Inhalt: "It has almost become a commonplace that increasing temporal, physical and psychological work demands and pressures have challenged capabilities for maintaining strong intimate relationships and families. In this article the authors compare how work-to-family conflicts, serious conflicts within partnerships, and the risk of separation are influenced by antecedents located in two dominant research traditions: an the one hand individual work strains, and an the other research an balancing work and family, taking account of different patterns of employment and housework within partnerships. For their analyses the authors draw on two different data sets: the German Socio-Economic Panel Study (SOEP) and the study entitled 'Employment relationships a social exchange'. The results reveal the different negative influences of high work strains on both the quality and the stability of partnerships." (author's abstract)

Titelübersetzung:Fathers who claim parental allowance : on the relevance of social and economic characteristics of couples

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The reform of parental leave and parental allowance which was introduced in Germany in 2007 aimed, among other things, at increasing fathers' take up of parental leave. This article investigates fathers' take up of parental allowance in the context of the couple's social characteristics and economic resources. Based on survey data (Young Families 2008, Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung) the determinants of fathers taking parental leave will be analyzed. The second research question focuses on the driving forces behind men's decisions to take more time off than the 'daddy quota'. Here the analysis is based on register data for two federal states in northern Germany. Empirical results confirm that economic considerations within the couple are of major importance for men's decisions to claim the parental allowance and for how long." (author's abstract)

Väterzeit : das Elterngeld als Beschleuniger von Gleichstellung?
Titelübersetzung:Time with fathers : the parental leave benefit as promoter of gender equity?
Autor/in:
Trappe, Heike
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This contribution centres on men who claim parental leave benefits in the federal states of Bavaria, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein. The analyses are based on register data collected by local authorities for children born between 2007 and 2009. First, it is asked about the determinants underlying the take-up of fathers' parental leave benefits. Then, couples with different durations of fathers' parental leave are investigated more closely. Fathers' decision to take any parental leave follows essentially economic considerations within the couple. Female partners' employment and their relative earnings have a positive impact. Couples where fathers' parental leave exceeds the "daddy quota" represent quite a select group that has become smaller over time. Living in a non-marital union or in a large city, having more children as well as female partners' particular situation (e.g., self-employment, in education) facilitate a longer parental leave of fathers."
Titelübersetzung:Equality in the job - and on the diaper-changing table : child care by both parents is vital to female scientists
Autor/in:
Althaber, Agnieszka; Hess, Johanna; Pfahl, Lisa
Quelle: WZB-Mitteilungen, (2011) H. 133, S. 34-38
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Highly qualified women often face career disadvantages after the birth of their children. For women in academia, the balance between professional and family duties cannot be taken for granted either. In addition to other factors, the private sphere does play an important role in women's career prospects. Many female academics expect their partners to help with the children. However, women still maintain primary responsibility for children and as a result their academic careers often suffer." (author's abstract)
Titelübersetzung:Fertility decisions and partnership context effects of educational constellations on family formation based on German Mikrozensus data from 1996-2004
Autor/in:
Bauer, Gerrit; Jacob, Marita
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "A review of existing sociological literature on fertility decisions reveals that most empirical studies focus on characteristics of the female spouse as explanatory factors, while the role of the partner is neglected for the most part. However, most children are fathered and born into an existing relationship and the influence of the partner has to be regarded as an important determining factor for childbirth. The authors propose starting from a bargaining perspective and model family-formation as a collective decision mutually agreed upon by both spouses, especially scrutinizing on the interrelation of both partners' educational level. In this paper, they examine in how far certain educational constellations have an impact on family formation. Classical theories of family economics suggest that educational asymmetries between partners may encourage parenthood. Our analysis is based on German Mikrozensus data collected between 1996 and 2004. The large sample allows them to analyze in detail the effects of educational levels as well as uncommon educational constellations. In a first step, the authors investigate separate effects of general and vocational education of each partner, followed by a quasi-cohort design, with women born in the mid 1960th and mid 1970th, to study the timing of the first birth. They conclude that traditional hypergamy may foster parenthood. But also educational homogamy leads to a higher amount of parents as compared to hypogamous couples, in which the wife's educational qualification exceeds the husband's educational degree."
Titelübersetzung:The path from partnerlessness to childlessness : the change in partnership biographies and links to birth trends
Autor/in:
Eckhard, Jan
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In light of the increasing divorce rates and the growing number of persons of adult age living alone, the question arises as to the degree to which the falling birth-rates in Germany are also caused by the fact that partnerships on which parenthood could be built are becoming increasingly rare. To this end, the study takes as a basis the DJI family survey (3rd wave) to investigate first of all the partnership biographies of various Western German women's birth cohorts. A trend has been identified which leads away from ongoing relationships between couples, towards a sequence of shorter relationships. The question is subsequently pursued as to whether the differences in the birth cohorts' birth-rates are caused by these biographical changes regarding partnerships. It is shown here that the impact of the birth year on the number of children that women have had by the age of 30 approximates if one verifies for various characteristics related to partnership biographies. In particular the increasing partnerlessness at the peak of adulthood and the fact that relationships between couples are becoming shorter by virtue of the increased likelihood of separation must accordingly be regarded as contextual conditions which help to explain the falling numbers of births."
Titelübersetzung:The "neglected" gender in family research : studies on partnership and parenthood in men
Autor/in:
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "To begin with, this chapter addresses the question of why men have been a largely neglected topic in family research so far. Subsequently, it is argued that only a joint consideration of the perspectives of women and men provides an adequate picture of union formation and fertility behaviour. The studies collected in this volume show a number of partly unexpected similarities between the sexes, e.g. regarding the role of age norms in family transitions or concerning the compatibility of career aspirations and parenthood. The relevance of these issues for men's behaviour has usually been underestimated. Taken together with the well-known problems of women, they suggest rather poor prospects for the future of the family in Germany. Beyond the individual responsibility of men and women, it is a societal task and challenge to improve general conditions for families." (author's abstract)

Sharing of home responsibilities between professionally employed woman and their husbands
Autor/in:
Biernat, Monica; Wortman, Camille B.
Quelle: Journal of personality and social psychology, Vol. 60 (1991) No. 6, S. 844-860
Inhalt: "A sample of 139 married couples with young children and with relatively equal status
careers (wives were university professors or businesswomen) were interviewed about
work and home life. Considerable, traditional inequity in the distribution of child-care
tasks and chore responsibility was noted, but women were generally satisfied with
their husbands' home involvement. In the academic sample, the longer hours each spouse
worked, the more child care the other performed; in the business sample, child-care
involvement was largely determined by the husband's work hours, income, and education.
Overall, women were more self-critical than were men about their performance in home
roles, and women's role performance was rated more highly by husbands than by themselves.
Women professionals' continued use of traditional sex role standards and the importance
of attending to both partners' perspectives in studies of married life are discussed."
