The Birkbeck Institute for Social Research Annual Lecture: 'Care, Caring and Carers - gender, race and class in Covid times' by Professor Shirin Rai  (Warwick Interdisciplinary Research Centre for International Development WICID)

14 June 2022, 18:00 — 20:30

"This is an analysis of the available evidence of the discriminatory effects of COVID-19 on Black Asian and Minority Ethnic families and communities, through examining the experience of the care needs of and the needs of carers in BAME communities, to understand how the wellbeing of three uniquely vulnerable groups – a) older BAME people, b) unpaid BAME carers of older people and c) paid social care workers– have been impacted by the current pandemic. I argue that the everyday stresses and strains and forms of physical and mental depletion experienced by these groups and communities of which they are part have not been mitigated by the austerity driven weathering, institutionally racist policies and the particular conditions imposed by lockdowns during the pandemic, which has exacerbated the harms experienced by these groups."
