Inhalt: "This article explains and illustrates the method of family histories, reconstructed from crossed biographical interviews of different members of the same family. This methodology allows for the collection of fine and precious data in order to try to understand the complexity of the dynamics of intergenerational transmissions and the construction of national affiliations of immigrants' descendants. It shows how continuously shifting family relationships underlie creativity in parenting strategies. In addition, this approach can circumvent some specific barriers to the study of immigrant families, who often speak uneasily with researchers. Intergenerational transmission of trajectories of suffering in precarious environments: researching the younger generations' strategies of reinterpretation

Inhalt: "This article discusses some pivotal questions regarding processes of the intergenerational transmission of trajectories of suffering in precarious places: to what extent can such processes provide resources that foster agency, and to what extent do they rather constitute barriers to living one's own life? How much do intergenerational relations allow for certain reinterpretations while discouraging or inhibiting others? Which reinterpretations of the older generations' experiences appear legitimate in certain contexts, and which are rebuked by one's social environment? In order to pursue these questions we present analyses of two very different cases that are based on two forms of data material - the life story of Emma, a woman in her 50s, and ethno-analytic group interviews with adolescents aged 14 to 20. Both cases are embedded in very different regional and political contexts: the former, in the French system of fostering institutions, and the latter a Palestinian refugee camp in the West Bank. Both constitute, however, cases of intergenerational transmission of trajectories of suffering. One objective of this article is to illustrate how the contrasting of such cases across different kinds of data and contexts can be heuristically useful for methodologically gauging the spectrum of the ubiquitous and sometimes paradoxical phenomena of intergenerational transmission, in order to further develop its conceptualization." The effectiveness of the item count technique in eliciting valid answers to sensitive questions: an evaluation in the context of self-reported delinquency

Inhalt: "Surveys often contain sensitive questions, that is, questions about private, illegal, or socially undesirable behavior. When asked directly in standard survey modes, respondents tend to underreport these behaviors, yielding biased results. One method that promises more valid estimates than direct questioning (DQ) is the item count technique (ICT). In this paper, methodological benefits and disadvantages of the ICT, as compared to DQ, are empirically evaluated with regard to questions on self-reported delinquency. We present findings from a face-to-face survey of 552 respondents who had been convicted under criminal law prior to the survey. The results show that, first, subjective measures of survey quality such as trust in anonymity or willingness to respond are not affected positively by the ICT with the exception that interviewers feel less uncomfortable asking sensitive questions in ICT mode than in DQ mode. Second, all prevalence estimates of self-reported delinquent behaviors are significantly higher in ICT than in DQ mode. Third, a regression model on determinants of response behavior indicates that the effect of the ICT on response validity varies by gender. All in all, our results are in favor of the ICT. This technique is a promising alternative to other special questioning techniques such as the much more complicated randomized response technique (RRT)." (author's abstract)
Age and sex effects in anchoring vignette studies: methodological and empirical contributions

Inhalt: "Anchoring vignettes are an increasingly popular tool for identifying and correcting for group differences in use of subjective ordered response categories. However, existing techniques to maximize response consistency (use of the same standards for self-ratings as for vignette-ratings), which center on matching vignette characters' demographic characteristics to respondents' own characteristics, appear at times to be ineffective or to pose interpretive difficulties. Specifically, respondents often appear to neglect instructions to treat vignette characters as age peers. Furthermore, when vignette characters' sex is matched to respondents' sex, interpretation of sex differences in rating style is rendered problematic. This study applies two experimental manipulations to a national American sample (n=1,765) to clarify best practices for enhancing response consistency. First, an analysis of two methods of highlighting vignette characters' age suggests that both yield better response consistency than previous, less prominent means. Second, a comparison of ratings of same- and opposite-sex vignette characters suggests that, with avoidable exceptions, the sex of the respondent rather than of the vignette character drives observed sex differences in rating style. Implications for interpretation and design of anchoring vignette studies are discussed. Findings also show significant sex, educational, and racial/ethnic differences in styles of rating health, and racial/ethnic differences in styles of rating political efficacy. These findings underscore the incomparability of unadjusted subjective self-ratings across demographic groups." (publisher's description)

Inhalt: "Biografien helfen nachzuvollziehen, in welcher Weise Identität - insbesondere zwischen Mitgliedern multikultureller und multiethnischer Gesellschaften - konstruiert wird. In diesem Beitrag werden die Lebensgeschichten von sechs Frauen vorgestellt, die im Be'er Sheva-Gebiet in Israel leben, aber drei unterschiedlichen kulturellen Gruppen zugehören. Die Analyse stützt sich auf Bar-Ons (2005) Theorie der Identitätskonstruktion, in deren Fokus die Beziehungen zwischen 'internalen' und 'externalen Anderen' stehen. Im Besonderen interessierte uns der Zusammenhang zwischen Bildungsgeschichte und der Beziehung zu 'internalen' bzw. 'externalen Anderen' im Lebenslauf der befragten Frauen. Unsere Ergebnisse legen nahe, Erziehung und Bildung als eine Art Hintergrundfolie zu verstehen, auf der 'das Selbst' und 'die Anderen' als eher nahe oder entfernt im Sinne der jeweiligen Identitätskonstruktion platziert werden. Zusätzlich fanden wir Hinweise, die wir in dem Konzept der 'kulturellen Distanz von internalen Anderen' zusammenfassten, für das Bildungsaspirationen und Berufswege eine wichtige moderierende Rolle spielen und das eine Ausweitung der Theorie Bar-Ons bedeutet. Inhalt: "Life stories make it possible to trace the manner in which identity construction takes place, especially amongst members of multicultural and multiethnic societies. The life stories of six women belonging to three different groups, all residents of the Be'er Sheva area in Israel, were analyzed by applying and extending Bar-On's (2005) theory of identity construction which focuses upon the relations with the 'internal other' and the 'external other'. Specifically, we investigated the intersection between education and relations with others as factors shaping identity during the women's various life courses. Results suggest that education serves as a mapping tool which places the 'self' and the 'other' as either close or distant in terms of identity construction. Moreover, findings point to the existence of a 'cultural distance from the internal others' (CDIO) as shaped by educational aspirations and achievements. Building upon Bar-On's theory and the concept of CDIO, psychosocial applications and future directions for research are discussed." (author's abstract)

