Inhalt: The ebook edition of this title is Open Access and freely available to read online. The era of team science has long since dawned. However, in order for the individual members of a team to work well, research organizations need to provide a productive and naturally non-discriminatory working environment. Bringing together and integrating researchers and their diverse backgrounds in effective teams does not happen on its own. To harness the positive effects of diversity, it must be understood and managed proactively. The edited collection Diversity and Discrimination in Research Organizations provides researchers with empirical studies on the question of whether and to what extent the social identity of the academic workforce affects their individual integration in research organizations. Practitioners receive guidance and suggestions on possible starting points and requirements for programmes to improve equal opportunities and work climate in their research organizations. The articles can be roughly divided into two categories according to the guiding questions of this edited collection: macro studies surveying the extent of discrimination and harassment in research organizations and micro studies exploring the influence of the specific cultural contextual conditions of the academic workplace on experiences of discrimination and harassment related to the diversity of the workforce.

Inequalities and the Paradigm of Excellence in Academia
Herausgeber/in:
Jenkins, Fiona; Hoenig, Barbara; Weber, Susanne M.; Wolfram, Andrea
Quelle: London: Routledge (Routledge research in gender and society, 99), 2022.
Inhalt: This volume examines the criteria of excellence producing inequalities of gender in the daily working environment and evaluation of academics.
Policy makers have increasingly placed emphasis on gender equality as part of a strategy for achieving research excellence, and efforts to reduce gender bias have become mainstream. This book suggests that this goal has remained elusive in practice due to continuing under-representation of women across many academic and scientific fields. Questioning the old structures of male-dominance still prevalent in national research policy, the book explores the effects of institutional values and practices on the careers of academics, particularly the academic identities of women and their career developments.
It focuses on case-studies drawn from Europe while also highlighting the rise of new forms of public management and a neo-liberal framing of the value of academic work, that have a much broader global reach. Using participatory research, the book analyses contemporary forms of ‘gendered excellence’ in an intersectional and international perspective. It will be of interest to junior/senior researchers, teachers and scholars in Sociology, Education, Gender Studies, History, Political Science and Science and Technology Studies.

Neoliberalism, gender and education work - (Paperback, forthcoming 30.6.2020)
Herausgeber/in:
Robert, Sarah A.; Pitzer, Heidi; Muñoz García, Ana Luisa; Pitzer, Heidi K.
Quelle: London: Routledge; Taylor & Francis, 2020.
Inhalt: How does neoliberalism in the education field shape who teachers are and what they can be? What are the effects of neoliberal logic on students? How is gender at the core of what it means to teach and learn in neoliberal educational institutions? Neoliberalism, Gender and Education Work examines the everyday labour of educating in a variety of contexts in order to answer these questions in new and productive ways. Neoliberal ideals of standardisation, accountability and entrepreneurialism are having undeniable effects on how we define teaching and learning. Gender is central to these definitions, with care work and other forms of affective labour simultaneously implicated in standards of teacher quality and undervalued in metrics of assessment. Gathering research from across four continents and education settings ranging from elementary school to higher education, to popular social movements, the methodologically diverse case studies in this book offer insight into how teachers and students negotiate the intertwined logics of neoliberalism and gender. Beyond an indictment of contemporary institutions, Neoliberalism, Gender and Education Work provides inspiration with its documentation of the creative practices and selfhoods emerging in the "cracks" of the neoliberal ideological apparatus.
