A Genderless Protest: Women Confronting Romanian Communism

Inhalt: Far from accomplishing its utopian plans of transforming society, communism did not turn gender equality into a reality either. This paper moves beyond the common-place approaches that simply underline the failures of this political system and presumes that women experienced communism in very diverse and often ambiguous ways, for public and private roles conflicted more often than not. From among the few individuals who dared to articulate critical thoughts on Romanian communism prior to its collapse of 1989, the present paper recuperates the experience of three women. Members of the urban educated elite, they believed nonetheless in different values and pursued different strategies of expressing discontent with the regime. These female critics of the communist system went beyond personal or group interests, but among the issues of public concern they raised none belonged to a feminist agenda. Yet, these women acted as if gender equality was a reality in Ceauşescu’s Romania: they considered themselves the equal partners of like-minded men, while their male peers accepted them as such, for equalitarian perceptions of genders shaped the public roles assumed by non-conformist Romanian intellectuals. The example of these three women does not prove that communism succeeded in redefining the status of women, but it illustrates how the urban educated social group experienced gender relations then. No feminists in thinking, these three women were so in their behavior. Their criticism of Ceauşescu’s communism was genderless, but it nonetheless strengthened the idea that women are no less than men.

Titelübersetzung:Stigmatisation as a biographical challenge of professional practice in gender equality work
Autor/in:
Kassebaum, Silke
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Gender equality offices have generally been successfully implemented in public institutions. Office-holders no longer have to belong to a socio-political movement or they distance themselves explicitly from the women's rights movement. A process of institutionalisation and (or so it seems) of demarcation of the original female emancipation and women's rights movement has taken place. Nevertheless, women's issues and equal opportunity commissioners are stuck with the stigma of feminism. Against this background, this article analyses the interplay between biographical vulnerability and the professional activity of equal opportunity commissioners. Stigmatisation processes in gender equality work are located on the interpretative level of spaces of interaction and are looked at from a feminist perspective. The article concludes that reflective stigma management is required as a biographically-dimensioned professionalisation project of equal opportunity commissioners." (Autorenreferat)
Gender und Sozialpolitik : ein Transformationsansatz
Titelübersetzung:Gender and social policy: a transformative approach
Autor/in:
Leibetseder, Bettina
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Before the third feminist wave, gender theories demanded either an adoption of 'male' lifestyles or enhance the status of 'female' lifestyles in society to overcome gender inequality. Present, 'Gender Rebellion Feminisms', however, debate the binary thinking of gender and challenge the gendered order on this issue. This shift has hardly influenced the debate in social policy, which is still bound to the 'sameness' or 'difference' theory. This article proposes a transformative approach that conceives equality as a complex concept beyond sameness and difference and calls for a degendering of social policy. By doing so, it is argued, the binary division of gender can be abandoned and feminist critique on social policy can reconnect with contemporary discourses in gender theories. This paradigmatic re-orientation overcomes the binary view on sameness and difference, re-addresses gendered social policy and entails a degendered distribution of care work and gainful employment." Der Kampf um Hegemonie: Potentiale radikaler Demokratie aus feministisch-theoretischer Perspektive
Autor/in:
Wilde, Gabriele

Was bleibt?
Titelübersetzung:Chances and limits of a queer-feminist online-archive
Autor/in:
Koch, Ulrike; Zschokke, Anna
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "Every day new blog posts, tweets, images, and videos appear, which take on social issues, discuss them from a (queer-)feminist viewpoint and initiate debates within (queer-)feminism. The resulting digital knowledge makes the lively discussions within the (queer-)feminist scene visible and cannot be separated from that scene anymore. However, most (queer-)feminist digital content is currently not recorded for posterity and thus at risk of disappearance and oblivion. Therefore the question of a (queer-)feminist meta-archive is posed by the authors, more precisely an archive which records digital content and makes it accessible to persons interested. This article presents a semi-utopian concept of how to organize and establish a meta-archive that could serve varying needs." (author's abstract)
Idle no more: indigene Aktivistinnen und Feminismen
Titelübersetzung:Idle no more: indigenous activism and feminisms
Autor/in:
John, Sonja
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "The grassroots movement "Idle No More", founded and carried by indigenous women, does neither identify itself as a women's nor as an indigenous organization. Based on grassroots democracy and intersectional alliances, it succeeded in generating broad support for its main concerns - protection of the environment and of treaty relationships - and to address the structural problems of colonial und sexist practices. The author argues that the success of the organization lies in the context analysis that explains without accusing. This allows for broad and solidary alliances." (author's abstract)
Margaret Atwood in the second and third waves of feminism on the basis of Julia Kristeva's theories
Autor/in:
Barfi, Zahra; Alaei, Sarieh
Quelle: International Letters of Social and Humanistic Sciences, (2014) 40, S 13-21
Inhalt: Although Margaret Atwood started writing in the second phase of feminism, some of her works show the features of the second and the third wave of feminism. It's clear in Atwood’s Cat’s Eye. Elaine, protagonist of the novel, and other female characters indicate these features. Some of Atwood’s works imply Kristeva's theories. Unlike the second wave of feminism, Julia Kristeva as a postmodern feminist rejects the distinction between sex and gender believing that these two terms respectively represent biology and culture which cannot be separated from each other. This idea can be examined in Margaret Atwood's novel, Cat's Eye, as a feature of the third wave of feminism. The authors of this article seek to analyze Atwood's famous novel, Cat's Eye, in the second and third waves of feminism based on Julia Kristeva's theories.
