Inhalt: "Higher Education institutions can use information about process and outcome quality provided by graduate surveys for quality assurance and profile development. In this article, the authors look at the evaluations of study programs and the self-assessed competence level of graduates from Bavarian universities from a wide range of subjects. They compare them with each other and with the national average. Bavarian graduates evaluate practical relevance more positively than the average, the instruction in research methods as well as contact with teachers and supervision somewhat more negatively. However, differences between the universities are large. As for competence level, Bavarian graduates rate their subject-specific knowledge and social competence higher than the national average, while they rate their knowledge of research methods somewhat lowlier. Here, graduates of all universities attest themselves a rather similar level of competence." (author's abstract)
Field of study and gender segregation in European labour markets
Titelübersetzung:Studienfach und geschlechtsspezifische Segregation europäischer Arbeitsmärkte

Smyth, Emer; Steinmetz, Stephanie
Quelle: International journal of comparative sociology, Vol. 49 (2008) No. 4/5, S. 257-281
Inhalt: "This article explores the role of field of study in channelling tertiary graduates into gender-appropriate occupations and the extent to which this process varies across countries. Previous research has demonstrated that such cross-country differences can be attributed to the nature of the welfare regime. However, less attention has been devoted to the potential impact of educational institutions and labour market systems. Using the European Union Labour Force Survey 2004 for 17 EU Member States, results of the multilevel analysis reveal that cross-national variation in occupational gender segregation must be seen in the context of institutional variation in education and labour market systems. The representation of women in higher education and the labour force, the gender pay gap and the provision of childcare explain a significant proportion of cross-national variation in occupational segregation by gender." Deutsche Universitäten im Vergleich : Ortswahlentscheidung auf Basis der Auswahlkriterien von Studienanfängern
Titelübersetzung:A comparison of German universities : choices of location based on the selection criteria of first-year students
Autor/in:
Schoberth, Nadine
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Much has been written about the importance and feasibility of higher education entrance examinations in Germany - that is, the procedures and, above all, the criteria by which higher education institutes select their students. However, viewing higher education as either an education market or as a location for realizing an individual basic right discloses an opposite perspective: the selection of institutes by future students who want to study. The only potential students who are going to turn up for an institute's higher education entrance examination are those who find the specific institute attractive in terms of their personal study goals. The numerous higher education rankings offer quality criteria as an aid to selection - with an advisory intention - but are these the criteria that potential students actually apply? This is the context of Nadine Schoberth's empirical study. The author has ascertained these criteria and used them to compare nine universities in terms of how first-year students evaluate them."
Titelübersetzung:Support for freshers at Bavarian Universities of applied sciences
Autor/in:
Gensch, Kristina; Sandfuchs, Gabriele
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Although study courses at German universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) are highly structured and provide well-defined curricula, their drop out rates are comparably high to those at universities. Yet, students tend to drop out earlier at Fachhochschulen. The analysis deals with the question whether students' levels of entrance qualification or influences related to gender are likely to cause an early drop out and what can be done to prevent high drop out rates during the first semesters. Available data suggest that certain fields of study are particularly prone to cause higher drop out rates and that students with an entrance qualification for studies at Fachhochschulen (Fachhochschulreife) are more likely to give up their studies than those with a general higher education entrance qualification (Abitur). Moreover, it is shown that, at large, more young women than young men leave their study courses. Responsible persons at four Fachhochschulen were questioned about their institutions' activities to support freshers. Finally, possible measures are listed to prevent early drop outs in the future." (Autorenreferat)
Studienfachwahl : soziale Reproduktion oder fachkulturelle Entscheidung
Titelübersetzung:Choice of subject of study : social reproduction or special cultural decision
Autor/in:
Georg, Werner
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "On the background of the reproduction theory of Pierre Bourdieu this contribution analyzes the hierarchy of the fields of study in dependency of the social origin of the students between 1985 and 2004. Additionally the relative impact of the students' motivation on the choice of a field of study is surveyed. With data of the working group on university research (Konstanz) multinomial logit models are computed. It can be shown that there are significant effects of the social origin on the choice of a field of study. However, these effects are relatively week compared to the motivation." (author's abstract)
Intending to stay : images of scientists, attitudes toward women, and gender as influences on persistence among science and engineering majors
Autor/in:
Wyer, Mary
Quelle: Journal of women and minorities in science and engineering, Vol. 9 (2003) No. 1, S. 1-16
Inhalt: "Contemporary research on gender and persistence in undergraduate education in science and engineering has routinely focused on why students leave their majors rather than asking why students stay. This study compared three common ways of measuring persistence-commitment to major, degree aspirations, and commitment to a science or engineering career-and emphasized factors that would encourage students to persist, including positive images of scientists and engineers, positive attitudes toward gender equity in science and engineering, and positive classroom experiences. A survey was administered in classrooms to a total of 285 female and male students enrolled in two required courses for majors. The results indicate that the different measures of persistence were sensitive to different influences but that students' gender did not interact with their images, attitudes, and experiences in predicted ways. The study concludes that an individual student's gender may be a more important factor in explaining why some female students leave their science and engineering majors than in explaining why others stay."
