Gerhardt, Anke; Briede, Ulrike; Mues, Christopher
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article presents the main results of a survey of doctoral candidates in Germany organised by Thesis e. V., an association of doctoral candidates and doctorates. The study covers a wide range of themes, such as the motivation for taking up a doctorate, the funding of doctorates and the organisation of supervision. The study indicates that there is no standardised way of getting a doctorate. More precisely, the situation of doctoral candidates differs according to subject, type of doctorate and sex." Berning, Ewald; Falk, Susanne
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "As a result of recent debates on the adequate way of training young researchers, a number of weaknesses of the traditional German system have been stressed. In order to overcome these, it has been recommended to adopt the Anglo-American model of doctoral studies. The results of the study of the Bavarian State Institute for Higher Education Research indicate that the access to doctoral training is still dominated by the traditional model. Although doctoral studies gain importance, they are not regarded as a mutually exclusive alternative to the traditional German doctorate." (author's abstract)

Diversity-Management als Werkzeug der Kompetenzentwicklung in Betrieb und Studium
Titelübersetzung:Diversity-Management as a tool of education policy in factory and study
Autor/in:
Himmel, Swantje; Henning, Klaus
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In the United States, Diversity-Management is a well-known strategy for human resource management since the nineties. Nowadays it also finds a way to the Global Players in Europe and as well in Germany like Ford, Deutsche Bank, Telekom and Deutsche Bahn - and so does the scientific reflection. With the analysis of Diversity-Management as a useful tool to increase the intra-entreprise expertises and people skills, an actual discussion in the research-community has been started. The following article dares a new approach to the subject 'Diversity-Management', which is ever newer: the transfer of the operating mode of Diversity-Management to the academical education. Thus means a transfer from an economical sphere to the education policy. The application of Diversity-Management in the academical education is demonstrated by a case study at the RWTH Aachen University." (author's abstract)
Studienfachwahl : soziale Reproduktion oder fachkulturelle Entscheidung
Titelübersetzung:Choice of subject of study : social reproduction or special cultural decision
Autor/in:
Georg, Werner
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "On the background of the reproduction theory of Pierre Bourdieu this contribution analyzes the hierarchy of the fields of study in dependency of the social origin of the students between 1985 and 2004. Additionally the relative impact of the students' motivation on the choice of a field of study is surveyed. With data of the working group on university research (Konstanz) multinomial logit models are computed. It can be shown that there are significant effects of the social origin on the choice of a field of study. However, these effects are relatively week compared to the motivation." (author's abstract)
Titelübersetzung:Gender mainstreaming or managing diversity? : preferences of economics students as (potential) co-workers and executives
Autor/in:
Krell, Gertraude; Riegger, Kristina
Titelübersetzung:Tuition fees and admission to higher education : model USA?
Autor/in:
Hartmann, Michael
Inhalt: "In Germany, the supporters of tuition and fees refer to the USA as a model. There, in spite of high tuition and fees, much more children from families with a low socio-economic status, so it is said, can study than in Germany. The article demonstrates that this is only half of the truth. Most of the US-students with a low socio-economic background attend 2-years-colleges or colleges with a level of education considerably below the German level of university education. At the 150 highly selective universities and colleges which are comparable with the German universities, especially at the private elite universities, the social selectivity is much more severe. Only 10 percent of the students come from the lower half of the population. For the most part, the high tuition and fees are responsible for this. Therefore, the US higher education system is not the right model for university financing in Germany." (author's abstract)
The perceived importance of developmental relationships on women undergraduates pursuit of science
Autor/in:
Downing, Roberta A.; Crosby, Faye J.; Blake-Beard, Stacy
Quelle: Psychology of women quarterly : official journal of division 35 (psychology of women) of the American Psychological Association, Vol. 29 (2005) No. 4, S. 419-126
Inhalt: "Using a survey of women science majors, we tested the assumption that women mentors and other women guides help women students pursue the sciences. The survey explicitly distinguished among three types of guides: mentors (who provide psychosocial support), sponsors (who provide instrumental support), and role models (who act as examples) encountered before and during college. We found that over 90% of the women had a guide of one type or another, that mentors were most influential to women's pursuit of science, and that guides during college were more influential than guides prior to college. Participants reported having more female than male guides overall, but that some of the most influential guides were men." (author's abstract)

Internationaler Wissenschaftsstandort Deutschland? : Eckpunkte qualitativer Internationalisierung der Doktorandenausbildung am Beispiel des Modells "Internationales Doktorandenforum"
Titelübersetzung:A location of research? : key points of qualitative internationalisation of doctoral training by the example of the 'International Forum of Doctoral Candidates'
Autor/in:
Senger, Ulrike
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Whereas the aims of internationalising the research sector in Germany and attracting international junior academics are politically postulated, they are first of all measured in quantitative terms. The open question is how the integration of foreign junior academics in the German scientific environment can be supported and organised more effectively. One possibility of qualitative internationalisation lies in the institutionalisation of special modules, curricula and meeting opportunities for international doctoral candidates, as they are realised in the 'International Forum for Doctoral Candidates'. Based on the experiences gained within this forum, basis principles of qualitative internationalisation of doctoral training are extracted." (author's abstract)
Education staff and students under neoliberal pressure : a British-German comparison
Titelübersetzung:Lehrpersonal und Studenten unter dem Druck des Neoliberalismus : Deutschland und Großbritannien im Vergleich
Autor/in:
Pritchard, Rosalind
Quelle: Beiträge zur Hochschulforschung, Jg. 27 (2005) H. 4, S. 6-29
Inhalt: "This paper aims to compare the way in which neo-liberal trends are impacting on the attitudes and values of staff and students in the United Kingdom and Germany. Research is based upon qualitative and quantitative data from a dozen university institutions in each country, where individual interviews were conducted with staff, and questionnaires were completed both by them and by their students. In both countries many current trends are not deeply accepted or internalised by staff. There are startling differences in student satisfaction, perceived human relationships within the academe, as well as working conditions in the higher education sector. Though in many respects the same kind of re-structuring is taking place in each system, there is only partial convergence in attitudes and values between the German and British respondents in this study."
