Inhalt: Following trade agreements between ASEAN states, the expansion of cross-border roads and bridges between Laos and Thailand has linked local communities and distant markets in increasingly diverse ways. Although the planned impacts of such integration are expected to be beneficial, effects on the ground vary, as witnessed at a sleepy outpost in Xayabury and a more vibrant crossing in Savannakhet. This paper discusses first the physical setting of such border facilities, and then explores their actual local effects on traders’ activities, highlighting changes in gender roles and perceptions of entrepreneurial competition participated in by women in the two research sites.

Inhalt: "The paper is part of a larger investigation which analyses the potentials of open access publishing in order to increase the publication and therefore career opportunities for female
social scientists. It compares three thematically and methodologically similar social sciences journals: the open-access journal 'Forum Qualitative Social Research' (FQS) and the two Closed-Access-/ Hybrid journals 'Zeitschrift für qualitative Forschung' (ZQF) and 'Sozialer Sinn' (SoSi). The data was collected on the percentage of female editorial and advisory board members of these three journals (N=184 total). An extensive reconstruction and analysis was carried out to mark the gender structure of the authorship of the three journals 2000-2008 published articles (N=1557 total)." (author's abstract)

'Looking like my favourite Barbie' - Online Gender Construction of Tween Girls in Estonia and in Sweden
Autor/in:
Siibak, Andra; Hernwall, Patrik
Quelle: Studies of Transition States and Societies, 3 (2011) 2, S 57-68
Inhalt: "The aim of this article is to analyse how tween girls in Estonia and in Sweden describe and discover their
gender identities when selecting profi le images for social networking sites (SNSs). To this end, interviews
with tweens in Estonia (N=21) and in Sweden (N=31) were carried out. As SNSs largely exist without the
recognisable surveillance of adults, children can explore the social matrix of relating to others, and they
also feel safe to try out and display diff erent constructions and reconstructions of their identity. At the
same time, in communicating online, impression management is formulated with constant worry about
how to construct one’s virtual identity so that it will be appreciated and accepted by one’s peer group. In
this article, our analysis focuses on the most popular posing strategies used by tween girls, which, it turns
out, are often marked by reproduction of the dominant heterosexual cultural norms and values." (author's abstract)
Reporting Romania's 2009 European elections: press coverage and viability of the male and female candidates
Autor/in:
Iorgoveanu, Aurora
Quelle: Eurolimes, (2011) Supl. 3, S 249-262
Inhalt: This article aims to analyze and compare the press coverage of the two most visible male and female candidates for a Member of the European Parliament office during the campaign for the European elections held in Romania, June 2009. The present study examines a month of coverage in the four most influential broadsheets and tabloids in Romania: Cancan, EvenimentulZilei, Gândul and Libertatea. Using a design of content analysis, the results of this paper emphasize that Elena Băsescu received less coverage than did George Becali. There were also found qualitative differences in coverage, attributed to Elena Băsescu’s gender, who was depicted as not being viable to represent the Romanians interests in Brussels.

Gendered Negotiations: Engagements with 'Modernity' and Identity Change amongst Chiapeneco Youth in Mexico
Autor/in:
Ruse, Jamie-Leigh
Quelle: Studies of Transition States and Societies, 3 (2011) 2, S 26-41
Inhalt: "In this paper I wish to examine how changes have occurred in the processes of gendered identity construction amongst Mexican youths through examining local experiences of global, and specifically Mexican, modernities. Based on f eldwork carried out amongst youths in the city of San Cristobal de las Casas, in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, my analysis addresses how youths plan for the future in the context of economic and political marginalisation, and how this affects the way in which they pursue different forms of romantic relationships. I also address changes that have occurred in youths’ understandings, perceptions and performances of their gendered identities in the context of a highly developed local tourist industry, the advent of mass media, and new online social worlds. My study shows how gendered identity construction amongst youths here becomes context-dependent, and how it encompasses individual agency whilst at the same time being negotiated through wider structural and social limitations. I also wish to demonstrate how changing gendered identities amongst youths are constantly constructed and renegotiated by individuals seeking to accommodate notions of modernity with perceptions of the traditional, and how these individuals balance contesting notions of gendered identities within themselves. This is, therefore, a study of local and gendered identity change amongst youths in the context of localised modernities and rapid social change." (author's abstract)

Inhalt: "The first annual meeting of the Gender Studies Association, which was founded in Berlin in 2010, took place on the 21st-22nd of January 2011 at the LMU in Munich. The inter- and transdisciplinary conference was centred around the topic of 'Vulnerabilities' and presented different themes and perspectives from gender studies scholars on the topic. The different contributions were organized in four sessions with emphasis on 'complications', 'body', 'precarization' and 'conflicts'. In the wide range of contributions vulnerability was connected amongst others with epistemology, literature, body politics and mutilations, preciousness and precarity and conflict."
