Inhalt: "This study investigated gender differences in job satisfaction following the first
term of a cooperative education program in engineering. Using data from a survey of
freshmen, this study tested hypotheses about gender differences in the co-op job experience
and the correlates of co-op job satisfaction. Gender-based predictive models of job
satisfaction are presented. In general, the correlates of co-op job satisfaction are
the same as those identified in past studies of job satisfaction. The level of co-op
job satisfaction is the same for men and women, even though women do face some disadvantages.
Social influences are important to both men and women, but there are gender differences

The effect of World War II on women in engineering

Inhalt: "The field of engineering has been one of the most difficult for women to enter. Even
with an increase in the proportion of women in the engineering workforce from 0.3%
before the 1970s to 9.5% in 1999, women are still seriously underrepresented. This
article examines the history of women in engineering in the United States during World
War II. Women were actively recruited as engineering aides by the federal government,
which saw them as a temporary substitute for men who were in the military. Yet this
crisis did not break down the barriers to and prejudices against women in engineering,
nor did it give them a real opportunity to become professional engineers equal to
men. After the war, calls for a return to normalcy were used to reestablish social
norms, which kept women at home and reserved desirable places in the workforce, including

Inhalt: "The first mechanical engineering program for women at the Technical College (Fachhochschule) Stralsund in East Germany was established during the winter semester 2000/01. It is a model program in business engineering that started with 25 young women. The author describes the reasons for the establishment of this program and explains the major changes that were made in the curriculum of the engineering program. Against this background the author describes the first results of a study addressing the expectations of the students regarding the subjects, the forms of teaching and learning as well as the conduct of the male and female professors in this model course of study in business engineering." Image problems deplete the number of women in academic applicant pools

Inhalt: "Despite near numeric parity in graduate schools, women and men in science and mathematics may not perceive the same opportunities for career success. Instead, female doctoral students' career ambitions may often be influenced by perceptions of irreconcilable conflicts between personal and academic goals. This article reports the results of a career goals survey of math and science doctoral students at the University of California, Davis. Fewer women than men began their doctoral programs seeking academic research careers. Of those who initially favored academic research, twice as many women as men downgraded these ambitions during graduate school. Women were more likely to feel geographically constrained by family ties and to express concern about balancing work and family, long work hours, and tenure clock inflexibility. These results partially explain why the percentage of women in academic applicant pools is often well below the number of Ph.D. recipients. The current barriers to gender equity thus cannot be completely ameliorated by increasing the number of women in the pipeline or by altered hiring practices, but changes must be undertaken to make academic research careers more flexible, family friendly, and attractive to women." Intending to stay : images of scientists, attitudes toward women, and gender as influences on persistence among science and engineering majors

Inhalt: "Contemporary research on gender and persistence in undergraduate education in science and engineering has routinely focused on why students leave their majors rather than asking why students stay. This study compared three common ways of measuring persistence-commitment to major, degree aspirations, and commitment to a science or engineering career-and emphasized factors that would encourage students to persist, including positive images of scientists and engineers, positive attitudes toward gender equity in science and engineering, and positive classroom experiences. A survey was administered in classrooms to a total of 285 female and male students enrolled in two required courses for majors. The results indicate that the different measures of persistence were sensitive to different influences but that students' gender did not interact with their images, attitudes, and experiences in predicted ways. The study concludes that an individual student's gender may be a more important factor in explaining why some female students leave their science and engineering majors than in explaining why others stay." Using ICT to improve the gender balance in engineering education

Inhalt: "This paper summarizes the activities, contents and overall outcomes of an international seminar organized jointly by two working groups of SEFI: the Working Group on Women in Engineering and the Working Group on Information and Communication Technologies. The seminar theme was 'Improving the gender balance in engineering education using ICT methods and contents' and was hosted by Oulu Polytechnic, Finland, 16-17 May 2002. In regard to ICT methods and contents, it is clear that the trend away from traditional teaching methods and a concentration on narrow technical contents is being replaced by a more holistic pedagogy that involves extensive use of ICT to provide both content and context of the material being learned by the student. The intrinsic advantages of ICT-based teaching are that it permits comprehensive use of resource-based learning, provides flexibility in learning and facilitates wide support for individual communication and networking. An account of women's progress in engineering : a social cognitive perspective

Inhalt: "Traditionally, women were not welcome in higher education, especially in male-dominated fields. Undoubtedly, women have dramatically increased their enrollments in many once male-only fields, such as law, medicine, and several of the sciences; nevertheless, engineering remains a field where women continue to be underrepresented. This has often been attributed to social barriers in engineering classrooms. However, a new turn of events has been reported: Young women entering engineering may receive higher grades and have a greater tendency to remain than men. To examine what has recently changed, the author applied Bandura's triadic model of reciprocity between environment, self, and behavior. The measured variables included academic integration or discrimination, self-measures of academic self-confidence, engineering self-efficacy, and behaviors taken to self-regulate learning: critical thinking, effort, peer learning, and help seeking. The data revealed that women apply slightly more effort and have slightly less self-efficacy than men. Their academic confidence is nearly equal in almost all areas. Most significantly, many previous gender biases appear diminished, and those that do exist are slight. However, it is recommended that continued efforts be undertaken to attract and retain women in engineering programs." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "This article explores the constructs of online community and online social support and discusses a naturalistic case study of a public, unmoderated, online discussion group dedicated to issues of interest to women in science and engineering. The benefits of affiliation with OURNET (a pseudonym) were explored through participant observation over a 4-year period, telephone interviews with 21 subscribers, and content analysis of e-mail messages posted to the discussion group during a 125-day period. The case study findings indicated that through affiliation with the online discussion group, women in traditionally male-dominated fields expanded their professional networks, increased their knowledge, constituted and validated positive social identities, bolstered their self-confidence, obtained social support and information from people with a wide range of experiences and areas of expertise, and, most significantly, found community."
