Details
Inhalt: "The article looks at the transition of Estonian society towards dual earner/ dual carer family model and focuses on fathers' decision regarding taking their parental leave. Based on theory of planned behaviour by Ajzen, data from 20 qualitative interviews with fathers of small children are analysed to explore the beliefs fathers have when it comes to parental leave. The analysis distinguishes between two images of 'good parenting' that play a role in the fathers' intention to take parental leave. First, there is an image of an outcome-oriented 'project manager' affected by failure anxiety, and second, there is a much more relaxed image of a 'good parent' as a 'companion' who values everyday contact and a close relationship with the child(ren)." Risky undertakings: the employment decision-making of women lawyers and accountants

Details
Inhalt: This study uses the concept of risk avoidance to analyze responses from in-depth interviews with a group of women lawyers and accountants about their employment decision-making in order to provide a deeper understanding of why and how some women come to choose government employment over private-sector employment. An analysis of interviews reveals that some women perceived work-family conflict, economic precariousness, and fewer protections against employers' arbitrary decision-making as potential risks associated with private-sector employment. To reduce these risks, some women "chose" to work in government rather than in the private sector. This study contributes to existing literature by identifying risk avoidance in employment decision-making as a response to work-family conflict and social class constraints and by illustrating why and how this risk avoidance occurs among some women in elite white-collar professions.

The changing face of the sacrificial Romanian woman in cinematographic discourses
Autor/in:
Andreescu, Florentina
Quelle: Studia Politica: Romanian Political Science Review, 11 (2011) 4, S 661-674
Details
Inhalt: Taking as a starting point one of the most relevant Romanian/Eastern European myths, Craftsman Manole, the article examines the female ideal set forth by Romanian filmography before and after 1989. During communism the female ideal had two variants: heroine worker and heroine mother. In the films produced after 1989, we identify a topic that, though not having changed its position within the structure of fantasy, has lost its grip on female desire and consent. The sacrifice performed by women now lacks its moral foundation and is portrayed as an action performed at the behest of a selfish, obscene patriarchal interest. The female sacrifice, performed without a moral justification, becomes a traumatic event. The female ideal after the revolution has two versions: the traditional role of the wife or daughter and the disaffiliated role of a prostitute.

'Looking like my favourite Barbie' - Online Gender Construction of Tween Girls in Estonia and in Sweden

Siibak, Andra; Hernwall, Patrik

Details
Inhalt: "The aim of this article is to analyse how tween girls in Estonia and in Sweden describe and discover their
gender identities when selecting profi le images for social networking sites (SNSs). To this end, interviews
with tweens in Estonia (N=21) and in Sweden (N=31) were carried out. As SNSs largely exist without the
recognisable surveillance of adults, children can explore the social matrix of relating to others, and they
also feel safe to try out and display diff erent constructions and reconstructions of their identity. At the
same time, in communicating online, impression management is formulated with constant worry about
how to construct one’s virtual identity so that it will be appreciated and accepted by one’s peer group. In
this article, our analysis focuses on the most popular posing strategies used by tween girls, which, it turns
out, are often marked by reproduction of the dominant heterosexual cultural norms and values." (author's abstract)

