(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'Research on processes of socialisation repeatedly refers to gender differences in aggressiveness. It is often assumed that women more likely react to stress with an internalising behaviour and develop psychosomatic symptoms more easily than men. In contrast to this men react more likely with aggressiveness, which is said to have a release function on stress. This representative study of pupils analyses the connections between aggressive feelings, aggressive behaviour and psychosomatic symptoms. It shows that aggressive behaviour neither for girls nor for boys leads to a release of stress, but more likely to an increase in health impairments.' (author's abstract)|
Soziologie, Recht, Geschlecht: Bemerkungen über ein schwieriges Verhältnis
Titelübersetzung:Sociology, law, gender: comments on a difficult relationship
Autor/in:
Lucke, Doris
Quelle: Soziale Probleme, 7 (1996) 1, S 27-42
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'The article deals with the relations between sociology, right and gender. In a critical view the question is discussed, how it was possible that both professions and disciplines could ignore problems of gender for such a long time. Grounded by evident causes the authoress argues for a future sociology of law which regards the category of gender as well.' (author's abstract)|
Economic Change and Change in Well-Being in the Czech Republic, with Comparisons to Married Women in the United States

Inhalt: Examines the effects of economic change on individual well-being for a panel of married Czech women compared with a US sample from IA (N = 192 & 386, respectively, in 1990/91). Questionnaire data show that respondents who were forced to make economic adjustments reducing their standard of living also reported increased health problems & depressive symptoms. Contrary to some US findings the relationship between economic adjustments & change in depressive symptoms was strongest among those who reported having the strongest sense of personal control (mastery) & the highest perceived social support. Compared with the US sample, married Czech women reported more depressive symptoms, had more health problems, & were lower in feelings of mastery. In addition, Czech women recorded significantly stronger paths linking education to changes in health conditions & depressive symptoms, whereas US women had significantly stronger paths linking actual economic conditions to subsequent economic adjustments. Data suggest that the US stress-distress model applies in the Czech Republic as well, but further understanding of the differentiated role of social support & mastery for Czech & US women is necessray to more completely interpret the observed interactions.

Ignored but Assumed. Family and Gender between Public and Private Realm
Autor/in:
Havelkova, Hana

Inhalt: Posits that the role of women as the bearers of strategies to transform the public sphere within the private sphere has been ignored but assumed in the context of postcommunist social transformation in the Czech Republic because of the omission of the public, private, & gender concepts as analytical sociological tools. The private-public relationship in modern society is addressed as an open process in which gender relations are not only formed, but in return, also form the connotations of these spheres according to gender understanding. On this theoretical base, possible ways of rethinking the model of the bourgeois family, which, in Czech society, has a normative power, are suggested with reference to Hanna Arendt's & Jurgen Habermas's concepts. Thus, the current process of socialism under changing conditions can be dealt with as a complex problem of interrelations between the private & public spheres.
