Inhalt: In this article, we explore the collective identity of feminist activists as expressed on Twitter in the context of "Day Without A Woman". We conceptualize collective feminist identity by drawing upon literature on identity, feminism, and social movements. We expected to find a politically-defined group boundary around supporters of "Day Without A Woman". Using the online tool Netlytic, we collected tweets posted from accounts in Washington D.C., New York City, and Los Angeles. In a preliminary step, we performed a word count analysis and coded frequent words within the collected tweets into categories of meaning. Based on these categories, we drew a sub-sample of tweets, which we scrutinized in-depth using discourse analysis. Through this qualitative analysis, we show that the group boundary of the supporters of "Day Without A Woman" is defined by the common denominator of their negative relation to Donald TRUMP. While the supporters stress the relevance of feminist claims, barriers to identifying as a feminist seem to persist, as reflected in those whom we call "flexi-feminists". The boundary between supporters and non-supporters of "Day Without A Woman" hence seems to broaden from a line to a space which can be occupied without complete group entry. In this space and beyond, supporters express feminist identity through an "us" versus "him" logic.

Doing the feminist intergenerational mic: methodological reflections on digital storytelling as process and praxis

Inhalt: In this article, we reflect on the methodology of a digital storytelling workshop held in May 2016, gathering activists and academics across four generations to share and record their activist histories. Drawing on observational notes and participant feedback, we investigate whether and how the workshop challenged knowledge-production conventions, ageist assumptions, and intergenerational scripts. We offer the concept of a feminist intergenerational mic, arguing that the norm-challenging possibilities of this methodology lay not in providing access to a mic, but rather in particular, routinized, feminist and intergenerational practices. Through this article, we contribute to conversations about feminist methodologies, power and vulnerability in research, participatory media creation, and aging studies.

Titelübersetzung:Between "playing doctor", "work-life-balance", and "highend-medicine": do young doctors challenge "hegemonic masculinity" in the field of medicine?
Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 17 (2016) 1, 30 S
Inhalt: In this contribution we discuss the question of whether the so-called "feminization" of medicine challenges persisting power structures in the field. The notion of the "feminization of medicine" implies both the "masculinity" of the field and its change due to the increasing number of female medical doctors. We present the comparative analysis of two group discussions from the longitudinal study "Career Paths and Career Breaks of Medical Doctors During Residency" (KarMed). One discussion was held with women, one discussion with men, all of whom had just completed their medical studies. In both discussions the theme of gender came up manifestly in the discursive context of the so-called "feminization of medicine". The discussants contrasted this "feminization" with the mythologically laden "masculinity" of surgery. The material of our group discussions indicates a persistent masculine norm in the perception of both female and male doctors. Despite all differences between their members, the group of men constituted itself as a group of medical doctors representing the masculine norm. The group of women constituted itself through shared identifications as "women in medicine". We analyzed the material with psychoanalytic methods in social research and we discuss our interpretations in relation to the notions of "feminization" and of "hegemonic masculinity". Becomings: narrative entanglements and microsociology

In the Fold Between Life and Art, a Genealogy of Women Artists' interviewt worden. (Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "In this article, I look back in an art/ research experiment of convening an exhibition of women artists and inviting them to a round-table discussion in the context of a sociological conference. The artists who took part in this event had been previously interviewed for a feminist research project, entitled 'In the Fold Between Life and Art, a Genealogy of Women Artists'. The conference exhibition gave the artists the opportunity to appear to an academic audience and present their work while the round-table discussion created a forum for a narrative event where all women were invited to recount stories of becoming an artist. In looking at this event I want to explore questions around the possibilities and limitations of narratives in microsociological inquiries. In following trails of Arendt's theorisation of stories, I explore connections and tensions between social, political and cultural entanglements in narrative research." (author's abstract)
Gender, reflexivity, and positionality in male research in one's own community with filipino seafarers' wives

(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: This article reflects on the epistemological, methodological, and ethical issues related to undertaking a cross-gender research (male researcher with female participants) in one's own community. It also examines issues of analysis and representation germane to taking a gendered perspective in this study of the lives and experiences of left-behind women. The article frames the discussion of these issues within four interrelated sites or levels of reflexivity: theoretical reflexivity, gender and fieldwork relations, positionality and the insider/outsider dynamic, and representation. The conclusion reflects on the ethical obligation a researcher conducting a study in one's own community bears and the consequences of this ethical burden on representation. (author's abstract)
Negotiating tensions in researching, facilitating, and critiquing gender: exploring institutional and feminist influences

Lane, Laura; Taber, Nancy; Woloshyn, Vera
Quelle: Forum Qualitative Sozialforschung / Forum: Qualitative Social Research, 13 (2012) 3, 17 S
(Autorenreferat)
Inhalt: "This article explores the authors' experiences with negotiating tensions when conducting research. As three female researchers in various stages of their academic careers, they describe their own reflexive accounts of the research process as they negotiated their roles and responsibilities in relation to academic institutions and feminism. They discuss the literature related to responsibilities of academics, the tensions associated with conducting research, and the feminist methodologies addressing gendered issues in the current study. The authors contextualize the research project by outlining their positionalities and the methodology for their reflexive process. They then discuss their experiences of negotiating ourselves within an academic institution and within feminism. They conclude by discussing the importance of creating a feminist space through collaboration within academic institutions." (author's abstract)
