Inhalt: In European public debates, Islam is often described as an impediment to gender equality. By using data from surveys conducted in Germany, we analyze the role of high levels of individual religiosity in explaining Turks' and Germans' approval of gender equality and the way Turkish and German couples share household tasks. Results suggest that for both groups, individuals with strong religious commitments are less likely than secular ones to hold egalitarian gender role attitudes. At the behavioral level, this correlation between religiosity and gender egalitarianism only holds true for Turkish respondents. Furthermore, strong religious commitments contribute to generational stability in attitudinal and behavioral gender-traditionalism among Turks. However, when explaining Germans' more egalitarian gender-related attitudes and behaviors, religiosity turns out to be just one factor among others – and not a particularly important one. Further research is needed to disentangle the different cultural and religious aspects of Muslim migrants’ attitudes and behaviors.

Inhalt: Historically, young women have been the object of social control, often in the name of filial honor. This article addresses a particular phenomenon of such social control as it is experienced by first- and second-generation female immigrants from Cuba and Haiti who are living in South Florida in the United States. This theme is explored by analyzing the life stories of six immigrants from these countries. The biographical stories of immigrant women reveal how social control operates in the context of transnationalism through controlling processes, internalization of gender expectations, and dominating discourse. It is also argued how social control manipulates and restricts female spaces and operates across spaces in a transnational manner from homelands to host nations. The main conclusion of the study is that a family's relocation to the United States for the purpose of political, social, or economic freedom does not necessarily result in liberation from restrictive social control for young women from such immigrant families. The "transnationality of social control" is therefore understood as the hegemonic domination of female bodies and behaviors through the mimesis of reified and remembered spaces of homelands in host societies.

Suicidal behavior of young immigrant women in The Netherlands: can we use Durkheim's concept of 'fatalistic suicide' to explain their high incidence of attempted suicide?

Inhalt: Young immigrant women of South Asian, Turkish and Moroccan origin in The Netherlands demonstrate disproportionate rates of non-fatal suicidal behavior. Suicidal behavior is usually explained from a psychological or medical tradition. However, we would like to emphasize sociological correlates, by examining the relevance of Durkheim's fatalistic suicide, characterized by overregulation. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 115 case files of young women who demonstrated suicidal behavior to illuminate their living conditions. The analysis included a comparison of class factors as well as psychiatric and psychological risk factors. In at least half of the cases South Asian, Turkish and Moroccan women experienced specific stressful life events related to their family honor. Women's lives were often characterized by a lack of self-autonomy. It is concluded that the archetype of fatalistic suicide should be re-evaluated when interpreting the suicidal behavior of young immigrant women in The Netherlands and incorporated in strategies of prevention.

Inhalt: "The conference 'Limits of the Welfare-State: Migration and Gender', was held on June 26, 2009, at the Ruhr-University of Bochum, and hosted by the Chair for Social Inequality and Gender (Professor Ilse Lenz) and the Heinrich-Böll-Foundation. It focused the distribution of life chances, procured by the education-system and the labour-marked in connection with the welfare-state and with special regards to the aspects of migration and gender as categories of complex social inequalities. Besides the further development of analytical approaches, a central goal of the contributions made by international scholars was to point out new political scopes for design." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'The aim of this paper is to show an example of a local integration project in the Tyrolean municipality of Telfs. How does a multicultural discourse contribute to the exclusion of women in the process of negotiating integration? Local municipalities, in trying to find new ways of ´living together liaise with migrant associations in order to get into contact with the local immigrant population. However, both actors often employ an essentialistview of culture that tends to naturalizehegemonic constructions of identity and finally leads to the reproduction of asymmetric structures of participation. Thus, integration projects may fail to address basic structural inequalities between social majorities and minorities. The focus of this paper is on women engaged in two Turkish Islamic associations in the Austrian Tyrolean municipality of Telfs. Discussing the example of a locally implemented integration project, it analyses how a multicultural discourse can serve to legitimate asymmetric participation structures within associations, as well as to reproduce them in the cooperation between migrant organizations and local municipalities.' Inhalt: Value conflicts involving gender equality are interwoven into current multicultural tensions in many European societies. They are at the core of these tensions in Sweden, in which gender equality and principles of individual human rights constitute the state profile and political identity. In this article, we focus on three cases of honor killings that became flash points for public debates on `culture and cultures' among political parties, immigrant groups and feminists in Sweden. The media fervor surrounding honour-related violence has provided xenophobic groups with political opportunities, but at the same time, the public debate has given visibility and opened up public space for immigrant women's groups. We conclude that the notion of the `good society' has kept at bay the recognition of overtly xenophobic parties, but it has also inhibited open dialogue across and within majority and minority cultures, which would allow for reflections upon the diversity within cultures, marked by religion, gender, class differences and generational conflicts.
A job with no boundaries: home eldercare work in Italy

Inhalt: In recent years a number of important studies have explored the new international division of reproductive labor, but those works have concentrated, for the most part, on one end of the life cycle: nannies and childcare. This article focuses on the other end of it, home eldercare work. Jobs falling under this label encompass a variety of work situations but the title suggests a job that is more homogeneous than the occupation actually is. This article explores, through the narratives of the workers and the exploration of this 24-hour job, what it means to work as a home eldercare assistant.

"My baby is my paper!": familiäre Bindungen nigerianischer Migrantinnen auf dem Weg nach Europa
Titelübersetzung:"My baby is my paper!": family ties of Nigerian female migrants on their way to Europe
Autor/in:
Kastner, Kristin
Quelle: Afrika Spectrum, 42 (2007) 2, S 251-273
Inhalt: "Many young Nigerian women's main reason for migrating to Europe lies in the desire to support their families back home in Nigeria. For those who travel to Europe overland it means being on the road for months or even several years. In this transitional stage, new relationships - often highly provisional - develop, and many migrants get pregnant. Although their (unborn) children are often not the result of relationships based on mutual consent nor planned, they nonetheless may play a crucial role in being able to continue the journey: These days they represent a kind of protection and 'papers' and, thereby, reduce the risk for their mothers of being deported. Being mostly single mothers, soon after reaching Europe the young women take on the role of double breadwinners: On the one hand, they have to provide for their children who were born on the road or in the country of destination, on the other hand, they have to support their families in Nigeria. In analyzing these new forms of family relationships that span from the country of origin to the transit country and the (provisional) destination country, the author also contributes to research on the dynamics of family structures in the context of migration." Migration experiences and changes of identity: the analysis of a narrative
Titelübersetzung:Migrationserfahrungen und Identitätsveränderungen: die Analyse einer Erzählung
Autor/in:
Kazmierska, Kaja
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 31 (2006) 3, S 72-89
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'This paper is based on the analysis of an autobiographical narrative interview with a Turkish woman living in Germany. The author analyzes the process of identity changes influenced by the narrator's migration experiences. It has at least two aspects. One aspect refers to the cultural roots of the narrator. New experiences have changed her self-image of being a woman. A second aspect is connected with the narrator's life course. The narrative shows how a naive girl has become an adult and independent woman. Being a woman is defined with the help of categories belonging to Western culture. Therefore, the process of migration is related to losing culturally influenced ways of describing the narrator's identity. As a result, she becomes a stranger in her homeland, but she also remains a stranger in the country to which she migrated. The auhtor analyzes the narrator's work on this problem.' (author's abstract)
