(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The survey uses a nationwide sample of N = 597 participants for an investigation into German professors' leadership behaviour from the perspective of academic, technical and administrative staff. According to the data collected, the average leadership behaviour can be characterised as a mainly cooperative, partly laissez-faire and, to a limited extent, autocratic leadership style. A cluster analysis has revealed five typical combinations of the three leadership styles. The combination described as 'guided cooperation' was displayed by one out of four professors. It can be regarded as best practice. Two combinations seem to be particularly problematic: They were characterised as 'unconcerned coexistence' and 'authoritarian dominance', each applying to about 15 per cent of the professors. Furthermore, good leadership goes along with a specific value orientation displayed in professors' behaviour. The article concludes with some suggestions for increasing professors' opportunities for the development of their leadership skills, both before and on the job." (author's abstract)
