Inhalt: This article exposes some points about the right to abortion as part of human's rights question. Therefore, it is important a deep understanding about the ways that this question have been thought in Brazil, where there are more restricted laws and a high maternal mortality rate decurrent of unsafe
abortions. Furthermore, is present in this discussion the idea of sanctification above women as mothers in Brazil, and how this social construction influences the debate about safe abortion.

Inhalt: This paper reviews the current definitions of generativity and its changes through the life cycle. The main characteristics of the life narratives related to the expression of generativity's culminating points are established. A content analysis of fifteen interviews with older women who had experienced the development of a culminating point of generativity during their lives is carried out. Through the qualitative analysis of the narratives, it was determined that there is a continuity of generativity from childhood to old age. Four significant moments related to this development were established: 1. start with early expressions of empathy, solidarity and helpfulness; 2. expansion and productivity in adulthood; 3. consolidation of generative achievements; 4. generative continuity during old age.

Frauen in Sanaa: öffentliche Präsenz und mediale Repräsentation
Titelübersetzung:Women in Sanaa: Public Appearance and Visual Representation

Linke, Irina

Inhalt: An exponential increase in media usage in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa (foreign satellite channels, Yemeni TV, photography and video) changes not only the (media) public (Öffentlichkeit), but social spaces in a local setting within a particular global-local framework.
In this article I discuss women in the Yemeni capital who use television and other pictorial representations strategically, and, in reworking the frontiers between visibility and invisibility, change the gendered social spaces of their life world (Lebenswelt). Pictures, as parts of the life world open up views into new spaces ([Blick-] Räume) and make new relationships ([Blick-] Kontakte) possible. Looks and gazes determine social space and play a part in the social construction of bodies and spaces. This is negotiated on the performative as well as on the discursive level.
The case study I present is part of a larger research project based on one year of fieldwork, field notes and 45 hours of audio-visual material. Analysis of the discourses of young women about their own image practices reveals how they perceive the endangerment of a social order, how they articulate their interest in change, and their strategies for becoming "visible." Thus, this article refers to culturally different readings of what can be seen.

Zwischen Provokation und Anpassung: Handlungsmächtigkeit als diskursive Positionierung
Titelübersetzung:Between provocation and conformity: agency as discursive positioning
Autor/in:
Nentwich, Julia C.
Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 10 (2009) 3, 20 S
Inhalt: In this article I present the analyses of eight problem-centered interviews with individuals involved in the struggle for women's right to vote in the Swiss Cantons Appenzell-Innerrhoden and Appenzell-Ausserrhoden. The goal was to reveal the discursive constructions of subjective agency in the context of the societal change process. Highly relevant for subject positioning and the construction of a "warranting voice" are the balancing acts between "provocation and conformity" and change coming "from within" or "from outside." These two extremes have been discussed as respectively exclusive. However, the analysis shows that subject positions enabling change agency have only to be realized through a process of negotiation between these discursive repertoires. The empirical analysis shows in detail that the social constructionist position of a constructed subject is not opposed to the idea of agency. On the contrary, the process of subject positioning is the necessary pre-condition for agency.

Inhalt: Working in agriculture and industry, as nurses with the Red Cross, or helping as auxiliaries in the Army, women are to many the unknown and unpraysed he- roes of the First World War. Their contribution to the war effort, sufferings and trauma have been ignored by governments at the time, and covered by the Great Deeds of politicians and generals, and the deafening noise of the great, heroic battles. From this perspective, the Romanian case is a paradigmatic one. Using the models developed by Gill Thomas and Maria Bucur, the present study investigates the participation of Western and Romanian women at war as reflected in documents, media, diaries. Following this, asymetric compari- son will help underline the similarities and differences between the ”home front” in England, France and Germany on one hand, and Romania on the other hand. Women emancipation, pacifism, socialism, feminism, war, trauma, and memory; are but a few issues introduced with this study. My intention was not to write a ”herstory”, defending women, and providing heroines, but to open a new, unexplored area of research that is too often considered unimpor- tant or un-accessible. The main purpose was to analyse the impact of interven- tionist state policies on women life, and to reveal some European, and national outcomes of it. In this sense, the Great War represented an excellent case.

Adapted Traditions: The Case of Traditional Palestinian Women Healers in Israel

Inhalt: This article examines transformations in the roles and treatment practices of traditional Palestinian women healers in Israel. Comparing narratives of women healers residing in Jewish-Arab mixed cities in central Israel with those of their counterparts in the Bedouin community of the Negev reveals that traditional healing has not disappeared as a result of modernization but rather has transformed. Urban women healers are abandoning treatment of physical problems in favor of addressing life hardships; they distance themselves from problems whose cause and treatment are considered natural and prefer those perceived as derived from supernatural causes and treated through supernatural, magical and religious means. Despite these transformations, traditional Palestinian women healers appear as agents of preservation and conservatism, a role that imbues them with a central position in their community. Hence, their place is currently secured and expected to remain so as processes of modernization and acculturation increase in intensity.

Inhalt: European societies have experienced a decrease in the social importance of religious issues. Values and attitudes towards gender roles have also changed in the last decades. In European countries, people have become more egalitarian with respect to the position of women in society. The author tries to identify the relationship between secularization and changes in gender values. As a result of secularization, the individual value system has become fragmented and religious values have lost their coordinating role. The investigation employs cross-national and longitudinal analysis of European Values Survey data (1990, 1999), most of the European countries being included in the study. The results indicate the decreasing impact of traditional religious belief on values related to gender roles during the 1990s in Europe and a common pattern of relationships between gender values and religiosity in most European societies.
