Inhalt: Gender inequality in sciences is an ongoing unsolved issue. Many studies have been carried out to tackle the gender specific problems in scientific communication and scientific careers. The EU-Statistics ("She Figures") document the still dominant pattern of lower female presence in higher academic ranks in almost all European Union member states. There are discrepancies between EU science policy and national social policies. The prevailing "publish or perish" attitude, atypical employment as accepted norm and the forced international mobility are factors which hamper the young and female academics' scientific careers. How open for women are the so called "open initiatives"? Women are sceptical towards FLOSS (free/libre open source software), they feel intimidated by the male dominated "chilly" working climate. Only 13 percent of the international Wikipedia writers are female. Only articles on traditionally male topics as soccer are considered as relevant in the German Wikipedia and are allowed to "survive". There is almost no open access publishing in German gender studies. Generally the surveys of attitudes and practices of scholars on open access publishing ignore the gender variable. The only exception is a larger survey of the DFG. In this study women more often than men wish more training in open access publishing techniques.

Der Kampf um Anerkennung in Gewaltkarrieren von Mädchen
Titelübersetzung:Struggle for recognition in girls' careers of violence

Details
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In this article, key aspects of girls' trajectories of physical violence will be identified. The discussion will focus on the influence of social institutions such as the family, school and youth welfare services on these dynamics. The biographical dynamics shows that the starting point of an expansion of trajectories of violence can be traced back to far-reaching degradations and denials in institutional contexts. These are also referred to as 'biographical drift', which are related to situational aspects such as the general physical readiness for battle, specific Patterns of action, violent attitudes and a distinctive self-image of girls. The integration of biographical and situational aspects of the trajectories of violence will follow the introduced heuristics of a struggle for recognition. It provides a comprehending access to the dynamic of trajectories of violence in the context of a defense of honor and doing gender based on a conception of the female corporeality." Rekrutierungsprozesse österreichischer Regierungsmitglieder im Geschlechtervergleich
Titelübersetzung:Recruitment processes of Austrian members of government in a gender comparative perspective
Autor/in:
Schwediauer, Veronika
Quelle: SWS-Rundschau, 52 (2012) 1, S 47-68
Details
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Political recruitment processes represent products of the societal and political power relations, which bear gendered structures. A gender-comparative analysis of political recruitment processes is apt to uncover these gendered power relations. A theoretical perspective on power is completely absent in the hitherto produced literature on political recruitment (and gender). Bourdieu's power-centered concepts of field and capital are valuable tools to bridge this gap and to endeavor a gender-comparative (power) analysis of recruitment processes. This article investigates the capital forms and the political careers of the Austrian members of government and their gender-specific effects from the time frame of 1966 to 2006." (author's abstract)

Socialist and post-socialist functional elites in East Germany
Titelübersetzung:Sozialistische und postsozialistische Eliten in Ostdeutschland
Autor/in:
Salheiser, Axel
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 37 (2012) 2, S 123-138
Details
Inhalt: "This paper provides a brief overview of elite change and continuity in East Germany as a post-socialist society. To do so, at first, some peculiarities of the former cadre system and elites in socialist East Germany, i.e. the late German Democratic Republic, are addressed with regard to social structure development and the arrangement of generations. Selected empirical evidence is based on cross-sectoral, longitudinal and cohort analyses and the inspection of prosopographic elite data compiled until the end of the 1980s which deconstruct the myth of a levelled egalitarian socialist society. In the second part of the paper, elite change and continuity after the political change of 1989/90 is discussed in the context of the transformation of institutions. Inspired by Bourdieu's analytic paradigm, one central thesis on the career survivals, take-offs, and breakdowns of East German elites is the continued validity and efficacy of social and cultural capital obtained before the fall of the wall, most of all formal qualification. Dimension of vertical social inequality under socialist rule, such as gender and class background, remain to be decisive until today." (author's abstract)