Reporting Romania's 2009 European elections: press coverage and viability of the male and female candidates
Autor/in:
Iorgoveanu, Aurora
Quelle: Eurolimes, (2011) Supl. 3, S 249-262
Details
Inhalt: This article aims to analyze and compare the press coverage of the two most visible male and female candidates for a Member of the European Parliament office during the campaign for the European elections held in Romania, June 2009. The present study examines a month of coverage in the four most influential broadsheets and tabloids in Romania: Cancan, EvenimentulZilei, Gândul and Libertatea. Using a design of content analysis, the results of this paper emphasize that Elena Băsescu received less coverage than did George Becali. There were also found qualitative differences in coverage, attributed to Elena Băsescu’s gender, who was depicted as not being viable to represent the Romanians interests in Brussels.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The findings presented in this article have emerged from the qualitative study 'The glass partitioning wall' (an analogue to the well known 'glass ceiling') in which 40 Austrian couples - with at least one child (aged six or younger) have been interviewed about their division of housework. Based on the results, a well-grounded theoretical explanation model for the division of housework could be developed. The leading factors of the model are internal factors, the 'preferences', of the partners, which include 'gender equity in the division of tasks', 'perceived competence in household (or family) tasks' and 'standards for household tasks'. In the qualitative study on the individual level as well as on the partnership-level specific patterns in couples' attitudes could be identified. For example, a high degree of perceived own competences for household tasks is mostly attended by high and elaborated standards." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The daily routine of single-parent families, especially those with single mothers as breadwinners for their young children, is plagued by multifaceted challenges. These challenges are outlined against the background of secondary analyses of the 2009 Labor Force Survey (microcensus), EU-SILC 2008 and GGS 2008/09. In addition, qualitative interviews have been carried out in selected areas of life with single mothers who have caretaking obligations and nurture children younger than 15 years of age concurrently. Despite a broad access to earnings, lone mothers show an excessive risk of poverty and deprivation. They are subjected to lack of time and resources, facing the distinctive challenge of being responsible for coordinating childcare and other professional issues. The coping strategies developed in addressing these requirements have been assessed. Finally, the present contribution considers the need for action on the part of welfare policies." Gendered Negotiations: Engagements with 'Modernity' and Identity Change amongst Chiapeneco Youth in Mexico
Autor/in:
Ruse, Jamie-Leigh
Quelle: Studies of Transition States and Societies, 3 (2011) 2, S 26-41
Details
Inhalt: "In this paper I wish to examine how changes have occurred in the processes of gendered identity construction amongst Mexican youths through examining local experiences of global, and specifically Mexican, modernities. Based on f eldwork carried out amongst youths in the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, my analysis addresses how youths plan for the future in the context of economic and political marginalisation, and how this affects the way in which they pursue different forms of romantic relationships. I also address changes that have occurred in youths’ understandings, perceptions and performances of their gendered identities in the context of a highly developed local tourist industry, the advent of mass media, and new online social worlds. My study shows how gendered identity construction amongst youths here becomes context-dependent, and how it encompasses individual agency whilst at the same time being negotiated through wider structural and social limitations. I also wish to demonstrate how changing gendered identities amongst youths are constantly constructed and renegotiated by individuals seeking to accommodate notions of modernity with perceptions of the traditional, and how these individuals balance contesting notions of gendered identities within themselves. This is, therefore, a study of local and gendered identity change amongst youths in the context of localised modernities and rapid social change." (author's abstract)

Details
Inhalt: Within the scope of the research project "Female Social Democrats on the Parliamentary Council and the German Bundestag 1948/49-1969," 38 biographies from all the women of the Parliamentary Council (1948/49) and the first five legislative periods (1949-1969) of the German Bundestag were conducted. This paper is about its members Frieda NADIG and Dr. Elisabeth SELBERT. First the methodology and the body of source material will be elucidated. Thereafter, the biographies of the two female members of Social Democrats in the parliament will be introduced up to the point when they were both members of the parliamentary council. The National Socialist period will be discussed within this context since it forms the backdrop for the later political work of both politicians. Thirdly, their common political fight for the inclusion of the sentence: "males and females have equal rights" into the constitution of the German Republic will be presented. Finally, through reviewing the continuing work in various political bodies, the significance of the political institutions that influenced and shaped their lives will be put into historical context.

Autor/in:

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Transformation processes towards sustainable development have been until now blocked by old structures and institutions. This paper analyses such blockades in the field of theories and concepts that try to reach sustainability with the help of old rationales - with old concepts of justice (John Rawls), productivity (Adam Smith) and property (John Lokke). Rawls' theory of justice cannot aid sustainability because it is not capable of defining justice with regard to future generations. Adam Smith's concept of productivity cannot lead to sustainability because it externalizes the basic productivities for a sustainable economy - the productivities of female care work and of nature. Finally, Locke's concept of property: In his theory property is only created turning nature (resources) into commodities. This concept of property is combined with power over resources and power to exclude others from using them. All of this clarifies that: The history of sustainable development needs totally different stories in order to be told." (author's abstract)
