Inhalt: This book examines persistent gender inequality in higher education, and asks what is preventing change from occurring. The editors and contributors argue that organizational resistance to gender equality is the key explanation; reflected in the endorsement of discourses such as excellence, choice, distorted intersectionality, revitalized biological essentialism and gender neutrality. These discourses implicitly and explicitly depict the status quo as appropriate, reasonable and fair: ultimately impeding efforts and attempts to promote gender equality. Drawing on research from around the world, this book explores the limits and possibilities of challenging these harmful discourses, focusing on the state and universities themselves as levers for change. It stresses the importance of institutional transformation, the vital contribution of feminist activists and the importance of women’s deceptively ‘small victories’ in the academy
The volume is a must-read for anyone interested in fairness and justice around gender". Professor Patricia Yancey Martin, Florida State University, USA
This book examines persistent gender inequality in higher education, and asks what is preventing change from occurring. The editors and contributors argue that organizational resistance to gender equality is the key explanation; reflected in the endorsement of discourses such as excellence, choice, distorted intersectionality, revitalized biological essentialism and gender neutrality. These discourses implicitly and explicitly depict the status quo as appropriate, reasonable and fair: ultimately impeding attempts to promote gender equality. Drawing on research from around the world, this book explores the limits and possibilities of challenging these misleading discourses, focusing on the state and universities themselves as levers for change. It stresses the importance of institutional transformation, the vital contribution of feminist activists and the importance of women’s deceptively ‘small victories’ in the academy.

Universities as political institutions : Higher education institutions in the middle of academic, economic and social pressures

Weimer, Leasa; Nokkala, Terhi

Details
Inhalt: Universities can be viewed and studied as political institutions, especially considering that they sit at the crossroads of social, cultural, and economic pressures. The internal and external environment of higher education brings with it multiple and complex relationships as well as power struggles. Within these contested political spaces, there are phenomena to be studied.
While the field of higher education draws from a multitude of disciplines, some scholars argue that only recently has scholarship focused on the political perspectives of higher education. To better understand the politics and policies of higher education, Universities as Political Institutions illuminates a variety of ways that researchers view and study universities as a political institution, from considering the national and international political pressures shaping higher education to the analysis of responses and political action from within the ivory tower.
The 2017 annual CHER conference in Jyväskylä (Finland) brought together 213 scholars from 30 countries. This book includes a selection of papers and keynote presentations from this conference. The thematic approach of the book reflects the 2017 conference theme: "Universities as Political Institutions – Higher Education Institutions in the Middle of Academic, Economic, and Social Pressures". The theme focused on multiple and often complex relations and relationships, internal and external, to higher education institutions. In this context, "political" refers not only to definitions, uses, and users of power but more broadly to a variety of relationships among different actors and agencies responsible for making, executing, or resisting decisions concerning higher education institutions.

Inhalt: The title of this volume captures a central question in contemporary Gender Studies and Sociology. It has, in different ways, preoccupied the researchers who contribute to this special volume for many years. Inspired by feminist theory and practice, it addresses the gendering, the complex gendering, of knowledge, science, research, policy, equality, academia, universities and higher education, along with many interlinked reflections and memories on working together, collegiality and friendship.

The changing role of women in higher education : Academic and leadership issues
Herausgeber/in:
Eggins, Heather
Quelle: Cham: Springer Verlag (The changing academic profession in international comparative perspective, 17), 2017. xxviii, 310 S
Details
Inhalt: This book sets out to examine the changing role of women in higher education with an emphasis on academic and leadership issues. The scope of the book is international, with a wide range of contributors, whose expertise spans sociology, social science, economics, politics, public policy and linguistic studies, all of whom have a major interest in global education. The volume examines the ways in which the leadership role and academic roles of women in higher education are changing in the twenty first century, offering an up-to-date policy discussion of this area. It is in some sense a sequel to the earlier volume by the same Editor, Women as Leaders and Managers in Higher Education, but with very different emphases. The pressures now are to respond to the demands of the technological age and to those of the global economy. Today there are more highly qualified and experienced female academics, and more expectation of their gaining the highest posts. Challenges still remain, particularly in terms of the top posts, and in equal pay. The discussion of global policy issues affecting the role of women in higher education is combined with country case studies, several of which are comparative. Together they examine and unpack the particular situations of women in a wide range of higher education systems, from Brazil to the US to Europe to Africa and the Far East, noting the shift towards more flexibility, more personal choice and a greater acceptance by society of their abilities. This volume is a useful and influential addition to published work in this area, and is aimed at the intelligent general reader as well as the scholar interested in this topic.

Higher education studies in a global environment : Vol. 2

Kehm, Barbara M.; Teichler, Ulrich
Quelle: Kassel: Jenior (Werkstattberichte, 75), 2014. 294 S.
Details
Inhalt: "From 2004 to 2012 young, open-minded persons from all over the world joined the Master Programme Higher Education Research and Development (MAHE) at the University of Kassel. In 2012, a first volume (Barbara M. Kehm and Ulrich Teichler, eds. Higher Education Studies in a Global Environment. Vol. 1. Kassel 2012; Werkstattberichte, No. 74) presented the highlights of eight master theses written by students graduating from this programme. This second and final volume presents the highlights from 13 further master theses which have been rated unanimously as 'very good'. The authors of these articles come from ten different countries. Most articles address specific issues of higher education in a single or in two countries - among them often the authors' home countries. Since the programme offered the students the challenge of bringing together prevailing concepts in higher education research and dominating discourses in higher education in their own countries or in other countries they developed an interest in, the master theses mirror the tensions between the assumptions of worldwide pressures and worldwide valid concepts on the one hand, and the experience of varied situations on the other." Inhalt: "Internationalization and international mobility, inclusiveness, excellence and funding are themes high on the higher education agenda. There is no shortage of literature on them, and there are conferences galore devoted to them. But they are usually dealt with in isolation, which leads to a distorting 'single issue' view of higher education. This book - and the conference it emerged from - tried to avoid this mistake. It looks at the 'inter-relationships' between the four issues. Can a socially inclusive and responsible university also achieve academic excellence? Can only rich universities be truly international, or do universities become rich through internationalization? Is excellence possible without strong funding, or does it presuppose it? These are only some of questions which this volume addresses. The ten contributions developed out of presentations given at the 2012 Annual Conference of the Academic Cooperation Association (ACA). The production of this book, as well as the above-mentioned conference, was supported by the European Commission in the framework of its Lifelong Learning Program." (publisher's description).
