Titelübersetzung:The crisis of the national master narratives: a plea for plural, interdependent narratives

Inhalt: "With the concept of a 'master narrative', the cultural turn prodded contemporary historians to become more self-reflexive about their contribution to larger interpretations. Taking a critical look at the dominant explanations of the German past, this essay argues that the national narrative failed with the atrocities of World War Two, while the communist story was discredited by the overthrow of the SED-regime. But West German Gesellschaftsgeschichte also appeared increasingly outdated, since it was reluctant to admit new impulses like everyday history. However, the rising pretenders to grand narrative status were only partially successful, since the Holocaust fixation could not explain post-war recivilization, gender history provided only a partial view, Europeanization tended to legitimize the EU and global history was too encompassing to explain the German past. Instead of narrowing into another master narrative, the new plurality should be seen as an opportunity for a multi-vocal approach to the past, that ought to analyze how of multiple stories are entangled." U.S. elite and public views an anti-terrorist military action: are women less militaristic?

Inhalt: "Increasing numbers of U.S. women in elite positions lead us to ask if women and men share the same anti-terrorist policy attitudes, or whether elite (and non-elite) women are less militaristic. Using data from four surveys of elites and masses from 1986 to 2004, we examine men's and women's attitudes towards the use of three types of force against terrorists and how these have changed over time. Elite and non-elite women are typically less supportive than their men counterparts of military action against terrorists, but after the September 11, 2001 attacks die gender gap decreased and large majorities favoured such action. Among elites, but not the public, gender differences diminish among those with similar demographic and political positions. With negligible gender differences among similarly placed elites, and high levels of militarism among the masses, we conclude that U.S. elites have broad latitude in setting anti-terrorist policies." Rekrutierungsprozesse österreichischer Regierungsmitglieder im Geschlechtervergleich
Titelübersetzung:Recruitment processes of Austrian members of government in a gender comparative perspective
Autor/in:
Schwediauer, Veronika
Quelle: SWS-Rundschau, 52 (2012) 1, S 47-68
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Political recruitment processes represent products of the societal and political power relations, which bear gendered structures. A gender-comparative analysis of political recruitment processes is apt to uncover these gendered power relations. A theoretical perspective on power is completely absent in the hitherto produced literature on political recruitment (and gender). Bourdieu's power-centered concepts of field and capital are valuable tools to bridge this gap and to endeavor a gender-comparative (power) analysis of recruitment processes. This article investigates the capital forms and the political careers of the Austrian members of government and their gender-specific effects from the time frame of 1966 to 2006." (author's abstract)

März 2012 in Osnabrück
Titelübersetzung:'Strategies and Social Networks of Rulers' Women in Antiquity': international conference in Osnabrück, 22–24 March 2012

Wigger, Melanie
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The functions of a ruler, such as being the leader and the protector of his subjects and governing a system of give-and-take, are very often summarised by the term 'patronage'. However, this term does not take account of the fact that kings and emperors quite often had one or more women at their sides. Whether or not these women match the contemporary stereotype of a strong woman supporting a successful man can be discussed using the term 'matronage' as a counterpart to 'patronage'. This fairly new approach provides an opportunity in particular to cover the courses of action and spheres of influence of these women, who were often disregarded in historical research. This research topic was addressed and integrated into a historical framework at the conference 'Strategies and Social Networks of Rulers’ Women in Antiquity'." (author's abstract)
