(ICE)
Inhalt: "This paper deals with women's informal information technology skills. Especially in small organizations, women find themselves confronted with new technology without any professional expertise available, and hence forced to learn in mostly a very informal way. The author is going to present some preliminary results of a qualitative study of women assistants working in (male) professionals' office and practices, such as doctors' consulting-room assistants, legal secretaries, and tax consultants' assistants. These women face most of the everyday implementation and improvement problems and may become promotors and more or less informal experts on information technology in the office. Such expertise is usually delegated by the professionals, and their assistants may occupy this field, - in a highly informal way, however. The paper is going to show what in the authors' experience makes women become informal experts or other kinds of user and how their ways of appropriating new computing skills may or may not fit into their occupational strategies."
