(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article analyses how occupation-specific hours of employment influence the employment interruptions of women after family formation, and whether employment hours have an impact on different educational groups. This study uses detailed longitudinal data from the German National Educational Panel Study and aggregated occupational data from the Microcensus. Our results show how occupation-specific employment hours, even after controlling for individual characteristics, significantly influence the employment interruptions of mothers. The interruption duration of women with tertiary education is solely influenced by the amount of overtime working hours associated with specific occupations. This result indicates that the return-to-work of tertiary educated women remain mostly unaffected by their hours of employment, and likely to be attributed to both elevated opportunity costs and higher career orientations. Whilst medium and less educated women reduce their time-out from their occupation when the working hours are short and working from home is possible. Atypical employment hours, such as night-shift or weekend work, are found to be exclusively relevant for less educated women. Overall, our results demonstrate that hours of employment play an important role for the employment continuity of women without a tertiary education." (author's abstract)

Family migration in a cross-national perspective: the importance of within-couple employment arrangements in
Australia, Britain, Germany, and Sweden

Inhalt: Objective: Migration rates of dual-earner couples are lower than those of male-breadwinner couples. We revisit this issue using a cross-national comparative perspective and examine heterogeneity in the role of female employment in couple relocations. We propose a theoretical framework in which national levels of support for female employment and normative expectations about gender roles act as moderators of the relationship between couple type (i.e., dual-earner and male-breadwinner) and family migration. Methods: We deploy discrete-time event history analyses of harmonised longitudinal data from four large-scale datasets from Australia, Britain, Germany, and Sweden, covering the 1992-2011 period. Results: Consistent with prior research, we find that male-breadwinner couples migrate more often than dual-earner couples in all countries, suggesting that traditional gender structures affecting family migration operate across very different contexts. We also find cross-country differences in the estimated effects of different sorts of absolute and relative partner resources on family migration. Conclusions: We take our results as preliminary evidence that national contexts can serve as moderators of the relationship between within-couple employment arrangements and family migration decisions. Contribution: Our study contributes to family migration literature by illustrating how cross-national comparisons are a valuable methodological approach to put prevailing micro-level explanations of the relationship between female employment and family migration in context.

Titelübersetzung:A comparison of women's and men's professional success : why is the gender gap still widening?
Autor/in:
Abele, Andrea
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article focusses on the lower career success of women compared to men and on factors which might explain this phenomenon. First, theoretical approaches to career development are outlined and linked to approaches from gender research. Then a theoretical model on the construct of gender is outlined. It distinguishes between (biological) sex, gender from an internal perspective (self-concept, goals) and gender from an external perspective (gender stereotypes, gender as a social category). Subsequently, findings on the external perspective (gender stereotypes and their impact on women's career development), the internal perspective (impact of the gender selfconcept and of goals) and, in particular, the interaction between individual and environmental parameters that influence career development are presented. An agentic self-concept and ambitious professional goals are important for successful professional development; both factors are slightly less pronounced in women than in men. In addition, women's - but not men's - professional self-confidence (here specifically female doctors) drops when they enter their profession. Most importantly, women have more breaks in the careers than men and breaks negatively influence career success. Parenthood - being linked to career breaks and reduced working times in women but not in men - is a barrier to career advancement of women, while parenthood tends to boost men's careers. Finally, the authoress discusses outlooks for a more adequate participation of women in high ranking career positions." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "The article points out that the politics of gender equality in Germany have lost the perspective of a feminist critique within the last decades. The topic of care and reproductive work has been completely neglected, the debate is focused only on the employability of women and their integration in the national workforce. The working concept that underlies this development reproduces the separation of paid labor and reproductive work and refers women to the capitalist jobmarket, promising to find equality and liberation there. The article refers to Angela McRobbie and Nancy Fraser, it questions the narrow-minded labor-market-orientation of today's women's policy and calls for a renewal of a feminist critique of the concept of wage labor. Deciphering political utopias: unions, female night work, and gender justice

Inhalt: "The group discussion is a qualitative method perfectly suited for analyzing attitudes and opinions at the supra-individual level and tracing the process of how they emerge. Psychoanalytic group theories expand our understanding of group processes by adding the dimension of the unconscious: groups, too, display defense reactions arid forms of repression. By adding this dimension, the authors can show how social groups proceed to collectively relegate important issues to the realm of the unconscious. In this way, social defense processes are reproduced in actu. In group discussions involving female union members, the predicament of working mothers comes to the fore particularly clearly. An excerpt from a group discussion illustrates that the women seem to perceive night work as the only realistic solution to the problem of reconciling work and family. Only when we turn to a psychoanalytic hermeneutics of scenic understanding are we able to reveal a repressed conception of life looming behind the paradoxical demand: the desire to overcome the separation of productive and reproductive labor in the lives of both sexes; a desire that can only be achieved if labor unions, too, perceive gender relations as a political challenge demanding their attention."
Titelübersetzung:The new German parental leave benefit scheme and its effects on young families' household income and on mothers' paid employment
Autor/in:
Geyer, Johannes; Haan, Peter; Spieß, C. Katharina; Wrohlich, Katharina
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In 2007, Germany introduced a new parental leave benefit scheme, the so-called 'Elterngeld'. The new benefit is an income-related transfer and is granted for a maximum period of 14 months. The more generous, but shorter Elterngeld replaced the former means-tested flat rate benefit that could be drawn for up to 24 months. One of the aims of the reform was to smooth household income in the year after childbirth and another to increase the incentives to return quickly to the labour market. In this study, the authors analyse empirically the change in income in the first year after birth and the effect of increasing incentives for mothers to return to the labour market in the second year after childbirth. They find that the average increase of net household income of families with a child in the first year after birth amounts to 480 euro per month. With respect to labour supply, the authors show that in the first year after childbirth, mothers' labour supply decreases. In the second year labour supply of mothers in East Germany and low-income mothers in both parts of Germany increases." (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat)
