Inhalt: "Recent experimental results indicate that women do not like competitive environments as much as men do. Another literature is interested in the effect of social identity on economic behaviors. This paper investigates in the lab the impact of social identity on men and women's willingness to compete both individually and as part of a team. To this aim, participants from the Identity sessions had to go through group identity building activities in the lab while participants from the Benchmark sessions did not. The main result is that men are only willing to enter a team competition with a teammate of unknown ability if they share a common group identity with him or her. This change of behavior seems to be caused by high-performing men who are less reluctant to be matched with a possibly less able participant when he or she belongs to his group. On the other hand, group identity does not seem to induce women to take actions more in the interest of the group they belong to." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "In this paper I wish to examine how changes have occurred in the processes of gendered identity construction amongst Mexican youths through examining local experiences of global, and specifically Mexican, modernities. Based on f eldwork carried out amongst youths in the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, my analysis addresses how youths plan for the future in the context of economic and political marginalisation, and how this affects the way in which they pursue different forms of romantic relationships. I also address changes that have occurred in youths’ understandings, perceptions and performances of their gendered identities in the context of a highly developed local tourist industry, the advent of mass media, and new online social worlds. My study shows how gendered identity construction amongst youths here becomes context-dependent, and how it encompasses individual agency whilst at the same time being negotiated through wider structural and social limitations. I also wish to demonstrate how changing gendered identities amongst youths are constantly constructed and renegotiated by individuals seeking to accommodate notions of modernity with perceptions of the traditional, and how these individuals balance contesting notions of gendered identities within themselves. This is, therefore, a study of local and gendered identity change amongst youths in the context of localised modernities and rapid social change." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: The Internet can be integrated into domestic life in various ways. This interesting study analyzes, primarily on the basis of problem-centered interviews and a qualitative content analysis (MAYRING), the (active) mode of picking up this medium and its integration into daily life. In the center of this study are the effects of Internet use and forms of communication, divided into temporal, spatial, contextual and social dimensions. In particular, this study focuses on the effects of Internet usage in the field of partner relationships with respect to gender relations. The question is raised as to the extent to which structures of inequality in the field of "going online" are reproduced. On the basis of the analysis of 12 couples, the integration processes in two countries (Germany and Australia, which differ somewhat in terms of diffusion level) are compared. The author argues that qualitatively oriented observation alone can bring the processes of communication and interaction in domestic (everyday) life into view—as shown by this study, even if "only" a more exploratory alignment is evident.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "While the extreme violence prevailing in Mexico has overshadowed the intensity of gender violence, feminicidio continues. This essay reviews the infamous murders of women occurring in Ciudad Juärez and Chihuahua since 1993, as an exemplary case of misogynistic violence and human rights violations. It argues that the process of not solving feminicide at the border allowed for the normalization of extreme violence and impunity, a precedent to the current tolerance of violence in Mexico, under the 'war on drugs'. In such a context, the historical ruling of the Inter-American Human Rights Court against the Mexican State in the case of feminicide is ill-fated." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article discusses perspectives of violence research in the field of violence against elderly people. In the beginning of the 1980s, when violence against the elderly became a theme for science and research in Germany, debates were dominated by the expierence and casusitics of social workers. As a result a gender bias developed in research and a picture of violence as a female conflict was institutionalized." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The white settler regime in South Africa, which was racist and sexist at the same time, oppressed and humiliated black men. In addition, the militarization of the society influenced the development of structural and gender-based violence in South Africa. After some innovative legal reforms and the introduction of gender policies by the ANC government in the 1990s some ANC politicians has become hostile against women's organisations and gender organisations. At the same time these organisations have to cope with the violent heritage of Apartheid." (author's abstract)

Human Capital in a Global and
Knowledge-based Economy. part II: Assessment at the EU Country Level. Report

(Autorenreferat)

We estimate the Mincerian coefficients for 12 West European countries using
the EU-SILC data for 2007 and use them as input in the optimisation problem of the

to education with respect to unemployment benefits, marginal and average tax
rates, maternity leave and childcare benefits." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Gender-specific knowledge in medicine is increasingly important. The implementation of this knowledge into medical training, further education, clinical practice, and medical-scientific research was the topic of an interdisciplinary conference at the Hannover Medical School in September 2010. On the one hand, clinical and scientific issues and new research findings from various medical subjects were discussed, which point to various biological as well as psycho-social and cultural differences between the sexes and most often are of vital importance for patients. On the other hand, possibilities and pitfalls for the implementation of this ever-growing body of knowledge into medical education were discussed by means of various pilot projects that integrate sex and gender aspects of health and illness in different ways into medical curricula."