Die vorliegende Analyse reiht sich in die aktuellen Bemühungen ein, eine visuelle Soziologie, einschließlich einer Filmsoziologie zu etablieren. Anhand der Ergebnisse eines Forschungsprojektes zur kulturellen Fundierung der Familien- und Geschlechterordnung wird diskutiert, welchen Beitrag Spielfilmanalysen für die soziologische Forschung leisten können. Dafür wird eine Analyse der Filme 'Das doppelte Lottchen' (1950, Regie: Josef v. Baky) und einer seiner Remakes 'Charlie und Louise. Das doppelte Lottchen' (1994, Regie: Joseph Vilsmaier) vorgestellt. Die Spielfilme werden als 'diskursive Ereignisse' in öffentlichen Diskursen verstanden. Die entwickelte Methode knüpft an die wissenssoziologische Diskursanalyse (WDA) an und erweitert sie um audiovisuelle Methoden, insbesondere dient die dokumentarische Videoanalyse als 'Werkzeugkasten'. Herausgearbeitet wird, welche diskursiven Deutungsangebote die Filme dem Publikum hinsichtlich der Lebensform anbieten: Trotz Pluralisierung der Lebensformen konstruieren beide Filme die vollständige Kernfamilie als Ideal und schreiben damit die kulturelle Leitidee einer vermeintlich universellen und vollständigen Eltern-Kind-Familie fort. Die Scheidung der Eltern wird im 1950er-Jahre-Film tabuisiert, im 1990er-Jahre-Film fungiert sie hingegen als Ausgangspunkt der filmischen Erzählung. In dieser Hinsicht lassen sich diskursive Verschiebungen hin zu einer Institutionalisierung und Normalisierung von Trennung und Scheidung aufzeigen, die kulturelle Leitidee der intakten und harmonischen Kernfamilie wird jedoch nicht hinterfragt, sondern im Diskurs aktualisiert." Inhalt: "Sociological research has so far largely underestimated the potential of film analysis as a means of analyzing societal change. The findings presented in this article are part of current efforts to establish a visual sociology, and specifically a sociology of film. Based on a research project on the cultural foundations of the family and gender order, the article is centered on the potential contribution of film analysis for sociological enquiry. For this purpose, it introduces research on the films Das doppelte Lottchen ('Two Times Lotte', 1950, director: Josef von Baky) and its remake Charlie und Louise. Das doppelte Lottchen (1994, director: Joseph Vilsmaier). Both movies are understood as 'discursive events' within broader public discourses. The author's methodology draws on a sociology of knowledge approach to discourse analysis and takes it further by applying audio-visual methods. Documentary video analysis serves as a particularly important toolkit. The article examines the interpretative options with respect to different ways of private life that these movies discursively offer. Both films deny the widely observed social developments towards a pluralization of ways of private life and support an ideal image of the nuclear family. In the 1950 film, the parents' divorce is considered unacceptable, whereas the 1994 remake takes the separation as the starting point of its narration. This discursive transformation can be interpreted as an institutionalization and normalization of separation and divorce. However, the general cultural principle of an intact and harmonious family is not challenged, but rather discursively updated, affirmed and reproduced." (author's abstract)

The impact of method bias on the cross-cultural comparability in face-to-face surveys among ethnic minorities

Inhalt: "This article investigates the impact of several sources of method bias on the cross-cultural comparison of attitudes towards gender roles and family ties among non-Western minority ethnic groups. In particular, it investigates how interviewer effects, the use of an interviewer with a shared ethnic background, interview language, interviewer gender, gender matching, the presence of others during the interview and differences in socio-demographic sample composition of non-Western minority ethnic groups affect the cross-cultural comparison of attitudes towards gender roles and family ties between these groups. The data used in this study come from a large scale face-to face survey conducted among the four largest non-Western minority ethnic groups in The Netherlands for which Statistics Netherlands drew a random sample of named individuals from each of the four largest non-Western minority populations living in The Netherlands. Furthermore, methods are introduced to estimate the potential impact of method bias on cross cultural comparisons. The results show that measurement of both gender roles and family ties constructs are full scalar invariant across the different ethnic groups, but that observed differences in attitudes between ethnic groups especially towards gender roles are influenced by method bias. This in turn leads to biased comparisons between ethnic groups because of differences in the size of the various sources of method bias, the differential impact of the same method bias between ethnic groups and the combination thereof."
