Attracting women into male-dominated trades: Views of young women in Australia
Autor/in:
Struthers, Karen; Strachan, Glenda
Quelle: International journal for research in vocational education and training, 6 (2019) 1, S 1-19
Inhalt: Context: The persistent low female participation in male-dominated trades is not attracting a high level of public attention and policy action. There are determined, yet adhoc actions by advocates in response to evidence that economic benefits will be derived for industry and women through increased female participation in the male-dominated trades. Occupational segregation of the trades remains resistant to change.
Methods: To better understand the barriers limiting female participation in the male-dominated trades from the perspective of young women, this PhD study features interviews with female secondary students, complemented by interviews with industry stakeholders and a quantitative analysis of VET and trade participation data. The three primary research questions are: 1) What is the extent of gender segregation in vocational education and training (VET) and typically male-dominated trades in Australia, and how does this compare internationally? 2) Why do very few female students choose male-dominated trades as their job pathway? 3) What can be done, particularly in the education and training sectors, to increase female interest in, and take-up of, the male-dominated trades?
Findings: The results of this research showed that the composition of trade-qualified females in male-dominated trades is persistently low at 2-3%. The views of young women affirmed the evidence showing system-wide barriers limit female interest in these trades. Most influential is that gender stereotypes of work are set by Year 10 and that female enrolment in Maths (a pre-requisite for male-dominated careers) is low; these trades are seen as “jobs for the boys who don’t do academic,” and the fear of intimidation and harassment deters young women. Low enrolment of female students in male-dominated trade courses indicates that this entrenched occupational segregation of the trades will remain resistant to change for some time to come.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that ad hoc responses to overcome gender segregation of the trades is not effective. Influenced by systems theory and a social ecological model (SEM) of change, the researchers promote the need for sustained, nation-wide awareness and action involving VET and school sectors, industry, government and trade unions to attract more women into male-dominated trades.

Wie deuten Wissenschaftlerinnen im Maschinenbau ihren Erfolg?
Titelübersetzung:How Do Female Academics Interpret Their Success?

Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 18 (2017) 1
Inhalt: Female students in mechanical engineering have better chances to achieve an academic career than women in other academic disciplines. In this article we reconstruct how female mechanical engineers interpret for themselves their success. Our reconstruction of the self-interpretations focusses on the "internal biographical mechanisms of regulation" (GIEGEL, 1988). The empirical material encompasses three qualitative primary data collections with female professors, female doctoral candidates, and female students of mechanical engineering. The methods used are narrative and problem-centered interviews. These primary data collections are then analyzed by applying the method of thematic coding. The analysis shows an extraordinarily high level of accordance between the three groups. The first accordance relates to family upbringing, which was aimed at enabling the children to make individual decisions Further agreements concern: 1. biographical resources: a high level of self-confidence of being successful by realizing their own objectives; 2. the dominant interest in technology, based in the natural sciences; 3. the relation to the performance principle: the female mechanical engineers embrace great determination for performance as an essential basis for realizing one’s own interests. These three dimensions specify their "internal biographical mechanism of regulation." It can be assumed that women who opt for mechanical engineering very often possess a distinct aspiration for success. Presumably they would be successful in most other disciplines.
Who Cares?

Inhalt: "Considering the diverse social and welfare state transformation processes, questions about the conditions and possibilities of care work are becoming more and more important. The current conditions for the labor and profession of care workers point out structural factors of inequality. Furthermore, they clarify dynamics in the crises of the gender-specific division of labor. The two fields of work - elderly care and health care - are characterized by different framework conditions according to their institutions, related laws and the history of the professions. However, both fields of public welfare have become increasingly subject to the service economy. At the same time, the possibilities for involvement of the professional groups, for example in the legislative process, are marginal. Within the research group ForGenderCare, the subproject 'Working conditions and representation of interests of nurses in Bavaria' conducted guided interviews with nurses for the elderly, health workers and nurses. Essential were questions about coping with everyday problems and challenges as well as favoring and inhibiting factors of a contradictory practice and collectivization depending on the different professional groups. The paper examines the structural inequalities with regard to actors and institutions in the field of elderly care and health care. These can be identified by means of family-oriented, commoditized welfare and the strengthening of determining sponsors and funding agencies. In addition, and on the basis of the first empirical data, the patterns of expression and coping of nurses are critically examined and placed in a movement theory context." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Between "playing doctor", "work-life-balance", and "highend-medicine": do young doctors challenge "hegemonic masculinity" in the field of medicine?
Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 17 (2016) 1, 30 S
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: In this contribution we discuss the question of whether the so-called "feminization" of medicine challenges persisting power structures in the field. The notion of the "feminization of medicine" implies both the "masculinity" of the field and its change due to the increasing number of female medical doctors. We present the comparative analysis of two group discussions from the longitudinal study "Career Paths and Career Breaks of Medical Doctors During Residency" (KarMed). One discussion was held with women, one discussion with men, all of whom had just completed their medical studies. In both discussions the theme of gender came up manifestly in the discursive context of the so-called "feminization of medicine". The discussants contrasted this "feminization" with the mythologically laden "masculinity" of surgery. The material of our group discussions indicates a persistent masculine norm in the perception of both female and male doctors. Despite all differences between their members, the group of men constituted itself as a group of medical doctors representing the masculine norm. The group of women constituted itself through shared identifications as "women in medicine". We analyzed the material with psychoanalytic methods in social research and we discuss our interpretations in relation to the notions of "feminization" and of "hegemonic masculinity".

