Inhalt: "The restructuring of the public rector in the OECD countries, due to the introduction of New Public Management tools, has also reached the universities and academic site. These processes have far-reaching consequences for the Organisation of the university, and yet it is unclear how and to what extent the organisational changes affect the gender arrangements an which the universities were founded in the past. By looking closer at the university reforms in Austria and Germany, the article examines standards of academic excellence, academic ways of life and career systems. Focusing an disciplinary contexts and new job profiles, the article shows how gender arrangements could be changed, restructured or newly formed within the current change processes." The effect of priming gender roles on women's implicit gender beliefs and career aspirations

Inhalt: "The authors investigated the effect of priming gender roles on women's implicit gender stereotypes, implicit leadership self-concept, and interest in masculine and feminine careers. Women primed with traditional gender roles (e.g., a male surgeon and a female nurse) showed increased automatic gender stereotypes relative to controls; this effect mediated their reduced interest in masculine occupations. By contrast, exposure to nontraditional roles (e.g., a female surgeon and a male nurse) decreased women's leadership self-concept and lowered their interest in masculine occupations, suggesting that female vanguards (i.e., successful women in male-dominated careers) can provoke upward comparison threat, rather than inspire self-empowerment. Thus, priming either traditional or nontraditional gender roles can threaten progress toward gender equality, albeit through different mechanisms (stereotypes or self-concept, respectively)." Inhalt: "On the basis of two ethnographic research projects which analyzed academics' work culture in different university faculties and research institutions, this paper asks how processes of 'doing science' and 'doing gender' are interrelated. By looking at the self-perception of historians and bioscientists, it shows how shared beliefs regarding the nature of a proper academic and of good academic work combine and contribute to the exclusion of women." As balancing act and as game : how women and men science faculty experience the promotion process
Autor/in:
Gunter, Ramona; Stambach, Amy
Quelle: Gender issues, Vol. 21 (2003) No. 1, S. 24-42
Details
Inhalt: "Studies on the division of domestic labor find that women take on a greater proportion
of domestic responsibilities; this has implications for both women and men who work
in demanding jobs. In this study of women and men science faculty at a major research
university, the authors find that women tend to relate their experiences of the promotion
process to both their domestic and faculty roles, whereas men tend not to consider
than their domestic roles have any bearing on their experiences of the promotion process.
Women view the promotion process in terms of the components that make demands on their
time, and they suggest ways that the process could (and should) be changed. Men view
the process as a challenging game, and they describe the promotion process, as it
currently exists, as necessary and acceptable. The authors find that there are compelling
reasons to reconsider the structure of the promotion process and to strengthen and
expand the programmatic supports that address the needs of women." (author's abstract)|

Gender, science and scientific organisations in Germany

Inhalt: "This article considers the situation of women in science in Germany. We argue that
scientific organizations play a crucial role in shaping science careers, often with
different consequences for men and women. To sustain the argument, we offer a study
of the careers of male and female scientists in the Max Planck Society. Our findings
show that external support increases career options and opportunities for men, but
not for women scientists." (author's abstract)|

Gender differences in the rewards to publishing in academe : science in 1970's
Autor/in:

Inhalt: "This paper makes use of a unique data set fordoctoral-level biochemists, earth scientists,
physicists, and physiologists to examine the question of whether the rewards to publishing
in science are gender blind. The longitudinal nature of the data, and the inclusion
of different research outcome variables, permit the estimation of a wage-change model
that controls for fixed effects and productivity differences. We find little evidence
that the reward process in academe during the 1970s was affected by gender. We do,
however, find evidence that catch-up was occurring, implying that all was not well
in the past for the women scientists in the study. (The 1975 Survey of Doctorate Recipients
indicates that racial minority groups - Blacks, American Indians, and Asians - comprised,
respectively, 5.9%, 6.3%, 2.8%, and 6.3% of the doctoral populations in physics, chemistry,
earth science, and the biosciences.)" (author's abstract)|
