Look Back – Summer School in Survey Methodology 2023

For the twelfth time in a row, Europe’s leading summer school in survey methodology took place from 02-25 August 2023 in Cologne and online. Over 200 participants from the international academic community took part in a series of excellent virtual and onsite courses on methods and techniques of survey methodology.

Four short courses and ten one-week courses were on the agenda. Eight courses were held onsite in Cologne, and the other six were delivered online via Zoom. The program combined introductory and advanced courses, aiming to suit the preferences and needs of a broader academic audience. Keeping pace with the new trends in survey methodology, four courses were new or redesigned completely: “Causal Inference with Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs)”, “Causal Inference Using Survey Data”, “Advanced Survey Design”, and “Advanced Questionnaire Design”. Participants were satisfied with their course overall, with an average of 4.3 on a scale from 1 (very dissatisfied) to 5 (very satisfied). 93% of the participants said they would recommend the GESIS Summer School to others. A participant who attended “Designing, Implementing, and Analyzing Longitudinal Surveys expressed admiration for the “great lecturers, very helpful and practical content, insightful discussions, very nice participants. GESIS staff is very nice and helpful. Lecturers were ready to discuss one’s own research and provided helpful comments and recommendations.” A participant of “Advanced Survey Design” praised the “up to date” coverage of “many interesting topics” by “nice professors” and enjoyed a “good mix of lectures, questions, and exercises”.

As in past years, the Summer School attracted an international scientific audience. 41% of the participants came from abroad, making the international character evident again in 2023.

Thanks to our cooperation with the Graduate School of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Mannheim, participants were again able to acquire a certificate acknowledging a workload worth 4 ECTS credits.

If you could not make it this summer, please save the date for the next edition: 24 July - 16 August 2024; onsite at GESIS Cologne and online via Zoom.

The program will be announced in February 2024 and in our newsletter in the first quarter of 2024.
