Representation of women in the news: balancing between career and family life

Inhalt: An in-depth literature review showed that women, despite their increasingly prominent roles worldwide, continue to be persistently underrepresented and stereotyped in news media. This study aimed to investigate the extent to which the representation of women changed over time in two Dutch-speaking Belgian newspapers De Standaard and Het Laatste Nieuws. An automated quantitative content analysis revealed that there is no increase of the number of women in the newspapers between 2005 and 2015. On the contrary, women are significantly less represented over time in the popular newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws. A qualitative analysis on two cases about women stepping into a leadership position -in 2012 (Catherine De Bolle as head of the Federal police) and in 2014 (Dominique Leroy as CEO of a Belgian telecom company)- showed that the press emphasised their femininity, their being a role model for other women, their being part of a family and having certain looks. Moreover, these women are clearly portrayed as "the best candidate" pointing at the selection procedures and their capabilities to perform professionally. Probably, this strong emphasis is a way of justifying that these women are not selected because of positive discrimination. Further analysis of cases of both men and women stepping into top positions across countries and media platforms is recommended.

Inhalt: How do local labour market structures, in tandem with workforce dispositions and attitudes, influence the way multinational companies localise their standardised work and production systems? This article investigates the conflict-ridden factory regime of a lean automotive plant in provincial Russia at which the management was able to secure a relatively high level of consent among its female workers but not among male workers. In order to explain this gendered pattern of worker consent, the plant-internal gender division of labour and two societal factors proved crucial: the gendered segmentation of the local labour market and the workers' cultural dispositions. At the same time, the analysis points to the transformative effect that the company’s work and production system had on the local labour regime. The case study relies on a combination of quantitative survey data and qualitative interviews. It emphasises the need to reconnect the analysis of branch-plant factory regimes to a nuanced understanding of their embeddedness within local labour markets - also in the case of highly standardised work and production systems.

There is no discrimination between girls and boys!

Inhalt: This paper refers to a selected fragmant, which is about children’s gendered behaviours and children’s thoughts on gender issue, of an ethnographic study on children’s subjectivitation processes through digital technologies. For this whole study, philosophy for children approach was used as a technique to conduct focus group interviews with children in a periodical basis. The selected parts for this paper are based on three different sections of those interviews; first one is about children’s opinions on gender roles, referring to gendered occupations and plays for kids, the second one is also conducted to reveal the hidden discourses on gender in real society and virtual world which has been built on the existed world, and lastly adult-children hierarchical relations, was debated with children in order to connect this distinction to gender differences, will be mentioned.

Inhalt: Anlass unseres Beitrags ist die Beobachtung, dass sich in aktuellen feministischen Debatten - insbesondere im Kontext der Nachhaltigkeitswissenschaften - vermehrt auf 'Care' als Denk- und Handlungsprinzip bezogen wird. Damit wird 'Care' (auch) auf die Kategorie Natur erweitert. Wir gehen davon aus, dass eine solche Erweiterung die Komplexität und Wirkmächtigkeit gesellschaftlicher Natur- und Geschlechterverhältnisse vernachlässigt. Eine Folge könnte die Übertragung macht- und herrschaftsförmiger Momente von Sorgebeziehungen auf den Umgang mit nichtmenschlichen 'Natur/en' sein. Wir begeben uns auf eine Spurensuche, die über die Auseinandersetzung mit 'Natur' als immanenter Kategorie von (Care-)Debatten der Neuen Frauen- und Ökologiebewegung der 1970er-Jahre bis hin zu einer Untersuchung ausgewählter Arbeiten zu 'Natur' als expliziter Kategorie in 'Care'-Beziehungen zwischen Menschen und nichtmenschlichen 'Natur/en' führt. Der Beitrag richtet sich explizit gegen die Tendenz der Essentialisierung von 'Natur' und 'Geschlecht'. Stattdessen plädieren wir für eine nachhaltige Nutzung von 'Natur/en' in vorsorgender Perspektive.
