Inhalt: Far from accomplishing its utopian plans of transforming society, communism did not turn gender equality into a reality either. This paper moves beyond the common-place approaches that simply underline the failures of this political system and presumes that women experienced communism in very diverse and often ambiguous ways, for public and private roles conflicted more often than not. From among the few individuals who dared to articulate critical thoughts on Romanian communism prior to its collapse of 1989, the present paper recuperates the experience of three women. Members of the urban educated elite, they believed nonetheless in different values and pursued different strategies of expressing discontent with the regime. These female critics of the communist system went beyond personal or group interests, but among the issues of public concern they raised none belonged to a feminist agenda. Yet, these women acted as if gender equality was a reality in Ceauşescu’s Romania: they considered themselves the equal partners of like-minded men, while their male peers accepted them as such, for equalitarian perceptions of genders shaped the public roles assumed by non-conformist Romanian intellectuals. The example of these three women does not prove that communism succeeded in redefining the status of women, but it illustrates how the urban educated social group experienced gender relations then. No feminists in thinking, these three women were so in their behavior. Their criticism of Ceauşescu’s communism was genderless, but it nonetheless strengthened the idea that women are no less than men.

Inhalt: "In recent years, female marriage migration from China and Southeast Asia has significantly increased the number of foreign-born citizens in Taiwan. This article is a preliminary investigation into how political parties responded to the growing multicultural makeup of the national community between 2000 and 2012. We examine the content of the Understanding Taiwan textbook, the election publicity of the two major political parties, citizenship legislation, and the results of interviewing immigrant women. The findings show that the change in the ruling party did make differences in terms of both parties' projection of immigrant women in election propaganda and citizenship legislation. However, inward-looking multiculturalism is practised by the two main political parties in Taiwan to forge national identity and enhance national cohesion rather than to promote the recognition of immigrants' different cultural heritage." (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In 2013, the federal parliament, along with four state parliaments, was elected in Austria. While the specific conditions varied, the elections saw also the successful rise of newly emerging parties, first of all of the Team Stronach. The article presents some empirical findings on voting behaviour, motives and voter transitions and tries to give an overview on possible success-factors for new parties. The data show quite different party choices between men and women as a manifestation of a gender gap and between younger and older voters as a generation gap again. Team Stronach benefitted especially from former FPÖ-/ BZÖ-voters and from the support of (younger)men." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "In 2009 at the latest there appeared a new type of Islamist militants originating from the Federal Republic: increasingly, young men and women with or without a migration background, who had been born and raised in Germany, decided to join foreign terrorist organisations to, by their orders, carry out militant actions or terrorist attacks against the West and Germany. From Hamburg, Berlin, Bonn and other German cities and regions the 'Jihad Caravan' went to Waziristan or Syria where a number of German converts, Turks, Afghans and Arabs, had joined groups such as Al Qaida (AQ), 'Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan' (IBU) and 'Islamic Jihad Union' (11U). The contribution sketches the lines of development of German jihad against the background of conflicts both in Germany and in foreign countries." (author's abstract)

Gleichstellungspolitischer Wandel durch Engagement und Handeln der Frauenorganisationen: Kroatien auf dem Weg zur Gleichstellung

Autor/in:
Rosul-Gajic, Jagoda
Inhalt: "The article deals with the question of how the Croatian women's organizations have contributed to gender policy in Croatia and what instruments they have used at the state level in the process of drafting, initiation and adoption of innovative gender policy. The article argues that in their role as norm advocates the Croatian women's NGOs have been working with a double strategy to call attention to non-compliance with international norms on women's rights and to enforce change. Unlike most of the literature on global norm diffusion, this article argues that, in order to act gender sensible, not only the national actors need to be socialized, but also the international political elite."
Autor/in:
Tanczer, Leonie Maria
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article analyses the discursive constructions of Post-Gender in the Pirate Party of Austria (PPÖ). On internal discussion forums and in working groups Post-Gender is regularly discussed as the party's' approach to women centric and gender topics. For the Pirate Party, the term represents a gender-neutral social order and the overcoming of heteronormativity. However, the party is frequently criticised for this attitude and accused of masculinism, their nominal representation of women and sexism. Due to this contradiction, the current qualitative study wants to investigate the usage and meaning of Post-Gender. Thirteen interviews with current and previous party members were conducted between April and June 2012. They were analysed using Discursive Psychology. The results show that the PPÖ constructs Post-Gender as an Egalitarian Discourse with a justification function. They used discursive strategies which legitimise the existence of an egalitarian society free of gender differences but also enable the further negation of gender discrimination, the rejection of feminism and the opposition to the promotion of women." Ungleiche Schwestern: FrauenAktivismus und Frauenbewegungen im Post-Mubarak Ägypten
Titelübersetzung:Unequal sisters: women's activism and women's movements in Post-Mubarak Egypt
Autor/in:
Kreile, Renate
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Hundreds of thousands of women, across social, generational and ideological boundaries, participated in the uprising protest against the Mubarak regime in Egypt, demanding bread, freedom and dignity. Only a small minority explicitly voiced strategic gender interests. Acknowledging these findings and inspired by insights of the Social Movement Theory, the article analyses various actors of Egypt's women's movements regarding their interests, strategies and appeal as well as transnational influences and linkages. In particular it focuses on the question, why women in large numbers actively support Islamist movements that seem detrimental to their own interests and agendas. The article reveals that the dynamics of transformation after Mubarak’s fall have not only dramatically polarized the Egyptian society, but have also deeply divided the women's movement. Women activists, supporting an inclusive democracy and women's rights, see themselves widely marginalized, both socially and politically." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Movement among comrades: approchement between social democrats and feminists
Autor/in:
Amlinger, Fabienne
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Only in 1971, Swiss women received political citizenship rights. At that time, feminists from the women's liberation movement had been actively involved in non-parliamentary politics for several years. With the right to vote and the right for election, however, their field of political action was expanded fundamentally. But among powerful parties only the Social Democrats SPS appealed to activists. Thus, by the end of the 1970s, some of the activists joined the party. This article examines how feminists were included into the SPS - a party whose structures were completely different from the non-hierarchical women’s liberation movement, whose comrades often turned out to be 'red patriarchs' and where gender issues were always treated as side contradictions. Were the feminists able to put emphasis on changes regarding content, program and structures of the party Did the SPS only incorporate them for the purpose of own interests? Did the feminists eventually turn their back on the party disappointedly?" (author's abstract)

Inhalt: After some introductory remarks, this article gives a brief overview on contem-porary terrorism research in the political and social sciences. Then, the important contributions historical studies have made to enhance the academic knowledge about terrorism are sketched. The third part provides an overview which not only critically discusses the state of research on gendered aspects of terrorism but also demonstrates the stimulating insights gained by employing a historical perspective in this field. In the fourth chapter, the authors outline some promising topics of future terrorism research which all can be studied from gender sensitive historical perspectives. Finally the results of the contributions put together for this HSR Special Issue are summarized.
