Inhalt: This publication is based on presentations at the 2nd Conference on Gender Equality
in Higher Education at the University of Zurich,Switzerland, September 2000. Women
from former socialist countries but also from other continents offered a presentation
of the situation of gender (in)equality in higher education in their country. Because
of the diversity and the colourfulness of the whole we decided to have those papers
published.i This is the result. Involved here are case studies or overviews from all
five continents without any claim of completeness or representativeness. Nevertheless,
we find an impressive picture that could be summarised as:women in higher education
all over the world - highly socially and culturally differentiated but equally positioned.Exploring
the situation of gender in higher education in Europe - and this is the point of view
of the editors of this volume - we find the following picture: the higher the status
in the hierarchical structure of higher education, the lower the ratio of women (vertical
inequality),and women choose other fields of study or majors than men do (horizontal
inequality). The typical female subject decision coincides with the traditional idea
of women to be responsible for the family also if they strive for a professional career.
Women have to reconcile family and employment and this in turn has consequences on
their subject decision but also on their real career opportunities in that employers
prefer men and that women often hesitate when confronted with a career. In this volume
we broaden our view and involve pictures from all over the world (Autorenreferat).|
