Inhalt: "The present paper inquires into the effects of the expansion on the professional and social status of university graduates. Historically, university graduates have entertained claims to overall elite positions. Efforts at the legitimation of such claims largely were based on the cultural value of academic studies. In the concept of education central to such efforts, litte attention was given to the significance of such socioeconomic factors as income, job security, economic independence, or employment in managerial functions providing a high degree of job identification. It was these factors, however, which gave social homogeneity to the 'educated class'. The hypothesis of the present study is that the expansion of higher education has led to an increasing internal differentiation of this social stratum in socioeconomic terms, and that this development, together with the growing relevance of specialized professional competence, is rapidly neutralizing university education as a legitimating factor in the justification of leadership claims."
