terminological differentiation of internationalisation, globalisation and Europeanisation in the field of higher education. Globalisation is distinguished from internationalisation in particular by its stronger focus on competitive dimensions. This is exemplified in the second part by analysing the functions of (global) rankings of higher education institutions. In the third part the Bologna reform process which continues to be based dominantly on the traditional cooperation paradigm is analysed using two perspectives. The first perspective is a look back on the process of implementation up to the 2005 stocktaking exercises. It is pointed out that up to that time a certain degree of convergence could be observed in the surface and macro structures, however, that there continued to be a high degree of diversity beneath these structures. The second perspective summarizes the results of a recently finished research project in the framework of which a number of higher education researchers reflected about the future and sustainability of the European Higher Education Area. In this context the issue of keeping up diversity was particularly emphasised as well as the issue of jointly going the 'European way'. The final part of the contribution proposes a research agenda in the field of internationalisation in higher education." (author's abstract)
Lernen von anderen Ländern? : internationale Perspektiven zur Teilnahme an Hochschulweiterbildung

Schaper, Hildegard
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article adopts an international comparative perspective to identify the conditions favouring or impeding participation in university continuing education and seeks to answer the question of what we can learn from other countries. To this end, data selected from seven countries through secondary statistical analyses is presented and systematically compared to the specific national institutional context. Our analysis shows that the current situation and future development of university continuing education is highly dependent on pathways and context and that this systemic nature applies constraints on the adoption of individual elements from other countries. Nevertheless, one can learn from the comparative countries." (author's abstract)

Der Jargon der Nützlichkeit : zur Employability-Diskussion im Bologna-Prozess
Titelübersetzung:The jargon of usefulness : the employability discussion in the Bologna process
Autor/in:
Teichler, Ulrich
Heft. So wird der Forumscharakter des HSW unterstrichen." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The Bologna process with its reform of study structures permits only a very limited continuity of former beliefs, routines, and spheres of influence (regardless of whether or not they are justified) within the framework of 3-year study courses. An appropriate approach to the reform concept calls for a reconsideration of the fundamental ideas underlying a scientific study course - that largely no longer correspond to the reality of studying - and to realize these ideas in a new bachelor's course concept. This is possible within professional curriculum development - not while retaining the jumble of subject contents that has accumulated over decades, but through a rigorous competence orientation. However, instead of this, we hear only affirmations of the decline and fall of the study of science in bachelor's course (which is even true, but not because of the Bologna concept, but as a result of ungrounded implementation decisions by committees in which every demand by the representatives of the disciplines involved has been squeezed back into the courses). In his article Ulrich Teichler sums up the breadth and the currently predictable effects of these reforms and focuses attention on the occupational orientation of studies. By pointing out that the traditional career relevance of training for religious ministers, lawyers, teachers, and physicians evidently did not destroy the 'old' idea of the university, he introduces a sobering note that brings the discussion back to earth." Effects of single parenthood on educational aspiration and student disengagement in Korea
Titelübersetzung:Alleinerziehende Eltern und Bildungsstreben der Kinder in Korea
Autor/in:
Park, Hyunjoon
Quelle: Demographic Research, Vol. 18 (2008) Art. 13, S. 377-408
Inhalt: "The recent rapid increase in divorce, along with its distinctive cultural and welfare environments for single-parent families, makes Korea an interesting case for examining effects of single parenthood on children's education. Using data from Korean 9th and 12th graders, the author compares the levels of educational aspiration and student disengagement between students with two parents and those with a single parent, distinguishing divorced single fathers, widowed single fathers, divorced single mothers, and widowed single mothers. Logistic regression analyses show that students with a divorced single parent, regardless of gender of the parent, are much less likely to aspire to four-year university education and more likely to be disengaged than their counterparts with two parents. The effects of widowhood disappear once control variables are held constant. Lower household income among single-parent families explains in part the poorer educational outcomes of their children. Parent-child interaction is another important mediating factor for the effect of single fatherhood but not for single motherhood. The relevance of the extended family system and distinctive features of post-divorce living arrangements in Korea is discussed to understand the effects of single parenthood." (author's abstract)

Elitenstruktur und soziale Ungleichheit in Europa
Titelübersetzung:Elite structure and social inequality in Europe
Autor/in:
Hartmann, Michael
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The social differences in the countries of the European Union have grown noticeably in the past twenty years; but vary in degree from country to country. The social division is much greater in, for example, Great Britain or Spain, than in the Scandinavian countries. These differences are directly related to the social recruitment of the national elite. This article shows that the division between poor and rich gets wider where the elite are clearly more exclusive and homogenous. The distribution of wealth in a society is significantly determined by the elite - who can only be hindered in the achievement of their own interests by the opposing forces in the population."
