Inhalt: "This paper uses the Syracuse University PSID-GSOEP Equivalent Data File to explore women's employment patterns over two four-year periods in the American and West German panel surveys. Four major theoretical traditions illuminate differences between employed and nonemployed women. Static labor supply models account for demographic differences. A dynamic life cycle framework finds greater stability in the lives of the nonemployed. Cultural and institutional factors underlie the to 15 percent higher employment rates among American women. Finally, greater uncertainty reflected in divorce, poverty, and a weaker safety net are also associated with higher levels of women's employment in the United States." (author's abstract)
