Inhalt: The focus of this paper will be reading affect. By working through examples of ethnographic research with domestic and care workers and their employers in Germany from a discursive-deconstructive perspective, I will show how a deconstructive reading of affect can add to our understanding of (a) 'the speaking subject' embedded within a discursive framework, and, (b) "intensity" in the encounters between domestic and care workers and their employers. These encounters occur in a "heterotopian space", a heterogeneous space ruled by the effects of affective bonds. In this space affect denotes a more or less organised experience, an experience which probably has empowering and disempowering consequences, registered at the level of encounter, and not necessarily to be understood in linguistic terms, but which is analysable as effect (MASSUMI, 1996, p.237). It is by thinking through the words of those who inhabit this gendered and ethnicised heterotopia that the paper looks at the following questions: How can this encounter be read on the basis of affective bonds? How can we grasp affect as a moment of intensity in these relationships? What can reading FOUCAULT, DERRIDA and SPIVAK and thinking through them add to the theorisation of affect?

(Autorenreferat)

Brañas-Garza, Pablo; Espinosa-Fernández, Lourdes; Serrano-del-Rosal, Rafael
Quelle: Time & Society, 16 (2007) 1, S 99-118
Inhalt: This study provides additional empirical evidence for research concerning the effects of gender and age on retrospective time judgements using data obtained from a Spanish database with more than 40,000 individual observations on time estimations. Statistical analyses were performed using the Levene F-test and the t-test of variances and means, respectively. The most important results of the study are as follows: (a) differences in time estimation in relation to gender largely depend on the age groups analysed, with greater differences observed in the younger age group; and (b) although there are some differences regarding age, they are related to certain age groups, particularly the youngest age group.
Postfeminist media culture: elements of a sensibility
Autor/in:
Gill, Rosalind
Quelle: European Journal of Cultural Studies, 10 (2007) 2, S 147-166
Inhalt: "The notion of postfeminism has become one of the most important in the lexicon of feminist cultural an alysis. Yet there is little agreement about what postfeminism is. This article argues that postfeminism is best understood as a distinctive sensibility, made up of a number of interrelated themes. These include the notion that femininity is a bodily property; the shift from objectification to subjectification; an emphasis upon self-surveillance, monitoring and self-discipline; a focus on individualism, choice and empowerment; the dominance of a makeover paradigm; and a resurgence of ideas about natural sexual difference. Each of these is explored in some detail, with examples from contemporary Anglo-American media. It is precisely the patterned articulation of these ideas that constitutes a postfeminist sensibility. The article concludes with a discussion of the connection between this sensibility and contemporary neoliberalism." [author's abstract]
News cultures, security and transnational belonging: cross-generational perspectives among british Pakista
Autor/in:

