Inhalt: The article is conceived as a contribution to a critical reading of opinion data and the presentation of ISSP modules on Work Orientations from 1997 and 2005 in the Czech Republic. In the first part, some methodological problems regarding the inspection of work and job values are presented using examples drawn from previous research. In the second part, the framework of systemic transition is set up and hypotheses are presented regarding work values and attitudes from the perspective of gender and age, education and occupation. In the third part, a comparison is made of people’s expectations regarding their work and jobs with their perceived fulfilment. In the fourth part, we consider the perceived location of workers between the distant worlds of family and firms and inspect factors of work and job satisfaction. In conclusion, we discuss the role of subjective perceptions in the economy and the question of a ‘true’ change in values during the transition.

Inhalt: 'Point of departure of this article is the learning experience, from which both authors benefited while carrying out the Vienna EQUAL development partnership project 'Managing Diversity - Empowerment by Diversity' (2002-2005). This article deals with the challenges that arise when introducing Managing Diversity as a new concept at the company level. Our goal is to contribute to current discourses and to enhance the understanding with respect to the implementation of the Managing Diversity tool, particularly in Austria. The main research questions focus on defining diversity, explaining its basic concepts, determining which groups are targeted by diversity, as well as reflecting the preconditions for the development of a diversity competence. Based on the authors' experience with an Austrian subsidiary firm of a multinational corporation in the metal and electronics sector, conclusions are presented, which illustrate that major efforts still are necessary to ensure that Managing Diversity will develop to an integral part of company culture.' (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In many industrialized countries, employment types have increasingly diversified due to a rise in the number of irregular workers, including part-timers and dispatched workers, along with the feminization of employment. Particularly since the 1990s, trade unions have been urged to take necessary measures for this diversification. This paper aims to analyze the transition of trade unions' employment policies and their organizational structure from gender perspectives, focusing on the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (Rengo) in Japan and German Trade Union Federation (DGB) in Germany, and examines the issues of labour movements and their new possibilities. Specifically, considering the differences in the framework of industrial relations in Japan and Germany, the paper analyzes the policies on unionization and equal treatment after the 1990s. On the basis of this analysis, the paper points out that the future of labour movements in Japan and Germany can be sought in further promotion of gender policies, the realization of equal treatment, re-evaluation of the concept of 'labour', and the implementation of collective agreements stipulating all these." Sustainable work - and women? Pleading for gender-sensitive socio-ecological research
Autor/in:
Littig, Beate

Inhalt: This article deals with the emerging discourse on sustainable work, which has been triggered by the ecologically initiated discussions on sustainable development. It gives a critical overview of the most important approaches to this subject from a feminist perspective. From a feminist point of view many of the current concepts of 'sustainable society' and 'sustainable work' have several deficiencies. The main point of criticism is that these approaches do not consider gender differences appropriately, especially with regard to the gendered division of work. Feminist approaches to the sustainable redefinition of work, on the other hand, tend to be essentialist and therefore have to be looked upon critically, too. Trying to escape both of these pitfalls, the author suggests a gender-sensitive socio-ecological approach to the complex field of sustainable work. This approach views socio-ecological problems as gendered problems and appreciates a transdisciplinary access to questions of sustainable development.

Gender Differences among Economically Active University Graduates
Autor/in:
Cermakova, Marie
Quelle: Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review, 7 (1999) 2, S 127-144
Details
Inhalt: Data from a project titled 'Men and Women University Graduates' & other available statistical data are drawn on to explore areas of difference in the positions of men & women with university degrees in Czech society, focusing on their position in the labor market in terms of salary differences & attitudes to performance & career. It is hypothesized that the continuing gender differences between graduates cannot be attributed to the nature of the female workforce. The secondary position of these women on the labor market is due to noneconomic factors. Topics include the existing guarantees for equality of men & women in Czech society, the double standard of university qualifications, the link between the university-educated female labor force & the female sectors of the labor market, the 'unclear identity' of women graduates, & the low level of emotional support from these women's social surroundings. Also considered are the individualized, personalized ways of creating a social position that are used by women graduates on the market or in their career, highlighting the fact that these approaches are both risky & ineffective in the search for equal status or the implementation of equal opportunities policies.

Women and Employment
Autor/in:
Kucharova, Vera
Quelle: Sociologický časopis / Czech Sociological Review, 7 (1999) 2, S 179-194
Details
Inhalt: Presents results of the 1998 research project 'The Status of Women & Men in the Czech Republic' (N = 1,000 respondents ages 20-60), inspired by the need to obtain information on the circumstances of enforcement of European Union (EU) legislation on equal opportunities in the Czech Republic in connection with its application for EU membership. The public perception & consciousness of equal opportunities are investigated in terms of pay, access to employment, promotion, & vocational training, as well as legal knowledge concerning employment. Reconciling family & working life is the crucial problem in the Czech Republic, as in other countries. It can be understood as a result of both modernization & the special national situation that has resulted from the social & economic transition. Comparison of conditions of women's employment with their professional expectations & satisfaction reveals the social determination of these, as well as some stereotypes in understanding men's & women's roles that influence women's position in the labor market.

Autor/in:
Krell, Gertraude
Quelle: Psychologie und Gesellschaftskritik, 7 (1983) 2/3, S 7-23
Details
