Inhalt: Following trade agreements between ASEAN states, the expansion of cross-border roads and bridges between Laos and Thailand has linked local communities and distant markets in increasingly diverse ways. Although the planned impacts of such integration are expected to be beneficial, effects on the ground vary, as witnessed at a sleepy outpost in Xayabury and a more vibrant crossing in Savannakhet. This paper discusses first the physical setting of such border facilities, and then explores their actual local effects on traders’ activities, highlighting changes in gender roles and perceptions of entrepreneurial competition participated in by women in the two research sites.

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The paper is part of a larger investigation which analyses the potentials of open access publishing in order to increase the publication and therefore career opportunities for female
social scientists. It compares three thematically and methodologically similar social sciences journals: the open-access journal 'Forum Qualitative Social Research' (FQS) and the two Closed-Access-/ Hybrid journals 'Zeitschrift für qualitative Forschung' (ZQF) and 'Sozialer Sinn' (SoSi). The data was collected on the percentage of female editorial and advisory board members of these three journals (N=184 total). An extensive reconstruction and analysis was carried out to mark the gender structure of the authorship of the three journals 2000-2008 published articles (N=1557 total)." (author's abstract)

Top down or bottom up?: a cross-national study of vertical occupational sex segregation in twelve European countries
Autor/in:
Schäfer, Andrea; Tucci, Ingrid; Gottschall, Karin
Quelle: Universität Bremen, Zentrum für Sozialpolitik; Bremen (ZeS-Arbeitspapier, 04/2011), 2011. 46 S
Inhalt: "Starting with a comparative assessment of different welfare regimes and political economies from the perspective of gender awareness and "pro-women" policies, this paper identifies the determinants of cross-national variation in women's chances of being in a high-status occupation in twelve West European countries. Special emphasis is given to size and structure of the service sector, including share of women in public employment and structural factors such as trade union density and employment protection. The first level of comparison between men and women concentrates on gender representation in the higher echelons of the job hierarchy, while in the second section we extend the scope of analysis, comparing women in high-status occupations and low-wage employment in order to allow for a more nuanced study of gender and class interaction. The first analysis is based on European Social Survey data for the years 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008, capturing recent trends in occupational dynamics. Results indicate that in general a large service sector and a high trade union density enhance women's chances of being in a high-status occupations while more specifically a large public sector helps to reduce channeling women in low-wage employment. Thus, equality at the top can well be paired with inequality at the bottom, as postindustrial countries with a highly polarized occupational hierarchy such as the UK show." (author's abstract)

Quelle: Eurolimes, (2011) Supl. 3, S 249-262
Inhalt: This article aims to analyze and compare the press coverage of the two most visible male and female candidates for a Member of the European Parliament office during the campaign for the European elections held in Romania, June 2009. The present study examines a month of coverage in the four most influential broadsheets and tabloids in Romania: Cancan, EvenimentulZilei, Gândul and Libertatea. Using a design of content analysis, the results of this paper emphasize that Elena Băsescu received less coverage than did George Becali. There were also found qualitative differences in coverage, attributed to Elena Băsescu’s gender, who was depicted as not being viable to represent the Romanians interests in Brussels.

Widerstand angesichts verleiblichter Herrschaft?
Titelübersetzung:Resistance in the face of embodied gender relations? Subject positions of victimized women struggling for recognition - conclusions for the prevention of violence
Autor/in:
Glammeier, Sandra
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "On the basis of a qualitative study this paper presents a new perspective an violence against women. It argues that women are not only suppressed and hurt by the violence experienced, but also by social constructions that position them as potential victims before, during and alter the violence. The article Shows the struggle for recognition as an important action orientation pattern for victimized women. However, this struggle is limited by means of the embodiment of male dominance. On the one hand this paper describes processes that interfere with resistance against violence and that play a decisive part in stabilizing patriarchal dominance systems. On the other hand it provides ways in which to counteract these processes." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article discusses perspectives of violence research in the field of violence against elderly people. In the beginning of the 1980s, when violence against the elderly became a theme for science and research in Germany, debates were dominated by the expierence and casusitics of social workers. As a result a gender bias developed in research and a picture of violence as a female conflict was institutionalized." (author's abstract)

Violence against Women and Ethnicity: Commonalities and Differences across Europe
Herausgeber/in:
Thiara, Ravi K.; Condon, Stephanie A.; Schröttle, Monika
Quelle: Opladen, 2011. 426 S
Inhalt: This book draws together both: theory and practice on minority/migrant women and gendered violence. The interplay of gender, ethnicity, religion, class, generation and sexuality in shaping the lives, experiences and choices of minority/migrant women affected by violence has not always been adequately theorised within much of the existing writing on violence against women. Feminist theory, especially the insights provided by the concept of intersectionality, are central to the editors' conceptual frameworks. Violence against women has received greater political attention across Europe since the 1990s, leading also to increased research in this area. While the responses to the issue vary in different European contexts, there are clearly some similarities reported about the forms and impacts of violence against women. Research and practice traditions on the issue also vary, depending on the level of importance and resources attached. Despite extensive research on violence against women generally, knowledge on the issues and experiences of women and children from minority/migrant groups is more fragmented and at times scant. This leaves a clear gap and no book has yet drawn together both existing research and practice on minority/migrant women and gendered violence in a theorised way. Such a book is long overdue. It has far reaching relevance as minority/migrant communities are settled in all major countries across Europe, which are all struggling with similar issues in research and practice.
Migration, Geschlecht, Gewalt: Überlegungen zu einem intersektionellen Gewaltbegriff
Titelübersetzung:Migration, gender, violence: towards an intersectional concept of violence
Autor/in:
Sauer, Birgit
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Political measures against as well as scientific debates about so-called 'traditional harmful practices' against women in western immigration countries put the necessity of an intersectional concept of violence on the feminist scientific agenda, Such a concept should aim to escape the trap of culturalizing the 'Other'. It should also build the ground to guarantee sustainable harm reduction without stigmatizing minority groups nor victimizing women affected by violence. In the context of a broad feminist notion of violence the article suggests the re-theorization of the concept of violence against women. This conceptualization should include first the interplay of structures and discourses of violence, second the interaction of structures of inequality between minority groups and dominant society, and third the intersection of structures of inequality and violence between gender, culture, ethnicity, religion, and class."
