Inhalt: How does gender affect discourse processes, particularly regarding the coverage of family issues? In order to explore this question, we focus on media representations of women in their roles as mothers on the one hand and journalists on the other and we compare the reporting of male and female journalists covering families. We refer to gender theory to examine processes of gender construction by different actors in the media and we draw on journalism theory to explain different reporting styles and strategies by male and female authors regarding discourse strategies, framing, and gender-stereotyping. Our methodological approaches include quantitative and qualitative content analyses and 14 semi-structured interviews with journalists, family researchers, and lobbyists. The sample includes coverage of families in general and that of large families in particular in German print media in the years 2011 and 2012, for a total of 1,100 texts. One of the key findings, not surprisingly, is that most of the journalists reporting on families are female. Similar to male journalists, however, they focus on the traditional family type despite the fact that various alternative forms of family life are now a social reality.
Titelübersetzung:Tabooed Masculinities: the Public Discourse on Homosexuality in the German Football Bundesliga

Sabisch, Katja
Quelle: Soziale Probleme, 25 (2014) 1, S 52-74
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The critical discourse studies the rote of the public debate on 'homosexuality and football' in Germany. The analysis is based on the fact that the football dispositive is male-centred. Furthermore the football dispositive taboos male homosexuality through certain discourses and practices. From the point of view of a sociology of gender it was discovered that the constant medial 'request for an outing' equates a 'request for order': homosexual football players are expected to confess their sexual orientation in order to be identified and alienated." Chemiker machen Karriere. Und Chemikerinnen? : Eine Annäherung an die Karrierebilder im Fachdiskurs der Chemie
Titelübersetzung:Male chemists get ahead. And female chemists? : Approaching career images in the chemical discourse
Autor/in:
Pascher-Kirsch, Ute; Jansen, Katrin
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article aims to analyze a specific discourse on the careers of female and male chemists in the journal Nachrichten aus der Chemie. The article is based on the assumption that the scientific culture in the field of chemistry frames these careers. Are chemists' careers presented in a gender-sensitive way? And if so, how does this presentation differ? Based on content analyses of the Nachrichten, the study shows that the chemists' careers follow a multi-annual development process which is determined by a chronology of identified career steps. These generally go hand in hand with an increase in prestige or status in the community. A key characteristic of a successful career in chemistry is having to overcome difficulties at every stage in one's career. In conclusion, it is apparent that (1) the careers of male and female chemists follow a career path which is full of obstacles and apparently leaves no space for a private life, without regard to sex and gender roles; (2) female chemists do climb the career ladder, but these women are presented as male/ masculine chemists. (3) The journal does not generally refer to sex and gender; where gender does play a role, it is presented as an obstacle which women have to overcome." (author's abstract)
Titelübersetzung:Equality through individual solutions? : Company level consequences of the economic benefitdiscourse in current gender equality policy in Switzerland
Autor/in:
Lanfranconi, Lucia Marina
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article discusses mechanisms that foster gender-specific(in)equality within work organisations. The special focus here is on the interaction between intra-company perceptions and the dominant discourse in current Swiss equality policy (economic benefit discourse). The article discursively analyses documents, interviews and statistics from a medium-sized industrial company that participated in a typical gender equality project. Results indicate both possibilities for reducing and risks of stabilising gender-specific inequalities. Of particular relevance is the way in which leadership positions and part-time work are perceived. Through interacting with noncompulsory and individual solutions, legitimised by the economic benefit discourse, these perceptions can counterproductively lead to the stabilisation of gender inequalities." Meanings and motives before measures: the "what" and "why" of diversity within the mossos d'esquadra and the politie Utrecht
Autor/in:
Ewijk, Anne R. van
Quelle: Social Inclusion, 2 (2014) 3, S 60-74
Inhalt: This article proposes the definition of and motivation for diversity (policy) as an important research topic that should be studied before focusing on diversity policy measures. As such, it strives to demonstrate the academic potential of an analytical framework that outlines fundamental choices made in these respects. What types of diversity do organizations focus on? And what do they want to achieve with (increased) diversity? In this article the discourses underlying the diversity policies in two regional European police forces -the Mossos d'Esquadra and the Politie Utrecht- are analyzed. The main observation is that the results are surprisingly similar in spite of contextual factors that may lead observers to expect otherwise: they both focus on gender and migrant background, identifying these types of diversity as collective in nature, while striving for equal opportunities for individuals despite these collective differences. This article also explores possibilities for further theory building by formulating possible explanations for the similarities and differences which have been identified, suggesting a possible hierarchy in diversity within European organizations, and describing how the motivation for diversity might influence the effectiveness of diversity policies.
