(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This study describes the typical career structure and development of professors in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Biographical core indicators demonstrate that, on average, the professors in our sample received their doctorate at the age of 30. They finished their habilitation (i.e. required second doctoral dissertation) seven years later and were first nominated for a professorship at 39. Obviously, careers are delayed over time: In the 1990s, for instance, the candidates were initially nominated when tey were in their mid-40s; in the early 1970s, they were in their mid-30s. Internationally, the labor market for professors in political science is most restricted in Austria and most open in Switzerland. In Germany, 100 positions will become available due to retirement within the first decade of the new millennium." (author's abstract)

(IAB2)
Inhalt: "The main objective of this paper is to examine decision-making processes concerning important infrequent lifestyle decisions (relating to matters such as career and house selection) among a sample of dual-career households in the Greater Nottingham area. The remainder of this paper is divided into three sections. First, theoretical perspectives on labour market participation and households are examined, and secondly, information on dual-career households - including the case study evidence - is presented and assessed. The final section contains the conclusions." (author's abstract, IAB-Doku)

Along the leaky pipeline

Inhalt: US women drop out of research more often than men, so that by the time they reach the end of the 'leaky pipeline' — from undergraduates through to faculty appointments — they are substantially under-represented. By contrast, ethnic minorities — African Americans, Hispanics and American Indians — tend not even to begin science studies.