Quelle: European Journal of Cultural Studies, 10 (2007) 3, S 327-342
Inhalt: "Muslim women have often been stereotyped as being trapped in an oppressive and patriarchal system that neither provides freedom of expression nor develops their full potential. This study addresses such 'misconceptions', highlighting the ability of British Muslim women to construct their religious, national and gender identities by engaging in lively debates and questioning what appears to be unjust. Dominant public and media discourses currently often equate Muslims with 'terrorists'. Muslim women challenge this conception by participating in news cultures and negotiating their transnational citizenship. This study shows that the religious and political cultures of families shape women's perceptions and experiences of security and transnational belonging, rather than education." [author's abstract]
Appropriating the mosque: women's religious groups in Khartoum
Titelübersetzung:Die Aneignung der Moschee: religiöse Frauengruppen in Khartoum
Autor/in:
Nageeb, Salma A.
Quelle: Afrika Spectrum, 42 (2007) 1, S 5-27
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: 'This paper discusses the case of women's mosques groups in the capital of Sudan which have considerably spread since the National Islamic Front (NIF) seized power in 1989. The paper empirically demonstrates how the mosque groups are forming a social space for women and how this is leading to the appropriation and transformation of a public-religious and a highly masculine space such as the mosque. The main argument of the paper maintains that the case of the mosque groups contests the undifferentiated view that women in Islamic and specially Islamised societies are (necessarily) oppressed and that the only way to question the unequal gender relation and power structure is by getting away from religion. The paper asserts that, on the contrary, women active in mosque groups are claiming (more) power by becoming (more) religious. Through this power they constitute a space, transform public and religious ones and negotiate their gendered position vis-à-vis social and religious authorities and institutions.' Review Essay: In der Falle der Synthetisierung von Diskursanalyse und soziologischer Feldtheorie
Titelübersetzung:Review Essay: In the Trap of Synthesizing Discourse Analysis and Sociological Field Theory
Autor/in:
Jäger, Siegfried
Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 8 (2007) 2
Inhalt: In this book Oliver GEDEN analyses the ways two right-wing populist parties, the Austrian FPÖ and the Swiss SVP, interpret the topics of immigration and gender / family. He does so in the frame of a discourse analysis based on methods derived from the sociology of knowledge; and he combines the Foucauldian theory of discourse with the capital and field theory of Pierre BOURDIEU. He is first and foremost interested in (the great variety of) the reactions of both parties to their transition from opposition to government. By putting the various political topics into their respective contexts he succeeds in explaining these different reactions sociologically. To sum up: on the one hand the SVP remains stable and does not divert from its right-wing populist course, on the other the FPÖ becomes a kind of "pet swine" ["Verhausschweinung"], declines and loses voters and eventually splits up. Furthermore he tracks down the connections in the semiotic offerings of right-wing parties to "common-sense" knowledge in society. The analytical procedure and its theoretical links represent a common, present-day variety of discourse analysis. First, it does not approach the theoretical relationship between discourse and reality in the way FOUCAULT did, but refers to BOURDIEU. Second, explicitly—and to my mind not always beneficially—it postulates that discourse analysis has for a long time been dominated by linguistic concepts. However, one cannot forfeit the use of linguistic tools and neither does GEDEN ("semantic contents", "topics", "narratives", "style", "rhetorics"). It would be preferable to bring together the important discourse-analytical findings of various disciplines rather than—rashly—to have them compete against each other. Finally, this attempt at empirical analysis could well contribute to further elaboration on the concept of discourse analysis for the cultural sciences.

Pregnant Bodies: Norwegian female employees in global working life
Autor/in:
Børve, Hege Eggen
Quelle: European Journal of Women's Studies, 14 (2007) 4, S 311-326
Inhalt: "This article examines the impact that the interplay between workplace, the welfare state and global working life has on female workers when they become pregnant. By focusing on two highly educated Norwegian female workers, it explores how this change process takes place in two companies operating in the global market located in different countries: Norway and the US. Pregnancy contributes to transforming the neutralized bodiless female worker into an embodied worker with gender. The female workers' experiences and negotiations represent forms of global action on local stages. This is illustrated by four processes: `married to work', `pregnant and still married to work', `negotiating separation from work' and `excluding mothering'. The findings indicate the significance of taking welfare state and workplace policy approaches into consideration in studies of global effects on employees." [author's abstract]
A Gendered Analysis of Labour Market Informalization and Access to Health in Chile
Autor/in:
Gideon, Jasmine
Quelle: Global Social Policy, 7 (2007) 1, S 75-94
Inhalt: Health sector reforms across Latin America are replacing the concept of risk-sharing across the population with more individualized approaches to accessing health care, and health insurance schemes have been advocated by the World Bank as a means of helping poor people overcome the risk of ill health. Yet at the same time the lowering of labour standards and the growth of informal workers means that for an increased number of workers, contributing to a health insurance scheme is not feasible. Drawing on evidence from Chile this article examines the gendered dimensions of these processes and highlights the ways in which the gender division of labour means that women are more adversely affected than men.
