Inhalt: This article discusses the beauty practice of body hair removal by women. By analyzing an article of the women's magazin Brigitte Woman, I want to look into the field of empowerment on the one hand and subjugation on the other hand with regard to this practice. Furthermore I want to point out that, despite its apparently critical tone, the way in which this issue is debated in the magazine does not make a fundamental critique possible.

The Electoral System and Women’s Political Representation in Romania
Autor/in:
Petrescu, Alexandra
Quelle: European Quarterly of Political Attitudes and Mentalities, 2 (2013) 2, S 1-8
Inhalt: Taking into account the influence of mentalities and attitudes on the construction of the political imaginary, the author is questioning the possibility if the parity or the quotas can become in the future a source of inspiration for the political representation of women in Romania. This essay analyses two francophone models, France and Belgium, where the quotas and parity are applied, and which represented during the last two centuries sources of inspiration for the electoral and constitutional framework of Romania.
Ecofeminist Ideology of Petra Kelly: The Challenges of Modern Political Thought
Autor/in:
Nadić, Darko
Quelle: European Quarterly of Political Attitudes and Mentalities, 2 (2013) 2, S 63-70
Inhalt: Petra Kelly (1947-1992) has remained recorded in history as one of the true icons of modern German and European environmental movement. Combining the ideas of feminism, peace, nonviolence, ecology (environmental protection) and social justice, she has managed to reconcile these seemingly opposing ideas and merge them into one specific type of ideology that was the guiding idea of the German Green Party until the mid-nineties of the last century. This is not the case of an eclectic kind of ideology, the simple merging of ideas into a single functional unit policy, but of an ideology that is based on the notion that the nuclear age, political, social, gender, class and other differences are something that inhibits humanity in its real progress. At the same time, Petra Kelly has shown that true feminism is not necessarily something that is obscure or something that is politically incorrect. Modern feminism, as it was propagated by Petra Kelly, in compliance with environmental political idea, the idea of peace, nonviolence, anti-nuclear policy and the idea of direct democracy, represents an ideology that, by its political radicalism and its strong criticism of the capitalist society, stands side by side with ecologism. "Cassandra of the nuclear apocalypse", "The Ulrike Meinhof of the eighties", in spite of all her accomplishments for the formation of the German Greens, unfortunately, remained forgotten in the political thought and political practice of the party

Ethnic identity, informal institutions, and the failure to elect women in Indigenous Southern Mexico

Autor/in:
Danielson, Michael Stephen; Eisenstadt, Todd Alan; Yelle, Jennifer
Quelle: Journal of Politics in Latin America, 5 (2013) 3, S 3-33
Inhalt: "This article argues that the low levels of descriptive representation of women in local political office in Mexico and Latin America is much more than a problem of the purported patriarchal cultures of indigenous and rural communities. The authors claim, based on a comprehensive survey of 466 municipal governments in the indigenous state of Oaxaca, that the underrepresentation of women is a function of institutions limiting female candidates. They test this 'candidate supply' hypothesis, adapted from US-based studies, against the hypothesis that culture - as measured by indigenous ethnicity - has an independent effect on women's representation. They disconfirm that patriarchal, traditionalist cultures of indigenous communities cause underrepresentation in the election of women and instead find that a particular set of local institutions, which are more prevalent in indigenous municipalities, blocks the supply of potential women candidates. The authors conclude by considering the normative implications for women's representation in local politics in Mexico and Latin America." (author's abstract)

Child-raising, childbirth and abortion in extremis: women's stories of caring for and losing children during the violence of 1965-1966 in Indonesia
Titelübersetzung:Aufzucht von Kindern, Geburten und Abtreibung unter extremen Umständen: Erzählungen von Frauen über Pflege und Verlust von Kindern in den Gewaltjahren 1965/66 in Indonesien
Autor/in:
Pohlman, Annie
Quelle: Journal of Current Southeast Asian Affairs, 32 (2013) 3, S 93-114
Inhalt: "In this paper I examine women survivors' stories about childbirth and child-raising during the period of mass violence following Indonesia's 1965 coup, as well as some accounts of abortion during detention. The focus of my research is not on children's experiences per se but rather on women survivors' accounts about what happened to their children. I discuss various aspects of these experiences, including: being pregnant and giving birth; caring for children in and outside detention; the harm and abuse of children; losing children; and forced abortions. These stories reveal much about how women cared for and lost children as well as about what happened to children during the violence of 1965. I argue that examining these experiences must therefore also be central to understanding how women and their children survived and coped with the mass violence of 1965-1966. I also argue that these stories of caring for children, as well as of how children were harmed or lost, were fundamental parts of many women's testimonies." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Recent social gerontology and sociological research suggest that not only personal factors but also the socio-spatial context is assumed to be a factor in explaining quality of life. Together they make up the objective action context for subjective perceptions and evaluations of an individual, which are relevant for behavior. Using survey data from 2010 with 593 older women living at home (60+), the social and spatial aspects are considered as explanatory variables for the subjective quality of life. The analysis shows: subjective life quality of older women depends largely on the perception of safety, social embeddedness and their health status. While quality of life can mainly be explained by socio-spatial aspects of the community or neighborhood, feelings of insecurity depend on the size of the community, the extent of social activities (participation) and are also common among vulnerable groups of older people with low education and health." Identifying the barriers to women's agency in domestic violence: the tensions between women's personal experiences and systemic responses
Autor/in:
Aldridge, Jo
Quelle: Social Inclusion, 1 (2013) 1, S 3-12
Inhalt: Despite advances in knowledge and understanding about the impacts of domestic violence on women's lives, global research on violence against women shows there is a need for research that not only places women centre stage in research praxis, but also that involves them more collaboratively in genuine dialogue about their experiences, including their agentic stances. This is especially the case for marginalised and socially excluded women victims of domestic violence, such as those who are not known or do not present to services and who survive abusive relationships alone or with little outside support. Evidence from two studies reported here-secondary analysis of women with severe and enduring mental health problems and a collaborative narrative project with unsupported women victims of domestic violence-suggest that women's capacity for agency are compromised by a number of critical factors, and that these are also reflected in the tensions between micro-macro analyses and understanding of the impact of domestic violence on women. This article considers the barriers to women's agency from the women's perspective and in the context of broader, systemic dynamics, including the denial or obscuring of abuse by governments and states and the consequences of stringent fiscal retrenchment that put women at increased risk of domestic violence.
