"Mit der zunehmenden Anerkennung der Rolle, die Wissen und Forschung in Bezug auf Innovation und wirtschaftlichen Erfolg spielen, stieg der Bedarf an zuverlässigen Informationen über hochqualifizierte Personen, insbesondere Doktoratsinhaber. Diese Veröffentlichung beschäftigt sich daher vor allem mit Doktoratsinhabern und analysiert - beginnend mit dem Zugang zu höherer Bildung bis hin zu Einzelheiten im Zusammenhang mit der Beschäftigung - Angebot und Nachfrage in diesem Bereich. 3 Prozent der Hochschulstudenten in der EU 2004 absolvierten ein Doktoratsstudium. Über 40 Prozent der Doktoranden in Griechenland und Zypern dissertierten in naturwissenschaftlichen Fächern. 2004 gab es doppelt so viele Absolventen eines Doktoratsstudiums in Europa wie in den USA. Schweden verzeichnete die höchste Abschlussquote bei neuen Doktoratsabsolventen. Die Arbeitslosenquote bei Doktoratsinhabern in Deutschland betrug nur 3,2 Prozent. 88 Prozent der berufstätigen Doktoratsinhaber in Portugal sind Wissenschaftler." (Autorenreferat)
"Demand for reliable information on highly skilled people, and more specifically doctorate holders, has risen as the role played by knowledge and research in innovation and economic performance is increasingly recognised. The main focus in this paper is on doctorate holders and will review the supply of and demand for doctorate holders starting from the education inflows up to the detail of their employment. Doctorate holders form the most educated group of the population and those most likely to contribute to the development and expansion of knowledge, science and technology. Despite this, only 3% of tertiary students were studying for a doctoral degree in 2004. The highest graduation rate for doctorates was found in Sweden. In Estonia and Cyprus more than 60% of the new doctorate graduates were women." (author's abstract)
