At the Top?

Inhalt: As only few people are in personal contact with leaders in professional organisations of science and the economy, the media plays a central role in communicating scientific and economic issues. Consequently, a great share of public knowledge about successful scientists and managers develops on the basis of information provided on a daily basis by journalists. This study thus inquires about the ways in which media representatives portray and problematize leaders in science and the economy. This includes particularly a comparison between the two sectors as well as between gender groups. The study consists of a qualitative discourse analysis of print media articles about leaders in science and the economy in the following newpapers and magazines: Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Tageszeitung, Die Zeit, Der Spiegel, Focus, Capital, Manager Magazin, Bild der Wissenschaft und Spektrum der Wissenschaft. This evaluation was conducted over a period of seven months in 2008. In discussing the results of the study, this paper adopts a deconstructive approach to gender studies and frames the discussion on journalism from a cultural perspective.

Health Resilience: Concept and Empirical Evidence to Reduce Health Inequalities among the Elderly
Autor/in:

Quelle: Bundesinstitut für Bevölkerungsforschung (BIB); Wiesbaden (BiB Working Paper, 2-2012), 2012. 18 S
Inhalt: In the face of persistent health inequalities in later life, the objective of the study is to examine whether distinct forms of health lifestyles and individual or collective social capital predict the probability of health resilience among a cohort of men and women aged 65 and older from lower social classes. A longitudinal study design based on four waves of the German Socio-Economic Panel (2002 to 2008) was employed. The study cohort included 2,075 participants. Analyses were performed using hierarchical-linear models, cluster analyses and binary logistic regressions. The main outcome measures were health-related quality of life, based on a modified SF12, and a dichotomised measure for health resilience based on the SF12 scores. A social gradient was observed for the physical health of men and for the mental health of women, respectively, with participants from lower social classes reporting lesser scores of health-related quality of life compared to participants with higher socioeconomic status. Regarding the physical resilience of elderly men, a moderate health conscious lifestyle was the most pronounced predictor (OR=9.5, p<0.1%). Social capital did not elevate the probability of physical resilience among men. Mental resilience of women was strongly associated with a health conscious lifestyle as well as a moderate health risky lifestyle (OR=4.2, p<0.1% in each case). Quantitative aspects of social capital, like an above average number of friends and close relatives, were positively associated with mental resilience of elderly women (OR=1.9, p<0.1% and OR=1.3, p<5%, respectively). The data provides evidence that health conscious as well as moderate health risky lifestyles and quantitative aspects of individual social capital serve as protective factors for health resilience among older men and women with low socioeconomic status. The findings could be used as guidelines to promote health resilience among the elderly in lower social classes and thus to reduce health inequalities in later life.

Top down or bottom up?: a cross-national study of vertical occupational sex segregation in twelve European countries

Inhalt: "Starting with a comparative assessment of different welfare regimes and political economies from the perspective of gender awareness and "pro-women" policies, this paper identifies the determinants of cross-national variation in women's chances of being in a high-status occupation in twelve West European countries. Special emphasis is given to size and structure of the service sector, including share of women in public employment and structural factors such as trade union density and employment protection. The first level of comparison between men and women concentrates on gender representation in the higher echelons of the job hierarchy, while in the second section we extend the scope of analysis, comparing women in high-status occupations and low-wage employment in order to allow for a more nuanced study of gender and class interaction. The first analysis is based on European Social Survey data for the years 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008, capturing recent trends in occupational dynamics. Results indicate that in general a large service sector and a high trade union density enhance women's chances of being in a high-status occupations while more specifically a large public sector helps to reduce channeling women in low-wage employment. Thus, equality at the top can well be paired with inequality at the bottom, as postindustrial countries with a highly polarized occupational hierarchy such as the UK show." (author's abstract)

Men too sometimes shy away from competition: the case of team competition

Inhalt: "Recent results in experimental and personnel economics indicate that women do not
like competitive environments as much as men. This article presents an experimental
design giving participants the opportunity to enter a tournament as part of a
team rather than alone. While a large and significant gender gap in entry in the individual
tournament is found in line with the literature, no gender gap is found in
entry in the team tournament. Women do not enter the tournament significantly
more often when it is team-based but men enter significantly less when they are
part of a team rather than alone. The main reason for men’s disaffection for the
team competition appears to be linked to the uncertainty on their teammate’s ability.
More precisely, high-performing men fear to be the victims of the free-riding
behaviour of their teammate." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "Recent experimental results indicate that women do not like competitive environments as much as men do. Another literature is interested in the effect of social identity on economic behaviors. This paper investigates in the lab the impact of social identity on men and women's willingness to compete both individually and as part of a team. To this aim, participants from the Identity sessions had to go through group identity building activities in the lab while participants from the Benchmark sessions did not. The main result is that men are only willing to enter a team competition with a teammate of unknown ability if they share a common group identity with him or her. This change of behavior seems to be caused by high-performing men who are less reluctant to be matched with a possibly less able participant when he or she belongs to his group. On the other hand, group identity does not seem to induce women to take actions more in the interest of the group they belong to." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "From a cross-nationally comparative perspective, this report provides a thorough overview of the relationship between parenthood an work. To start with, the paper first provides an over-view of institutional framework conditions that affect work-family reconciliation in European countries. Subsequently, employment patterns of men and women are being reconstructed, and it is analyzed in how these patterns can be systematically traced back to nation-specific approaches in employment and family policy. Finally, the report investigates in how far the nation-specific reconciliation arrangements translate into specific patterns of work family con-flict."[author´s abstract]
