(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Based on an empirical case study conducted in the Landesbank Berlin, this article seeks to uncover starting points for and barriers to enforcing gender equality in the banking sector. Taking a holistic perspective of gainful work and life, the structural conditions of in-company gender-equality politics and organizational development are reconstructed, as are the gender arrangements and subjective orientations of polled executives. Our thesis is that female executives in particular, but increasingly also young male executives, are developing a 'reflexive career orientation' within which they are demanding more gender equality and personal scope to shape their life at work and outside of work. The result could be new coalitions within companies for gaining better recognition of reproductive needs. However, these potentialities for gender politics are still blocked in the face of strong pressure to cut costs and generate income in a financial market capitalism which is constantly in crisis."

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Based on the great importance of gainful employment as a medium of socialization, this article analyses the so-called standard employment relationship, which represents the normality and norm of gainful employment in Germany. With regard to three different feminist power contexts, this core labour and social policy institution is theorized as a power and domination relationship that virtually requires the exclusion of women, makes gender inequalities within the labour market and in regards to social security permanent, and that ultimately prevents changes in gender relations. The article further argues that the institution thereby acts as a barrier for an egalitarian social participation of women and men. In order to develop a framework for a new standard employment relationship, the authors outline a new concept for conceptualizing employment. This concept comprehends employment in its social context and as a result provides a basis for gender equality." (author's abstract)

Gender role attitudes in Italy: 1988-2008 - a path-dependency story of traditionalism
Autor/in:
Lomazzi, Vera

Inhalt: Considering gender role attitudes as part of a broader cultural change related to the modernization process, this study adopts a path-dependency approach to analyze the support for the role of women in the public sphere in Italy since 1988. Modernization processes varied across Italian regions and the paper explores how different gender patterns developed accordingly. Using pooled data from European Values Survey, World Values Survey, and International Social Survey Program, the author assesses if this specific change is part of the postmaterialist shift and investigates the mechanisms of change carrying out cohort decomposition methods. The results address a reinforcement of traditionalism mainly due to the period effect that shows regional differences given by history.

Manjunatha, N. K.; Hurakadli, S. M.

Details
Inhalt: The modern period witnessed the increased gender disparity reflected in sex-ratio, literacy and education, employment and wage-rates and several other sociocultural and behavioral indicators of empowerment (Nangia, 2005). Gender equality is more than a goal in itself. It is a precondition for meeting the challenges of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development and building good governance - Kofi Annan (Personal, Archive, Mahanta, & Nayak, 2013). The present paper examines the extent of gender disparity in Belagavi District based on literacy and sex ratio using secondary data. We found that literacy rate in study area was 76.93% in 2001 which is increased to 82.90% in 2011 and sex ratio in the study area was 960 in 2001 which is increased to 973 in 2011. There are wide disparities from rural to urban sex ratio as well as rural to urban literacy rate. The urban sex ratio is higher than rural sex ratio in study area. The rural sex ratio is 970 and urban sex ratio is 979 females per thousand males in the 2011. We found that in Belagavi district, there is reduction in gender disparities from 2001 to 2011 but the reduction rate is very slow.

Der vergeschlechtlichte Staat: zum Verhältnis von Freiheit, Geschlecht und Staat bei Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Autor/in:
Nagy, Nicola
Quelle: GENDER - Zeitschrift für Geschlecht, Kultur und Gesellschaft, 9 (2017) 2, S 122-136
Details
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article describes the role and importance of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's gender characters as well as the regime of gender relations it constitutes with regard to the philosopher's model of the state. It aims to show that Rousseau's oeuvre is not primarily interesting in terms of gender and gender relations because it contains androcentric and misogynist thoughts and ideas. What is striking, rather, is the fact that the condition(s) for Rousseau’s republic, as the setting which is supposed to help establish civil liberty, are based on a gender regime that constitutively excludes women from this civil liberty. Nevertheless, this concept works without dehumanizing or pejorative implications in respect of women and their social tasks on a theoretical level. In this sense, Rousseau can be said to have paved the way for later modern bourgeois gender theories." (author's abstract)
