(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This paper compares the political measures taken towards institutionalisation of the societal position of women in the USA, West and East Germany. While the assertion and cementation of the traditional division of labour into male wage earners and female householders was central in the former (West) Federal Republic of Germany, the employment of women was promoted and demanded in the GDR. Due to the liberal political tradition in the USA, a specific gender politics was established relatively late, which then concentrated on measures for gender equality. Further, an empirical review is taken of how the different political expediencies correspond to the consciousness of die populations. Using the ISSP 1994, which had die transformation of gender roles as its topic, the attitudes of men and women towards the employment of women and mothers are examined in the three regions. In concurrence with the theoretical formulations it is shown that in West Germany distinctly more traditional conceptions of die role of women persist than in the USA or East Germany. The employment of women is most clearly advocated in East Germany, while in the USA liberal views also towards the tensions between family and career can be discerned." (author's abstract)

The temporal dimension of gender inequality in academia
Titelübersetzung:Die zeitliche Dimension der Frauenbenachteiligung in akademischen Berufen
Autor/in:
Toren, Nina
Quelle: Higher education : the international journal of higher education and educational planning, Vol. 25 (1993) No. 4, S. 439-455
(IAB)
Inhalt: "This paper examines gender inequality in academic careers by applying Merton's concept of 'socially expected durations' (SEDs). Women's relatively slower advancement along the academic hierarchy has been traditionally attributed to their traits and constraints. The concept of SED shifts attention from the individual to the organizational level, and the actual and expected augmented durations between promotions for women are viewed as part of the structural arrangements of academic institutions and their culture. It is argued that because of the distinct characteristics of academic careers, time-in-rank is an important dimension distinguishing among otherwise very uniform occupational roles and career patterns. The implications of conceptualizing career discrepancies in terms of socially expected durations are discussed." (author's abstract, IAB-Doku)

Work-family conflict : a comparison of dual-career and traditional-career men
Autor/in:
Higgins, Christopher A.; Duxbury, Linda E.
Quelle: Journal of occupational behaviour, Vol. 13 (1992) No. 4, S. 389-411
(IAB)
Inhalt: "This research examines differences in the antecedents and consequences of work-family conflict - a form of interrole conflict that occurs when the demands of work and family are mutually incompatible in some respect - for two groups of career-oriented men: those with a homemaker wife (called traditional-career men) and those with a spouse in a career-oriented job (labelled dual-career men). Using a model built on the work of Kopelman, Greenhaus and Connolly (1983), the responses from 136 dual-career man and 137 traditional-career men were compared. The primary conclusion of this reserach is that maternal career employment has a significant effect on the antecedents of work-familiy conflict. Dual-career man appear to experience a significant negative spillover from their work domain. We suggest that this spillover is due to a lack of structural flexibility in the workplace, outdated organizational policies that operate on the 'myth of separate worlds' and a lack of social support for the male dual-career role which contradicts societal norms." The origins of sex differences in science
Autor/in:
Long, J. Scott
Quelle: Social forces : an international journal of social research associated with the Southern Sociological Society, Vol. 68 (1990) No. 4, S. 1297-1315
Inhalt: "The sociology of science has clearly established the presence of sex differences in scientific productivity and position. This article examines the processes leading to the lower productivity of female scientists at the completion of their doctoral training. Collaboration with the mentor is found to be the most important factor affecting productivity. For females, opportunities for collaboration are significantly decreased by having young children. As a consequence, the presence of young children has an adverse, indirect effect on the productivity of female scientists during graduate study. This effect does not exist for males. In addition to differences in the process of collaboration, many small differences that disadvantage women and advantage men are found in the levels of resources affecting productivity and in the mechanisms by which resources are translated into productivity. The concentration of small disadvantages provides a further explanation of sex differences in productivity at the start of the career. Since early advantages and disadvantages have been found to accumulate, this article provides an essential first step in understanding sex differences in scientific productivity and position that emerge during the career." Are women and blacks closing the gap? : salary discrimination in American science during the 1970s and 1980s
Autor/in:
Haberfeld, Yitchak; Shenhav, Yehouda
Quelle: Industrial and labor relations review, Vol. 44 (1990) No. 1, S. 68-82
Inhalt: "The authors use two longitudinal surveys of American scientists conducted by the
Census Bureau, one for the years 1972-76 and one for the years 1982-86, to estimate
salary discrimination against black scientists and female scientists. In counterpoint
to the results of some other studies, which have suggested that race- and gender-based
salary discrimination has been either declining or stable in many occupations, this
analysis provides evidence that salary discrimination against black scientists and
female scientists worsened between the 1970s and the 1980s. Female scientists earned
about 12% less than similarly qualified male scientists in 1972, but 14% less in 1982;
and black scientists earned about the same amount as white scientists in 1972, but
6% less in 1982." (author's abstract)|