Was bleibt?

Autor/in:
Koch, Ulrike; Zschokke, Anna
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Every day new blog posts, tweets, images, and videos appear, which take on social issues, discuss them from a (queer-)feminist viewpoint and initiate debates within (queer-)feminism. The resulting digital knowledge makes the lively discussions within the (queer-)feminist scene visible and cannot be separated from that scene anymore. However, most (queer-)feminist digital content is currently not recorded for posterity and thus at risk of disappearance and oblivion. Therefore the question of a (queer-)feminist meta-archive is posed by the authors, more precisely an archive which records digital content and makes it accessible to persons interested. This article presents a semi-utopian concept of how to organize and establish a meta-archive that could serve varying needs." (author's abstract)
Öffentlichkeiten im Internet: zwischen Feminismus und Antifeminismus
Titelübersetzung:Publics and the web: between feminism and antifeminism
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The concept of a public sphere ("Öffentlichkeit") has been of central concern to Gender Studies. Alongside the feminist critique of dominance changes of media and communication technologies have led to a reconsideration of the concept. Taking the Three-Layer-Model of the public sphere as the starting-point Ricarda Drüeke and Elisabeth Klaus examine how publics are constituted in the Internet, discuss the consequences for their formation and ponder their meaning for the processes of social debate and cultural understanding. The authors explore the prominent German antisexist twitter-debate #aufschrei as an example for alternative forms of political debates on the Internet and their potential for the formation of feminist counter-publics. However, #aufschrei was denounced on masculinist and antifeminist sites, thereby demonstrating the limits, problems, and risks of these new forums of communication. The empirically grounded analysis shows that antisexist and feminist positions remain contested in the process of public debate and cultural understanding, so that Internet publics are ambivalent as regards their potential to foster social change." Safe Spaces, Self-Care and Empowerment - Netzfeminismus im Sicherheitsdispositiv
Titelübersetzung:Safe spaces, self-care and empowerment - web feminism and the dispositif of security
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "During the last decades, security has turned into a contested and ambiguous leitmotif of western societies in the 21st century. Feminist net activist’s debates have also concentrated on security discourses, albeit with a somewhat different focal point: Feminist blogs as well as feminist conferences often focused on the creation of so called safe(r) spaces. Parallel, empowerment and self-care are discussed as important strategies to brace oneself for online abuse and harassment. The author analyzes if and how far these debates predominantly argue within the logic of the dispositifs of security, gouvernmentality and dynamics of precarization. What would it mean for feminist movements if current feminist debates largely reproduced mechanisms of governing and lost sight of 'the art of not being governed like that' (Foucault 1992)." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Sociological research has so far largely underestimated the potential of film analysis as a means of analyzing societal change. The findings presented in this article are part of current efforts to establish a visual sociology, and specifically a sociology of film. Based on a research project on the cultural foundations of the family and gender order, the article is centered on the potential contribution of film analysis for sociological enquiry. For this purpose, it introduces research on the films Das doppelte Lottchen ('Two Times Lotte', 1950, director: Josef von Baky) and its remake Charlie und Louise. Das doppelte Lottchen (1994, director: Joseph Vilsmaier). Both movies are understood as 'discursive events' within broader public discourses. The author's methodology draws on a sociology of knowledge approach to discourse analysis and takes it further by applying audio-visual methods. Documentary video analysis serves as a particularly important toolkit. The article examines the interpretative options with respect to different ways of private life that these movies discursively offer. Both films deny the widely observed social developments towards a pluralization of ways of private life and support an ideal image of the nuclear family. In the 1950 film, the parents' divorce is considered unacceptable, whereas the 1994 remake takes the separation as the starting point of its narration. This discursive transformation can be interpreted as an institutionalization and normalization of separation and divorce. However, the general cultural principle of an intact and harmonious family is not challenged, but rather discursively updated, affirmed and reproduced." (author's abstract)
