(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "With higher education (HE) turning into a mature, though severly underfunded, industry, it is increasingly taken to be a panacea for a great many societal issues and challenges. The ever-growing array of requests and demands it attracts, however, is about to unhinge its cherished institutional ecology, operating system, and governance, and to spawn an unprecedented 'crisis of purpose'. The article argues that HE, research universities in particular, would be ill-advised to comply and try to cope with that surge since this could not but result in institutional overstretch and failure. What is needed, instead, is hard-nosed self-assurance together with far more leeway in individual institutions' mission, organization, and way to do things." (author's abstract)