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Taking into account the current debate about professionalization, this article provides an historical overview of the job profile of (female) educators (in Germany). Since the beginnings of institutional childcare, looking after young children has been considered a task for women. Although Froebel's philosophy to enhance professionalization in the field of early childhood education and care was adopted by the bourgeois women's movement, it already failed one hundred years ago at the school conference of the German Reich. Since then various opportunities have been missed to strengthen the field of early childhood education and care and to systematically make it an integral part of the education system - including the most recent efforts which aimed to redefine and reestimate qualification requirements and tasks of staff working in early childhood education and care." Still a perfect model? The gender impact of vocational training in Germany
Autor/in:
Haasler, Simone
Quelle: Journal of Vocational Education & Training, 67 (2015) 1, S 78-92
Inhalt: Reconstructing the parallel structure of ‘dual’ and ‘school-based’ vocational routes reveals the close connection between the German vocational training system and the segmentation of the labour market by gender. The example of jobs in childcare and pre-primary education shows that the legacy of semi-professionalism in these occupations is not just rooted in the nature of training and working conditions, but complexly interlinks with the prevalence of the male breadwinner model sustained by social policy regulations and the German taxation system. In France, by contrast, the central state takes responsibility for the provision of childcare from zero to six years of age to support female labour force participation and dual-earner couples. This has also fostered professionalisation in the respective occupations. Whilst this may not necessarily induce a degendering process at the level of horizontal segregation of vocational qualifications, it facilitates gender equality in terms of vertical mobility and the professional status of women.

Titelübersetzung:"...for me there's either the family path or the career path ..." - on the importance of normative requirements in young women's vocational orientation
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "To investigate the relationship between careers and gender, this article takes a genderfocused look at the normative requirements and career-relevant orientation which prove to be important as young women seek vocational orientation and plan their lives. Here ideas about 'pursuing a career' or being a 'career woman' can be understood as prestructured by normative discourses within which certain concepts of 'career' become dominant and have to be updated and adapted by the subjects. Normative requirements already frame the subjects' plans before they begin their working lives, and not only become relevant once they have embarked on a career and gained a certain amount of work experience. In light of this fact, the article shows how 'career' is understood and negotiated in group discussions with young women in the senior years of secondary school." (author's abstract)

Job-related circular mobility and the quality of intimate relationships
Titelübersetzung:Berufsbezogene zirkuläre Mobilität und Partnerschaftszufriedenheit
Autor/in:
Feldhaus, Michael; Schlegel, Monika
Inhalt: "This paper addresses the influence of different types of spatial mobility on relationship quality. Although some studies have been carried out on this question, the existing empirical results remain contradictory. The paper tries to overcome some of these limitations by analyzing to what extent mobility demands show direct as well as indirect effects. Spatial mobility could have impacts on crucial aspects of relationship dynamics, which are theoretically and empirically identified as significant for relationship satisfaction. The mediating variables used therefore include relatedness, autonomy, conflict and the perceived fairness with regard to the division of labor. The data support the stress hypothesis which assumes that job-related mobility has a negative effect on the relationship quality, but only for women and mothers. There are actually positive effects for men. In terms of indirect effects, the results show that spatial mobility does neither reduce relatedness in relationships nor increase conflict behavior significantly. In fact, the opposite effect seems to come to play: There is empirical evidence, especially for women, that more demanding mobility increases the feeling of autonomy within a relationship. It also increases relatedness and reduces perceived conflicts, this in turn having a positive effect on relationship quality." (author's abstract)
Work identity and contradictory experiences of welfare workers in a life-history perspective

Dybbroe, Betina
Quelle: Historical Social Research, 38 (2013) 2, S 107-123
Inhalt: "Transformation of the welfare sectors challenge professional identities of care and welfare workers in Scandinavia. At the same time welfare and care workers take part in these changes and are changed in the psycho-social setting of the workplace. This article presents research about care work in Denmark with a focus on subjective processing of work identity, applying a psycho-societal theoretical and methodical approach. A life historical and experiential understanding of Alfred Lorenzer's cultural theory is applied to understand societal transformations, here in the work place and of professionals in relation to their present scene of work and in relation to their life history. Two concepts are applied, interaction form and scenic understanding, because of their potentials for analyzing workers' experience. The analysis is based on a combined ethnographic and life historical investigation in nursing and involves a young nurse in scenes of the hospital, where gendered life history is re-enacted and present in a gendered work life with fragile possibilities of identification. Social dynamics interact with subjective dynamics in ways that illuminate not only habitual and creative orientations and practices of professionals in care, but also the contradictory transformations of the work, e.g. marketization and democratization in the work place."
