Inhalt: "Taking a look back in history, or at least, at what is presented to us as history, it becomes apparent that it is a meta-narrative shaped by men, a 'his-story', based on an androcentric worldview. The histories of disciplines such as communication science, too, are for the most part concerned with and told by men. Only infrequently, at the sidelines, do women appear. Besides the question of gender as a consequential social marker there is also the question of generation as a cohesive element. This article deals with the life and work of five of communication science's female academics from Germany and Austria (Herta Herzog, Elisabeth Noelle, Marianne Lunzer, Hertha Sturm, Elisabeth Löckenhoff), who belong to the age cohort of those born between 1910 and 1930. Although these female academics do share some common characteristics with respect to their countries of birth, their professions, their sex and the generation to which they belong, they are different in many ways when it comes to their lives and their career paths - compared to one another and to their (male) colleagues. It is these differences and similarities that I will focus on, before discussing the extent to which it can be useful to examine the historical development of an academic field from a gender perspective."
Titelübersetzung:A comparison of women's and men's professional success : why is the gender gap still widening?
Autor/in:
Abele, Andrea
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The article focusses on the lower career success of women compared to men and on factors which might explain this phenomenon. First, theoretical approaches to career development are outlined and linked to approaches from gender research. Then a theoretical model on the construct of gender is outlined. It distinguishes between (biological) sex, gender from an internal perspective (self-concept, goals) and gender from an external perspective (gender stereotypes, gender as a social category). Subsequently, findings on the external perspective (gender stereotypes and their impact on women's career development), the internal perspective (impact of the gender selfconcept and of goals) and, in particular, the interaction between individual and environmental parameters that influence career development are presented. An agentic self-concept and ambitious professional goals are important for successful professional development; both factors are slightly less pronounced in women than in men. In addition, women's - but not men's - professional self-confidence (here specifically female doctors) drops when they enter their profession. Most importantly, women have more breaks in the careers than men and breaks negatively influence career success. Parenthood - being linked to career breaks and reduced working times in women but not in men - is a barrier to career advancement of women, while parenthood tends to boost men's careers. Finally, the authoress discusses outlooks for a more adequate participation of women in high ranking career positions." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Critical, feminist, academic - a contradiction in progress : long lines, too short arms and why everything was never better; a plea in favor of pleasure in reflexive loops and the uncomfortable benefits of academic precarization as a starting-point for critical (thinking) movements

Mayer, Stefanie

Titelübersetzung:Women on the way to an academic career : comparison of the German Empire and the Tsardom
Autor/in:
Maurer, Trude
Quelle: Comparativ : Zeitschrift für Globalgeschichte und vergleichende Gesellschaftsforschung, Jg. 21 (2011) H. 4, S. 93-116
Inhalt: "Starting off with the amazing experience of a woman doctor of German origin who had been Born, educated and socialized in Russia the article discusses and compares higher education of women in tsarist Russia and imperial Germany. In both countries women aspired to be admitted to university, but for decades had to be content with special institutions (which did not confer academic degrees) in Russia and with the status of auditors in Germany. By discussing the particular features of female higher education and the final success of admission as regular students an on equal basis in German universities and as teaching staff in Russian ones (though women were not allowed to study there!), the article aims at raising our awareness of the complexity of different contexts. In addition to concepts of gender roles, the specific features of the educational systems and the demand for academically trained staff have to be taken into account. Only by clarifying how these (sometimes conflicting) forces were reconciled will we be able to understand the complicated processes of female admission in different countries." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Gender Studies - between disciplinary marginalization and institutional establishment : on the current status of institutionalizing gender studies professorships at germanlanguage universities
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The creation of Gender Studies professorships is one important aspect in the process of the long-term institutionalization of Women's Studies/Gender Studies at universities. The article is based on an analysis of the database 'Gender Studies professorships at Germanlanguage universities' (as of July 2010) regarding the total number of Gender Studies professorships, their distribution among the federal states (Germany), types of universities and disciplines, as well as regarding pay grade and duration of appointment. Furthermore, the article addresses the development of denominations. The resulting picture is multilayered: on the one hand, there are increasing numbers of Gender Studies professorships in the course of the last number of years as well as their distribution and a broad range of subjects; on the other hand, however, they continue to have little relevance (quantitatively) compared to the total number of professorships at the universities." Bulgarian women medical doctors in the social modernization of the Bulgarian nation state (1878-1944)

Nazarska, Georgeta
Quelle: Historical Social Research : the official journal of Quantum and Interquant ; an international journal for the application of formal methods to history, Vol. 33 (2008) No. 2, S. 232-246
Inhalt: "This paper presents empirical (both statistical and prosopographical) data about the professional cluster of women medical doctors in Bulgaria from the establishment of Bulgarian Nation State till the Second World War. Medical doctors in Bulgaria were a main part of national intellectual elites, formed as a professional group of the Bulgarian intelligentsia during the 1830s-1870s. The first Bulgarian woman graduated from a university in the very beginning of national independence (1878) and she was a medical doctor, Anastassia Golovina. 1) This paper deals with the education and training of Bulgarian women medical doctors. Data regarding their number, educational centers and migrations would be summoned in order to explain if the relevant social transformation was influenced by foreign experience. The paper summarizes facts concerning the professional career of Bulgarian women medical doctors: employment opportunities, career interruptions, discriminatory appointment and promotion practices, cultural stereotyping. Also their professional activity in promoting hygiene and vaccination, in school medical care and as pioneers in the fields of neurology and gynecology will be commented. Some biographical examples should be presented there. The paper dwells upon the social, political and cultural activities of women medical doctors. They were members and leaders of feminist, charity and Social-Democratic organizations, as well as gifted translators and publicists. The paper makes an attempt to compare the 'Bulgarian case' of women doctors with the experience of women doctors in the same period in the Southeastern and the Western Europe." (author's abstract)

(ICI)
Approaches to gender mainstreaming : what's the problem (represented to be)?
Autor/in:
Bacchi, Carol
(UN)

Women in higher education : issues and challenges for part-time scientists
Autor/in:
Donovan, Claire; Hodgson, Barbara; Scalon, Eileen; Whitelegg, Elizabeth
Quelle: Women's studies international forum, Vol. 28 (2005) No. 2-3, S. 247-258
Inhalt: "This whole reports on the experience of some women who work part-time as Associate Lecturers (ALs) in Science or Technology at the UK Open University (OU), a unique higher education institution. Using data from questionnaires and on-line focus group discussions, we explore aspects of these women's careers in HE science teaching. This study, the Associate Lecturers in Science (ALiS) project, was undertaken as a contribution to the UK's Athena Project, a national drive to improve the recruitment, retention and progress of women in science, engineering and technology in Higher Education. It was also part of a wider study of women's careers in science. We explore the women's response to the flexible employment patterns enabled by part-time working in this context and their view of the development opportunities they have experienced. This paper summarises some of the project's findings and demonstrates how the OU, due to its flexible employment patterns, by restoring women's confidence in their abilities and by actively developing women's careers in HE succeeds in being a major employer of women in science and technology teaching at HE level."
