(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper examines the interplay between intensifying competition among scientific institutions, on the one hand, and career opportunities of young scientist, on the other hand, using chemistry-departments in German universities and non-academic research institutes as an example. Drawing on Bourdieu, the authors construct and analyze the filed in which institutional competition takes place. The power relations in the field are structured by the relative amount of 'pure scientific capital' and/or 'institutional capital' available. In an analysis of professorial appointments they show that the field's structure has little impact on junior scientsits' career opportunities. In contrast to the US, where pervasive institutional competition goes hand in hand with a high degree of social closure in academic careers, the authors find that career opportunities are (still) relatively open in the German case, in spite of growing competition. This openness is due to the special institutional framework that provides the German academic field with a relatively high degree of autonomy. As recent changes in science policy aim to alter the institutional framework, they also jeopardize the autonomy of the academic field." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "There is hardly any other area in the knowledge based service sector in which a similar rapid erosion regarding employee status and working condition is taking place than in the academic and non-academic research institutions. In Austria, this development can be traced back to lack of financial resources provided by the state, personnel strategies at universities and declining collective/ trade union countervailing powers. Increasing de-professionalization and decreasing market-power lead to a rise in the propensity to act collectively. Our empirical findings demonstrate that field specific differences also affect upon trade unions' potential for strategic action: at universities (professional bureaucracies), appropriate strategies would aim at setting minimum standards in pay and (permanent) employment for all employees. This, however, cannot be enforced due to a lack of solidarity between the status groups. Market-oriented knowledge production in non-university research would need collective strategies aiming at market closure, therefore establishing a profession with certain entry barriers which cannot be realized at the moment due to heterogeneity in research fields and a lack of collective power."

Inhalt: "Although women have made substantial progress in educational achievement, they still have poorer chances than men to attain positions in high status fields. The problem of the slow pace of the integration of women into these fields needs to be addressed with the focus on the organizational context. Using the empirical example of a German research organization that mainly works in the natural and technical sciences, the authors look at organizational determinants of the employment of women. What roles do organizational strategies, policies, and environmental conditions play? The analysis is based on panel data from ten research institutes over the period running from 1984 to 1997. The total percentage of women employed increased slightly; however there was a remarkable variation in the integration of women between the institutes. The analyses demonstrate that the implementation of temporary employment contracts goes hand in hand with a higher representation of women. Women find access to male-dominated research institutes if general conditions of employment become worse or statistical discrimination is no longer justified because of non-tenured employment practices." Inhalt: "This article considers the situation of women in science in Germany. We argue that
scientific organizations play a crucial role in shaping science careers, often with
different consequences for men and women. To sustain the argument, we offer a study
of the careers of male and female scientists in the Max Planck Society. Our findings
show that external support increases career options and opportunities for men, but
not for women scientists." (author's abstract)|
