Inhalt: This article offers a reflexive account of conducting research on Polish migration to Scotland from the perspective of the "outsider". The contribution argues for a revision to the insider/outsider dichotomy viewing it as inadequately nuanced in relation to the multiple intersectionalities performed through the research encounter. It is based on data collected from biographical-narrative interviews with Polish young people living in Edinburgh, Scotland. The article explores the interview encounter between an English researcher and Polish young people about the experience of EU mobility and argues that as migration narratives unfold the distinctions between the "researcher" and the "researched" blur. In particular, I focus on the intersections of gender, class and nationality to show how different positionalities are negotiated and confronted through reflexivity. The interview is a creative process involving co-construction of narratives through dialogue, embodied performances and non-cognitive associations that draw out the multiple intersectionalities of both parties. Through this process the binary of insider/outsider is called into question and this article examines the usefulness of this dichotomy as a framework for understanding the research relationship.(author's abstract)
Making and Remaking the Transnational: Of Boundaries, Social Spaces and Social Mechanisms

Inhalt: There is now a third generation of transnational scholarship, which goes beyond the analysis of cross-border ties and looks at the genesis, reproduction and change of boundaries in social spaces, both within and across nation-state borders. This analysis proceeds in five steps. The first describes three generations and directions of transnational scholarship. The second part introduces the more specific concepts of transnationalization and transnationality. At the centre of the third part is a comparison of transnational and global and world approaches. A transnational lens looks at how boundaries in cross-border settings evolve and change. The fourth part focuses on the concepts of boundary and social space. The perspective is process-oriented and shows how borders and boundaries are redrawn in a period of intense restructuration of capital, changing geopolitical constellations and new constellations of cultural diversity. In order to move towards causal analysis of boundary change, the fifth part uses a case study to consider the social mechanisms operative in the (un)making of boundaries along diverse characteristics, such as religion, class, ethnicity, and gender. The question for future research is to integrate various (spatial) scales of analysis to arrive at a better understanding of changing forms of social inequality across borders.

Transnational Social Protection: An Emerging Field of Study

Inhalt: How do the efforts at social protection by cross-border migrants impact upon social inequalities? While the 'old' social question between workers and capitalists was addressed within the frames of national welfare states and social policies from the late nineteenth century onwards, the 'new' social question - running along diverse lines of inequalities, such as gender, class, ethnicity and religion - has implications far beyond national borders since flows of persons, goods, capital and services are transnational. Migrations are of particular relevance for understanding the transnational social question because they link the disparate and fragmented worlds of unequal life chances and social protection. Of particular interest is the question of how cross-border social protection involving migrants results in the reinforcement of existing inequalities, e.g. between regions and within households, and creates new lines of inequalities. This state of affairs necessitates a rethinking of national social citizenship and its significance for the legitimation of social inequalities.

Migration, Geschlecht, Gewalt: Überlegungen zu einem intersektionellen Gewaltbegriff
Titelübersetzung:Migration, gender, violence: towards an intersectional concept of violence
Autor/in:
Sauer, Birgit
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Political measures against as well as scientific debates about so-called 'traditional harmful practices' against women in western immigration countries put the necessity of an intersectional concept of violence on the feminist scientific agenda, Such a concept should aim to escape the trap of culturalizing the 'Other'. It should also build the ground to guarantee sustainable harm reduction without stigmatizing minority groups nor victimizing women affected by violence. In the context of a broad feminist notion of violence the article suggests the re-theorization of the concept of violence against women. This conceptualization should include first the interplay of structures and discourses of violence, second the interaction of structures of inequality between minority groups and dominant society, and third the intersection of structures of inequality and violence between gender, culture, ethnicity, religion, and class."
Titelübersetzung:Intersectional perspective on care in France: a methodological consideration on migrant's care work in feminist welfare state research
Autor/in:
Beckmann, Sabine
Quelle: GENDER - Zeitschrift für Geschlecht, Kultur und Gesellschaft, 3 (2011) 3, S 24-38
Inhalt: "Despite comprehensive care facilities in France, families rely on migrant care work to reconcile work and family life. This paper highlights this phenomenon and pursues two objectives: From an intersectional perspective I discuss how migrant care work is specifically connected to the categories of gender, class, and racelmigration and how it is embedded in the frameworks of the welfare state. Intersectional analysis reveals the construction of power relations and the establishment of hierarchical differences through the actions of the welfare state. Drawing on a normative analysis of care makes it possible to evaluate the care regime in France. For this purpose, principles have been evolved from the inclusive citizenship, sociability, and capabilities approach." (author's abstract)
