(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Recent social gerontology and sociological research suggest that not only personal factors but also the socio-spatial context is assumed to be a factor in explaining quality of life. Together they make up the objective action context for subjective perceptions and evaluations of an individual, which are relevant for behavior. Using survey data from 2010 with 593 older women living at home (60+), the social and spatial aspects are considered as explanatory variables for the subjective quality of life. The analysis shows: subjective life quality of older women depends largely on the perception of safety, social embeddedness and their health status. While quality of life can mainly be explained by socio-spatial aspects of the community or neighborhood, feelings of insecurity depend on the size of the community, the extent of social activities (participation) and are also common among vulnerable groups of older people with low education and health."

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper addresses friendship relations among male youth (aged 17-20) of early stages of desistance. While delinquent peer groups are often considered a cause and consequence of individual delinquent behaviour in youth by criminological research, the meaning of friendship networks for desistance is largely neglected. The authors analysed 20 qualitative semi-structured interviews with male youth to explore the rote of friendship relations in supporting desistance from juvenile delinquency. Especially the volatile dynamics within friendship relations and changing friendship concepts among the youth appear to be crucial in this context. Results indicate that friendship relations may serve as an essential part of the social network of young people in supporting non-delinquent behaviour." (author's abstract)

Identifying the barriers to women's agency in domestic violence: the tensions between women's personal experiences and systemic responses
Autor/in:
Aldridge, Jo
Quelle: Social Inclusion, 1 (2013) 1, S 3-12
Details
Inhalt: Despite advances in knowledge and understanding about the impacts of domestic violence on women's lives, global research on violence against women shows there is a need for research that not only places women centre stage in research praxis, but also that involves them more collaboratively in genuine dialogue about their experiences, including their agentic stances. This is especially the case for marginalised and socially excluded women victims of domestic violence, such as those who are not known or do not present to services and who survive abusive relationships alone or with little outside support. Evidence from two studies reported here-secondary analysis of women with severe and enduring mental health problems and a collaborative narrative project with unsupported women victims of domestic violence-suggest that women's capacity for agency are compromised by a number of critical factors, and that these are also reflected in the tensions between micro-macro analyses and understanding of the impact of domestic violence on women. This article considers the barriers to women's agency from the women's perspective and in the context of broader, systemic dynamics, including the denial or obscuring of abuse by governments and states and the consequences of stringent fiscal retrenchment that put women at increased risk of domestic violence.

Credibility assessments as "normative leakage": asylum applications, gender and class

Wikström, Hanna; Johansson, Thomas
Quelle: Social Inclusion, 1 (2013) 2, S 92-101
Details
Inhalt: Based on the assumption that credibility assessments function as "normative leakage" within the asylum process, we analyse how narratives of gender and class are articulated, rendered meaningful, or silenced in credibility assessments. Two cases concerning male applicants are selected in order to illustrate these processes. In relation to the existing concepts of internal/external credibility, we wish to introduce the concept of social credibility, which focuses on how the assessors read different socio-cultural narratives. While previous research has shown that the postcolonial will to protect women favours women as victims of patriarchal cultures, we wish to point out the continuity of this line of argumentation in relation to male and female applicants by adopting a theoretical generalization: male applicants instead become situated at the other end of the spectrum of postcolonial notions of modernity as non-victims, victims of other circumstances or perpetrators. We argue that these processes are accentuated in relation to credibility assessments. In order to prevent processes of social exclusion and to enhance inclusive practice, authorities need to acknowledge the "normative leakage" associated with the assessment process.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Ecuador's new constitution declared the concept of Buen Vivir, of the Good Life, as a leading one. This article examines the concept from a feminist point of view, based on positions of care economy and feminist political economy. A socially and environmentally just society is examined by considering two radical changes in Buen Vivir: the new conceptual definition of work in a solidary economic system and the recognition of rights of the nature. The broad partizipation of the population is identified as a decisive utopian approach in the building and implementation of Buen Vivir. Even though, or solely because, the politics are not leading towards a reasonable implementation until now, the bottom-up transformational process is well underway." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: Labor markets of Turkey are characterized by low female labor force participation when compared with the OECD, neighbour states and EU averages. Besides, the female labor force participation exhibits an unexplained and suprising declining trend in the last decades. The paper attemps to illuminate the phenomenon searching for contingencies in data presented by working women in a microfinance clientele survey in suburban Ankara, especially focusing on status and family related interrelationships that could provide explanation for the low relative number of working women in labor markets of Turkey, testing the Under-participation trap hypothesis

"Talking point(s)": what Singaporean female politicians choose to say in parliament
Autor/in:
Devasahayam, Theresa W.
Quelle: Femina Politica - Zeitschrift für feministische Politikwissenschaft, 22 (2013) 2, S 34-51
Details
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper investigates the implications of women's underrepresentation in politics in relation to the kinds of issues they raise in Parliament. It has two objectives. First it raises the question of whether the current cohort of female MPs in Singapore has different political interests from their male colleagues, and second, it seeks to understand the larger concern of whether female MPs see their role in politics to be different from that of men's. Through an investigation of the kinds of issues female and male MPs have raised and discussed in Parliament, the paper argues that because the current cohort of female MPs operate within a paradigm that is masculine, they tend not to voice their opinion exclusively on issues thought to belong traditionally to the domain of women but rather on a range of issues. By not restricting themselves to discussing women's issues only, it is evident that these women have consciously chosen to demonstrate that they are equal to men and they are capable of handling any issue. Among Singaporean female MPs, there is an implicit understanding that they were voted in based on their capacity to contribute and serve the community to fulfil the goals of their respective parties rather than on their gender identity."
